Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

I thought NPR greeted us with an interesting welcome this morning:

“Good morning, it is Wed., Dec. 7th – the anniversary of Pearl Harbor and Larry Bird’s birthday.”

Hahaha, right?

  • Rave: looking forward to snow tonight/tomorrow!

Rant: sat on a seat wet from the rain and now my pants are going to be wet all day long.

    • Snow? Tonight/tomorrow? RANT. This Florida girl fears snow.

      • claire

Don’t worry – it’s only supposed to be a dusting in the city (and maybe an inch in some suburbs) and certainly won’t stick to any roads. Just enjoy the pretty white coating on the grass tomorrow morning!

  • Rave: Hot showers. One of those things you don’t think a lot about until you don’t have one for a while. Aaaaahhh!

  • Rave: LAST DAY AT WORK! So happy, so thankful, and yet so exhausted and apathetic. Just glad I’m getting out of here with my sanity in tact.

Rave: Ordering four pizzas to celebrate with my cool coworkers and interns.

Rant: For once, I can’t think of anything right now.

  • Rave: Purchased an awesome home.

Rant: Fixing up said home is incredibly expensive. Wow!

Rant: Home warranties aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

    • Re: home warranties – I hope that all new home owners hear that buyer beware message! We had one, tried to use it – only to find that they used every loop hole available to either avoid doing the work or force us to pay for it.

  • Rave: two day respite from terrible morning sickness- I even ate a couple vegetables, which I haven’t done for two months
Rant: The morning sickness is back today 🙁
Rave: Hopefully it’ll be over soon and it’ll be totally worth it to meet the little guy/girl

    • Hope you feel better soon – congrats on the little one on the way! Are you going to find out if you’re having a boy or girl?

      • Thanks! We haven’t decided yet if we’re going to find out. I think I like the surprise factor…

        • you do end up with a significant amount of gifts that “hedge their bets” however. lots of yellow clothes, etc.

          • My favorite clothes on my daughter are the ones people bought us before we knew the sex. (We elected to be surprised.) So many more colors, patterns and prints. Now that people we know we have a girl, it’s more like truck in the pink. Blegh.

        • I always think this conversation is funny. Aren’t you still surprised whether you learn by sono (or whatever they do) or wait to the little one pops out? It’s still a surprise, just a little earlier. Congrats nevertheless.

          • Naw, it’s a different kind of surprise when you get the announcement after hours of labor and/or surgery. That’s the moment you really need it. And the calls to family are so fun!

    • I found I got the most sick on an empty stomach. I kept a box of crackers next to my bed and would stuff a handful in my mouth before even getting out of bed in the morning. It helped!

      And congratulations!

Rant: Every time my dad calls it’s bad news. How did my mother work this deal out? She calls for good news.

Rant: My shoes are still wet from this mornings commute, where I saw 8 fire trucks go up Connecticut to Woodley Park, anyone know what happened there?

Rave: Hot tea and Christmas lights.

  • Revel: Meeting the Danish Ambassador and his energy team last night at the holiday party. And the micro brew beer importers from Western Mass who sponsored the bar.

Rant: Relatively new shoes leaked through the cracked soles, had to go buy new pair of socks after I got to work with soaked feet.

  • PDleftMtP

Rant/rave (you decide): Apparently at the end of the Occupy march this morning, the plan is to spread out along K Street and occupy buildings housing firms that do Bad Things. If you decide to let a stranger piggyback behind you at work today, make sure it’s a conscious choice.

  • bfinpetworth

Rant: Stuck on runway in ATL due to mechanical probs.

Rave: First class so bloodys are being served!

  • Rave – Bloomingdale got a capital bikeshare station at the corner of 1st and T!

Rant – DC is losing millions of dollars a year cause it won’t tax abandoned, blighted or vacant properties at the higher rate. Google “512 Rhode Island Avenue NW.” According to DC, that vacant slum is a functioning business.

    • Well, now I know where I will get a rental car if needed!

In all seriousness, what a joke… Tax them at the 5% or 10% rate. They will either get their act together, and move on the land, or they will lose it to the tax sale, where DC gets cash from it, and someone takes the land who intends to improve it.

Rant: Have been dealing with my landlord about a leak in my bedroom for ages – there have been several iterations now of someone coming out, “fixing” it, and then it leaks again. Most recently, the roofer came out and refused to believe it’s still leaking (says he can’t see where it’s coming in from), and my landlord wanted to move ahead with replastering the ceiling, but there is a very definite leak this morning with all this rain. This guy has a history of hiring incompetent people for fixes around the house (probably whoever is the cheapest is my guess), and it’s really frustrating!

Rave: I don’t own the house and am planning on moving out at the end of the lease.

Rant: If I did own the house, I’d have fixed it right the first time (8 months ago)!

    • Emmaleigh504

That reminds me of a place I rented in college (Crack Palace represent). There was a leak in the bathroom closet that they could never fix. They tore up the wall and checked all the pipes and couldn’t find the leak, so they told us just to ignore it. Since it was in a closet, my roommate and I did just that.

    • GiantSquid

I feel you claire. Our landlords are good people but less than stellar landlords. Have had a leak in the bathroom right in front of the shower since the heavy rains in October. Finally dried out. I imagine it’s back today. Have told landlords and nothing done. Same with other issues in the house. *sigh*

    • You really might not have it fixed. I’m at 6 years now, 4 roofers and my own sleuthing, no visible problems – some have fixed it for 3 years, and it is only a tiny occasional drip after heavy days of rain, but it seems this will never be convincingly fixed.

  • Rant: The rain is like idiot juice falling from the sky for area drivers.

Rave: Best Partner in the World (TM) drove me to work today. I’m more than too jumpy when I’m driving these days – perhaps maternal instincts? Or normal? Who knows. Maryland drivers don’t help to keep me calm.

Rave: It’s FINALLY cooling down. Couldn’t stand the higher than normal temps this late in the year. I’m used to it being well below freezing by now!

  • Rave: Fogo de Chao for our office Christmas party last night and it was awesome!
Rant: My diet went to hell.
Rant: This weather makes me want to just sit in bed in the dark with my cat all day and snooze.

  • Rave: Only 2 more days and I get my live Christmas tree!

Rant: I went to Target at DCUSA and it didn’t have any Chrismtas tree holders. Why does Target hate Christmas?

Rave: I’m going to name my tree “Ralphie.”

    • Join Amazon Prime and you can have a Christmas tree holder with free shipping in time to get your tree.

    • they also didn’t have any wreath holders. the place was mobbed this weekend!

    • claire

That Target is the worst, it’s always mobbed and frequently out of stock on whatever I’m looking for. I’ve taken to ordering nearly everything on Amazon (so I’m seconding Meg’s recommendation here) – better prices, and shipping is typically free and fast.

Extra rant: I don’t like that when I hit reply with the new commenting system, it reloads the page entirely and I have to type in my reply at the top of the comments instead of below the comment I’m replying to – is this something that can be changed?

    • Because it’s the Holidays and not Christmas, or so people think.
A Christmas tree is a Christmas tree. I do not get offended by any other holidays. If you want to have a menorah in your home and celebrate Hanukkah, that’s awesome. I’ll have a Christmas tree in my home and celebrate Christmas and we can still get along 🙂

    • Last weekend I had a fabulous tree experience at Home Depot. They had everything that we needed. Tree, stand, ornaments. Truly great for the shoping averse such as myself. The tree is named Francesca. She is sparkly and beautiful and smells divine. 🙂

    • saf

Go to Home Evil. They still have some.

(My Christmas tree stand broke Monday night. 9:30 and I ‘m in Target being told they have SOLD OUT of tree stands. Luckily, there was no traffic and Home Evil is open until 10.)

  • Rave: Get to see a lot of friends from all over the country/world who are coming into town for the Army-Navy game this weekend!

Rave: The game is an awesome experience for those who haven’t been before, highly recommend it!

Rant: Going there with a heavy heart for those friends who are no longer here but are always with us in spirit.

Rave: Thankful to have two deployments behind us, hopeful that’s the last for a good long while.

    • Thank you for your service. … and GO NAVY!

    • I hope to attend this game someday as well!
Glad to see someone patriotic on here and you must be a strong person to have gone through 2 deployments! Many couples don’t last.

  • Rant: security guards at most downtown office buildings (including National Press Club) to screen potential Occupy DC protesters who dress in Joseph Banks suits as disguises.
Rant: Brooks Brothers and Chanel crowd having a lobbying brunch at the National Press Club — and snarkily attacking protesters as “dirty homeless fools”

Rave: security guards who say they utterly get what Occupy stuff is all about (but are afraid of losing their jobs and thus being able to feed their kids…) and wish they sneak folks in.
Rave: journalist having breakfast at the club playing Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” at the Brooks Brothers and Chanel crowd having their lobbying brunch.
    Only in DC…

  • Rant: Total meltdown this morning. After paying 10,000 to get my basement waterproofed 3 weeks ago, my basement is now leaking in the same place it was. And no one will return my calls and emails from the company (reserving the name in case they come through later).

Rave (ish): Made an appointment with a new therapist to help me move through this crazy homeowner crap and be excited about my house again.

  • holiday birthdays suck. no one’s here, and when they are, they’re busy. no one to celebrate with.

    • binpetworth

I’m a December baby, too, december, with the same rant. Maybe we should schedule a “to hell w/those who choose holiday parties over friends” dinner/drinks fest to commemorate?

      • ooh, maybe! though i am sorely tempted to book a trip to somewhere warm and sunny instead, holiday party obligations be damned!

    • mtpgal

I’m with you too, hon. My birthday is on the 13th and even the husband won’t be around. When I was a kid, one year I up and moved it to August. It was pretty fun, I recommend it. 🙂

      • Emmaleigh504

My December baby cousins always had 2 birthdays, 1 in the summer with all their friends and then their real birthday in December. Plus they got both Christmas and Hanukkah presents. I was always a little jealous.

  • RAVE: work on new roof nearly complete and no more buckets/coolers/other containers needed to capture all that rain last night.
RANT: work still remains on the part by the skylight in the sunporch, which leaked like a sieve.
RAVE: I’m taking tomorrow and Friday off to finish house projects—refurbishing old radiators to have them reinstalled in my house.

  • Rant/rave: Have been busy with some new projects at work and not able to check in on PoP very often.

    Rave: Love the new layout!

Rave: Hubs surprised me with date night on Sunday to see The Muppets. We could have gone to the garbage dump and I still would have been thrilled — love that he planned the night! Made me feel extra-loved 🙂

  • Rant: HHS Secretary overruled FDA Commissioner on her science-based decision to allow Plan B emergency contraception to be sold over the counter. Because we need more unplanned pregnancies. Frickin ridiculous!

  • Rave: Love the new site here and am starting to get used to it.

Rant: Pages don’t refresh automatically when you click to them. If you click to a comment thread that has 20 comments, then go back to the home page, then later go back to the same comment thread, it will still load the 20-comment page instead of whatever has been added in the meantime. You have to refresh manually. Is this on purpose or can it be changed back?

Rant II: Rain makes for some lousy drivers and I’m ashamed that I let it get to me this morning.

Rave: I don’t have to drive tomorrow.

  • I am going out and buy me a Christmas tree this weekend. I don’t have room to store it once Christmas is over, but I will find the room. I love the Christmas holidays because it makes me feel happy inside and not depressed.

  • DC Occupiers outside my building are putting a damper on my quest to run to Starbucs in order to spend a little bit of my share of the 99%s wealth on frivolous mass produced overpriced Christmas flavored hot beverages! Wwwwhhhhinnnne!

  • Was someone looking for little christmas trees on here a few days ago? Am i just dreaming? either way – they are available at Silver Spring Whole Foods, they have 20 or so left. I forgot to check the price.

  • Rant: Had 5 hour ‘new employee orientation’ (number 2) today and am now totally EXHAUSTED! I think it was the bad lighting and ugly paint job that did me in…now have rest of day’s work to catch up on.

Rave: I have a job! And, unlike the previous one, I do NOT loathe going to work every day now! What a nice change.

  • Rant: This rain! My sump pump has been running all day. Puddles are forming in the back yard and the basement smells damp. I don’t even want to go down there. Of course the trashman left the top off of the can.

  • Pearl Harbor Day, Wednesday 7 December 2011.

    Seasons’ greetings.

On this 70th anniversary take a few moments with this beautiful, very moving, poignant, solemn, and befitting tribute both in images and in song,

“The Ballad of the USS Arizona” (1915-1941) by Marshall Catch:
