Dear PoPville – Where to Volunteer on Christmas?

Photo by PoPville flickr user ekelly80

Dear PoPville,

I’m on of the many transients in DC and won’t be able to go home this year. Does PoPville have any recommendations for volunteer work on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day?

A volunteer recs were given back in ’09. Anyone have any good recs for this year?

  • The DCJCC coordinates a huge area wide volunteer event. You can sign up on their website under Day of Service–dcjcc dot org.

    • Ditto. Just chiming-in to say that this is a great event with a lot of different activities to choose from and it is very well-organized; I’ve volunteered with them at a number of events. This year is the 25th anniversary of the volunteer day, too, so it’s going to be extra big. You need to pay a nominal fee to volunteer on Xmas. If you’re not in a position to pay anything right now then they need volunteers to gift-wrap presents the week before Xmas, which is free. That’s also on their website. Enjoy your holidays! 🙂

  • DC Cares is a great resource for volunteering any time!

    • Definitely check out Greater DC Cares! They have a calendar that you can search for whatever sort of volunteer activity you might be interested in doing on Christmas.

  • I’ve volunteered at Food and Friends in past at Thanksgiving and found it a wonderful experience. I’m not sure what they do at Christmas, but, I’d recommend looking into it.

  • Central Union Mission. Not only are they doing great work but they also don’t turn volunteers away!

  • Foor For All is a small volunteer-run organization that delivers food to homebound DC residents, either due to physical or mental illness. Every Saturday, we pack boxes and deliver them to homes all over DC. We can ALWAYS use extra hands (and drivers, if you have access to a car)!

We will be making deliveries on Saturday, December 24th, please come! We meet at 9am in the back of the Universalist Memorial Church at 1810 16th St NW (S St). It’s a minimal time commitment with a great impact on your fellow DC residents in need. Thank you for your interest in giving back to the community!

  • My daughter and I want to serve food on xmas day to the needy in Booston? Who do we call?
