    Rant: Small children.

    Rave: King Cake season!

Rant: No king cake in this god-forsaken place.

  • I currently live in Dupont…thinking about moving to a place in NoMa. Don’t know much about the area. How is it? Good local feel? How is crime? Anything else I should know?

Rant: I’ve lived here a few months and finding it really hard to make new friends and meet people. Feeling especially lonely this week in DC after spending the holidays back home surrounded by friends and family.

Rave: Asked a coworker if she wanted to go out for happy hour drinks today, so that’s a start.

    • I’ve been here over 2 years and my partner and I still don’t have any kind of social network here. We have tried somewhat to get involved in our community but so far we haven’t really made any friends. And I totally understand about family – my heart breaks when I have to get back on a plane after the holidays.

      • Man, I hear you. I am lucky, but my entire social group consists of old Peace Corps friends who are transplants to DC. I can certainly see how it would be really difficult to start from scratch.

    • Prince Of Petworth

I’m gonna set up a PoP happy hour for Feb. soon!

    • I lived here for a few years before I really found a core group of friends. And where did I meet them? Church.

      • If you don’t mind me asking, where do you go to church? We joined a church and we like the services but the vast majority of members are 65+.

      • talula

Oh good news about the PoP happy hour! I remember reading about one that happened in Mt. Pleasant a few months ago when I was just moving here, sounds like a great idea!

Yeah I’m realizing I need to become more proactive in meeting people like volunteering somewhere, book clubs, pottery class, yoga class, etc. I can’t be sitting around my studio apartment waiting for people to invite me out!

      • I’ve found a lot of community through church as well. All Souls Episcopal in Woodley Park.

    • I’ve been here about 4 years and I still don’t have a strong social circle. I have found it extremely difficult to meet people and make connections here.

    • I love DC but yes, it’s not an easy place to meet people. What’s stopping us from setting up a pre-PoP HH???! Anyone? *awkward silence because HorseShoe is typing this at 9pm on a Friday night… 🙂

  • Rave: working a short day from home

Rant: I can’t stand my work… it is completely boring, unchallenging, and fulfilling… but I don’t know what work I would like

Rave: the cold weather is on it’s way out!

Rant: Job apparently depends on me passing a certification exam on Tuesday. And I am so not ready to take it.

Rave: New Ab Fab episode on this weekend, sweetie dahling!

  • If anyone left their phone on the D6, I just turned it in to the bus driver. For future reference, if I find a phone that is locked (I.e. it’s not like I can just look and see the last person they called, is there anything else I could have done?

    • i’ve found phones twice and have had success just waiting for someone to call it.

      • good idea – it hadn’t occurred to me to hang onto it. unfortunately after handing it over it did occur to me that the bus driver probably couldn’t turn it in anywhere until after his shift was over – I could have turned it in at Metro Center myself much faster.

  • rave: planning a trip out west to a friend’s wedding in cody wyoming!
    rant: planning a trip!

went to trivia night at comet ping pong on monday. it was a super young crowd. any suggestions for bars with trivia nights?

  • Rant: Re-adjusting to early mornings after restful vacation sleep.

Rave: No more Harry Thomas Jr. on the City Council

  • Rave: Going to meet my potential adopted dog tomorrow! I couldn’t be more excited.

Rant: Another family is also interested/meeting him and I would be pretty upset if we didn’t get him. After talking to his foster mom he sounds absolutely perfect for us.

Rave: Foster mom was awesome and mentioned she would prefer to see him come home with us 🙂

  • Nervous: Taking an exam tomorrow for a professional certification.

Rant: Have to wait 8 weeks for results. It is a scantron, give me a break!

Rave: Amazing boyfriend taking care of the dog in the morning and driving me there so I don’t stress!

  • Rave: Sara Bariellis’ CDs. She gets me through the day.
Rant: All these sick people at work. I dont wanna get sick!
Rave: Garlic Naan from Trader Joes numnumnum
Rant: Gotta do laundry when I get home. 🙁

    • i may be in the minority, but i *love* doing laundry. it’s the one chore that i actually look forward to.

dusting is a whole other story. hate it.

      • laundry is great when/if you have your own washer and dryer. Shared laundry rooms and laundromats make it hell.

  • paycheck almost $50 less today than it was in December due to some unforseen taxes. what the heck? I thought they passed the payroll tax?

    • idk about you, but my paycheck today was for the pay period ending 12/31/2011. My net pay actually went up because it had to balance out the end of year FSA contributions to total the entire years contribution that I elected. Some of my taxes went up, but all in all I made $20 more this pay period than the previous one. I would check some of the various allotments you might have??

    • tonyr

If you’re somewhat highly compensated you might have hit the limit on Social Security contributions towards the end of the year. New Year everything zeros out and you go back to contributing the full amount.

      • tonyr

Alternatively, and this happened to me, the payroll tax agreement was settled too late to be reflected in the first paycheck of ’12. It’ll be made up in subsequent pay periods.

  • This is a touching piece: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/a-family-learns-the-true-meaning-of-the-vow-in-sickness-and-in-health/2011/11/04/gIQAahyAdP_story.html

Rant: it made me cry at my desk, reminding me of my wife’s traumatic brain injury last summer
Rave: my wife is doing amazingly well, and is basically fully healed from the accident. we mostly just have our haircuts as a reminder (I cut my hair because she had to cut hers after having half of it shaved off before surgery).

  • Rant: So pissed about the sexual assault at 5th and Webster. Wonder if it was a thug visiting from out of town (southern accent), a local crew little G(RCC? Hilltopp?), or just someone using Petworth as his proving grounds.

Rave: Thomas is gone. Amazing, elected officials in DC involved with a felony.

  • Raves: Adios, HTJ, you asshat. My dog continues to be the best. The sinus-induced migraine I’ve had for a week is starting to go away.

Rant: I can’t seem to clear out my sinuses. This is a new issue for me, and I’m at a loss. It’s so unpleasant. 🙁

    • I heard neti pot works though I have never used one.

      Seems like it is recommended:

And if you google them they are sold all over the place. My sinuses are bothering me too and I think I am going to try this neti pot thing too.

      • I used a neti pot for a while, and my sinuses ended up feeling way worse and I got sick after using it. If you’re going to use it, make sure to use distilled water, because a few people have had problems with using tap water and having serious infections (there was an NPR story on it). I know it’s probably a 1 in a million chance that you’ll get this same infection, but better to be safe than sorry. Plus I wouldn’t want to put DC (or any city) tap water in any part of my body.

      • i used to have bad sinus problems. neti pot took care of it. and yeah, definitely don’t use tap water.

  • Rant: My comment that keeps getting deleted from the Barrel House post. PoP. Do you have filters that delete posts automatically?

    • orderedchaos

Did your post include a hyperlink/URL? If so those must be manually approved (to prevent spammers) and can take some time — in which case your comment may just be in queue.

      • Nope. But it included the word bunghole. Let me try to see if it posts here. After this I promise to concede that bunghole has not non-beavis and butthead application in the modern world.

  • Rant: After having a weird stomach thing most of the week I now think I’m getting a cold. Probably from sleeping with the window open because our furnace only has two settings: off and boiling. (that’s a whole rant in itself!)

Rave: Plans to just hang out at my place with friends tonight!

Rant: Housemate’s rent check bounced, putting me $325 in the hole plus $12 fee. (did I post this yesterday?)

Rave: Actually nice and helpful people at Bank of America!

  • Rave: It’s Friday!

Rave: It was pretty warm out at lunchtime!

Rave: It’s supposed to be warm tomorrow!
