Danger Watch Vol. 3 – Maddy’s Tap Room

A reader’s Danger Watch nomination says:

“Maddy’s Tap Room was supposed to open on 13th and L street NW. The liquor license was posted and even a schematic of the floorplan was placed in a window. To date, no progress has taken place on the location. PoP previously reported about this location in 2011.”

Maddy’s Tap Room is actually a triple nomination from readers. I’m happy to say that I’m hearing good news on this front. I heard the delays were due to permitting issues but they have now been approved and construction is set to begin in March with an opening hopefully at beginning of summer.

If you have a bar/restaurant you’d like to nominate for a Danger Watch please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail

  • This is a great idea for recurring posts. It’s always frustrating when businesses are supposed to be opening and don’t (I’m looking at you Wagamama). Good job, PoP.

  • I completely disagree. These posts cast a negative light on these businesses that, more often than not, are only being delayed by red tape from DCRA/ABRA/DOH/HPRB/ANC.

It takes a long time to get a place open in DC. If you don’t like it, talk to your council member.

    • or it can help shed the light on a place and get people behind it.
why would you immediately call your council person if a place hasn’t opened up yet? you’d need to know why first.

      • My point is that these posts could achieve the goal of finding out what is going on with these places without presuming that there is something nefarious going on. The choice of the word “Danger Watch” in the title of these posts casts a presumption that fault for the delay lies with the business.

If PoP chose a more neutral title for these posts, then these posts wouldn’t bother me.

If I owned one of these places I’d be upset that some blogger was putting my business on a “Danger Watch,” which sounds quite negative, without knowing what was really going on with my business.

  • Ah, old Stoney’s.
Has this spot been vacant since the building went up?

  • I love the idea, but the name has to change. It associates these places with negativity before they even open.

As for this place, my bet would be that they are waiting until the new NYU dorms next door open in the fall.

    • Prince Of Petworth

I’m happy to take recommendations for alternative names. Just leave them in them in the comments here.

      • Here are some ideas:

        “Status Check”
        “What’s shakin’ in the makin’?”
        “Eye on the corner”
        “Coming soon”
        “Project update”
        “Status update”
        “Development developments”
        “Project evolution”

  • How is it that nice restaurants and retail always seem to have these permitting problems, whereas glass-plate trashy/shady businesses are able to get up and running in no time?

    • If you want to do everything right and by the book it takes a long long time in DC.

That isn’t to say that places that don’t look nice haven’t done this…I’m sure many have. It’s easier to get less ambitious things done too.
