Thanks to a reader for sending this in from Calvert St, NW in Adams Morgan. I can’t find it in the archives but we once discussed a similar display found on Adams Mill Road. At that time I believe some folks were concerned that the way it was attached to the tree could damage the tree. Art or Graffiti?

poor tree
It is damaging because it is nailed in. The tree will try to grow around it if it isn’t removed.
Yep, and while I can’t dispute the fact that nailing something to a tree tends to damage it a bit, I figure if this tree can survive at this particular location, a nail or two isn’t gonna kill it!
Also a good point!
Neither. It’s tree abuse and crap. Whoever put it there should have a picture of a tree nailed into their heads.
+1
It’s illegal to nail anything to trees in the district. The artist should be appropriately punished to the extent the law requires.
If only the city would follow its own tree laws. I have had to remove at least a hundred girdling zip ties and heavy tape from trees in Columbia Heights from Emergency parking signs that were just ripped off after the end date.
