Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

  • Rave: Bruce on the radio.
Rave: Early morning walk with the pup, my husband, and some yummy bagels.

    Rant: So sleepy

Rave: Sleepy because I stayed up too late reading a book a friend suggested. It’s really good.

Rant: I forgot the name of the book so I’ll have to recommend it another day. It has a green cover, I think.

  • Rant: Fuzzy slippers on the Metro? Seriously, I know that it is really quiet in DC this week, but this may be taking it a tad too far.

Rant: I want to stay home and wear fuzzy slippers.

Rave: I am getting a ton done at work because no one is here to bug me.

  • rave: quiet commute this morning, quiet office

rant: feeling a bit guilty after telling my brother that i don’t like the girl he is dating. he started dating a girl i went to grad school with and they met a couple times when she was with me. i should be happy for him but feel like they’re moving too fast–he’s spending new years with her and her family in puerto rico. i work in a small field where we all know each other and the thought of possibly having to deal with her on a personal level is upsetting. i should be happy for him, but can’t stand the thought of the two of them together.

  • Rave: no one in the office. Literally it is just me! I already spoke with my dad this morning. 🙂

    Rant: relationship crap.

    Rave: a beer with lunch?

    • Careful – beer at lunch might cause you to fall asleep at your desk later, and with no one there to wake you up when it’s time to go home, you might spend the night at the office. Hah!

    • The answer to beer at lunch is always YES!

  • orderedchaos

Rave: Making great progress on cleaning my disaster of a desk, with the goal of starting the new year with a clean workspace.

Rave: Hitting the press box to cover tonight’s Caps-Rags game, and HBO is here filming their 24/7 series.

Rant: The way the Caps have been playing of late, HBO will likely edit out any footage of the Capitals for humanitarian reasons.

  • Rave: an almost empty office means I can get on with catching up on the things I was supposed to have caught up on before Christmas.
Rave: they’ve thruned the heating up in the building, so it’s nice an snuggly at my desk.
Rant: it’s too warm and snuggly at my desk and I’m having a hard time staying awake. Time for more caffeine!

  • jim_ed

Rave: Quit my job in the suburbs, start my new job downtown after new years. No more daily death race in the car.

Rant: There have been an awful lot of armed robberies within a few blocks of my home lately, and the most recent two occurred at the time I take the dog out at night. Not a fan.

    • Are you near Stanton Park? I’ve seen that there has been at least one each night…Scary!

      • jim_ed

Yeah, I’m a few blocks northeast of Stanton. The neighborhood feels incredibly safe at night, very quiet and peaceful. These robberies have put a bit of a twist on that though.

        • I live over there as well–and I agree it is normally a very nice and quiet neighborhood until this foolishness began. Hopefully the cops will get some props soon for catching them!

  • Rant: Working in retail, I am actually glad the holiday madness is starting to wind down. Seems like Christmas is great for children and STRESSFUL for adults. Love the family, but glad they’re gone.
Rave: My birthday is in a week, PROUD CAPRICORN. I’d love to have a Capricorn birthday mixer…I rarely meet other Capricorns though.
Rant: I will be even older.

  • pennyworth

rave: won my football fantasy league

rant: losing in my futbol fantasy league

  • Rave: I’m back.

Rave: I love my new job — three weeks in and I am ecstatic.

    Rant: Credit card bill, rent!

  • Rave: The holidays are over and my stress level is going down.

Rant: The prospect of moving to VA. Feels a bit like I’ve given up…I’m originally from the DC/MD area and have been living in DC for five years for a well paying job. I want to get out of this area and do something different…where or what is unknown to me at this point. I have the overwhelming feeling that regardless Im stuck…Ill end up living in DC or NOVA (both areas that I dont particularly enjoy) doing the same old thing for the forseeable future…(no offense to the people that love it here…its just not for me). Whats the secret to balancing what you are actually doing in life…to the things that are ideal and hopefully fulfilling?

    • Why do you think you are moving to VA? Maybe you are not an east coast person? Perhaps, since you have a good job right now, you can relocate to Upper North West or just West and try it out.

    • binpetworth

I had a similar dilemma a few years back and found a sabbatical–got a job in my field overseas–allowed me the needed perspective to come back to the DC area and appreciate my situation. Maybe such an opportunity exists for you?

  • my dad didn’t say thank you for the gift I mailed to him for christmas. and i know he got it. he did send me a christmas card, but didn’t even sign it with ‘love, dad’, just ‘dad’.

    • Been there know that first hand. Take a step back and rationalize it.
Should every parent be am amazing loving giving parent? Of course.
Is every parent an amazing loving giving parent? Of course not.
It’s the luck of the draw, you get what you get. Think about it, few people choose to be parents or be loving and responsible for others, most people just choose to drop their pants and end up in the situation. If people ever change it is because they want to, not because somebody else wants them to. You are going to have to deal with it and move on so you do not stagnate in it. Accept him for what he is, not a great parent and one that does not care much about becoming better. Next decide what that means to you; are you better off loving him and not receiving the same in return or are you better off cutting the string and dropping the dead weight? It is very hard to think that way as a child because human nature makes you want to achieve acceptance from your parents. If you stop thinking with your heart and start thinking with your mind you can over come that which is holding you back and causing you pain, sucking the life out of you. Decide for yourself which is the more productive path in your life, accepting it and allowing it to be ok, or cut it loose and spend your positive energy on someone who is glad to return it. A very hard thing to do emotionally but a very simple solution to a big problem, as are most of the questions in life.

Best wishes, hope you find what is right for you.

  • Rant: Huffington Post’s complete and total capitulation to their advertisers. Obnoxious ginger bread men warning me to guard my identity have severely condensed the space for actual content and make the site as visually unappealing as it can be.

Rave: If this is all that is bothering me, life is pretty good.

    • Arianna Huffington is nauseatingly annoying.

    • The advertisers that HuffPo is “capitulating” to are helping to keep the lights on and the salaries paid at HuffPo. They are also allowing you to enjoy HuffPo for free. Just because you’re using something for free doesn’t mean it costs nothing to produce.
For what it’s worth, I just visited the site and the gingerbread men of which you speak are really not that intrusive – at least not to me.

      • MA,
Never opposed to keeping people employed. However, the placement of advertising can either be thoughtful or intrusive. In this case, I consider it wildly intrusive. To my aesthetic sensibility, they’ve taken a ‘marching ants’ approach to their advertising sophistication.

  • RANT: The speed camera under the 3rd Street tunnel (off NY Avenue, heading towards 395). It’s a 4+ lane highway. Why the eff is the speed limit 45mph?! Hate.

RAVE: Hardly anyone at work today. Maybe I can sneak away and check out after Christmas sales. I also have a giant salad for lunch, which is much welcomed after a carb- and sugar-tastic few days.

    • The real rant is about the ticket you get for going 10 mph over: $150.

Rant: I discovered all the new traffic cameras in DC this year!

Rave: It only cost me about $1500.

The only camera that got me twice was the 395 one you mention. It’s all the more frustrating that cameras like this only slow down people for about 5 seconds — after passing the camera, everyone accelerates to 55/60. If they want these cameras to be effective at lowering speeds on the highways, they need to install hundreds more, with fines more along the lines of $25 per picture.

Then again, I don’t really think it’s about safety. I think it’s about something green…

      • $150, yep. I’m worried it got me twice. And yes, at that price, it’s definitely about the green! I’ve gotten one other speeding ticket in my life, down in Spotsylvania County, from an ACTUAL COP (not a camera) and it was less than that. Sigh. I need to be careful with my lead foot.

  • Rave: Santa was really nice to me this year! New towels and a new duvet make my room look great!

Rant: A friend of a friend got diagnosed with breast cancer at age 24. My 22 year old sister has severe hpv and it awaiting the next steps and her 21 year old friend is halfway through a year of chemo for brain cancer. Never thought I would have to worry about these things at age 25.

    • sorry for the health struggle of your friends and family.

    • I’m really sorry.

PoPville, use this as a reminder to get your HPV vaccine, regular paps, and do self-examinations.

      • I thought the vaccine only worked before a certain age?

        • Nope, insurance will only PAY for it before a certain age, but it will still work. Not sure if it works on all strains, but if you know you’re negative, you should get it. I think they just stop paying for it because some ridiculous percentage of people over 25 have it already. Tragic what it can do to some people. Use condoms!!!

        • I have the vaccine and still got hpv. It doesn’t protect against everything. Condoms also help but like everything, do not protect 100%.

  • Not a rant or rave:

Anyone run a Rock and Roll marathon or half marathon before? They are having the first one in DC this year and I am reluctant to do the first of any race but if this organization is top notch I think I will give it a go.

    • R’n’R is a top-notch event company. I’ve never heard a bad thing about them other than some unforeseen race day issues that all race directors have to deal with. That being said I’m worried that the course details have not been finalized. The National Marathon folks seemed to have a good course laid out, but I’m wondering if they are going to try to include more of the downtown sites to make it a “DC” destination race (where “DC” = The Mall). That would be a shame, I thought one of the highlights of this race was that it got into many neighborhoods off the tourist path and was a great running tour of a bunch of Wards. I’d hate to see them just re-hash part of the Marine Corps course. Plus the current course goes right past my house if I need to use the restroom in comfort!

      • I need a race to whip me into shape so I was planning on doing the half (did not get into my annual Cherry Blossom fat purge). I am ok with a so so course, I just don’t want to deal with a nightmarish disorganized race such as the Hot Cocoa debacle or whatever it was called over thanksgiving.

    • My wife ran the 1/2 marathon in New Orleans earlier this year. It was fairly well organized, certainly better than the Hot Chocolate. Too few port-a-potties, and the course was a basic out-and-back affair, but those are pretty minor complaints overall.

    • I think I’m doing the Rock & Roll “USA” half as they killed off the National Marathon apparently and I didn’t get in to Cherry Blossom. Did Rock & Roll Virginia Beach and it was nice.

Only issue – the Rock & Roll prices are INSANE. Make sure to sign up before 12/31 to avoid yet another ridiculous price escalation.

      • I know tons of people that did not get into Cherry Blossom this year. I think we should lobby for DC resident priority. It is our streets that get blocked off and our taxes that support the city.

  • Rant: RIP Cheetah

Rave: “When he didn’t like somebody or something that was going on, he would pick up some poop and throw it at them. He could get you at 30 feet with bars in between.”

  • halfsmoke

    Rant: people wearing Fedoras
Rave: too cold to wear Fedoras right now.

  • Rant: 13th Street between W and U. Good God, DC should demand that these companies fix the streets properly after construction. The patch job that was done is horrible. It’s so uneven I thought my guts were being pushed into my brain. The street was relatively smooth until they started “working” on it.

  • Rave: Won my fantasy football league
Rant: Potholes are killing my car. C’mon Vince Gray.
Rave: CrossFit classes are kicking my butt.

    • I actually had a year-long class with the DC pothole guy from DDOT. His name is Lamont! Needless to say, an endless task that never quite is close to near complete.

  • Rant: Went by the mall in Georgetown and my favorite Chinese restaurant was closed permanently, no details on moving or re-opening plans. I talked with a shop owner there and found out that most of the stores in there haven’t been paying rent for ages now because of a property owner dispute…

That place is such a wasteland now, almost depressing that its not updated, the ancient wood floors creak on the 2nd floor. Sad it might take years for it to be sorted out.

Rave: At least it saves me from worrying about where to park in Georgetown.

  • Rave: MPD arrested someone for the murder of Bill Mitchell.

Rave: No homicides yet this year in Ward 3.

Rant: Wonder why most killings in DC happen in October? Why most in Ward 7? Most in NE? Why most children killed are associated with DYRS? And why nearly 90% or more are male people of color?

  • Rave: Leaving tonight to spend New Year’s with my gf in Paris.
Rant: Her parents will also be there since they rented the flat…?
Rave: Just playing, her parents are cool. PARIS!

  • Rave: Started reading the Hunger Games trilogy, didn’t believe the hype but now I do.

Rant: At office counting down til I can go home and read the last book!

  • Rave – The new site format is terrific on my computer.

Rant – The new site format is terrible on my iPhone.

  • Rave: Huge, beautiful rainbow over Petworth yesterday afternoon.

  • Rave (??): Out for a late afternoon stroll with the dog, just saw a B2 bomber flying over DC/Petworth. Not your typical everyday siting, certainly gave me a double take.
