Teaism No Longer Coming to 12th and U St, NW – Will Open Next Store in Old Town, Alexandria But Still Hopes To Come To U Street in the Future

Back in May ’11 I shared the news that the owners of Teaism were planning on opening up a fourth location on U Street (12th and U St, NW.)

I have some sad news for U streeters and some good news for those that live in Old Town, Alexandria. Unfortunately despite the landlord at 12th and U St, NW being super nice and understanding the folks at Teaism simply were unable to secure financing. Co-Owner Michelle Brown tells me that despite the fact they had “invested vast sums” they are “heartbroken” to not be able to pull off the U Street location.

The plans are now to open the fourth store in Old Town, Alexandria where a much smaller financial investment was required and a lease has already been secured. The Old Town location will open March 1st.

Ms. Brown does share some encouraging final words:

“Please don’t give up on us for U Street. We just have to regroup for our next charge!!”

  • Bet the NIMBY condo association was asking for the world. That’s why it’s better when these things get leased up before the condo board gets their hands in the cookie jar. They will want a low-impace tenant that will be willing to pay an arm and a leg.

It’s good for Teaism though. They would not have survived in this location due to the lack of daytime foot traffic of the sort that would frequent Teaism (9-5 office workers)

    • Prince Of Petworth

It’s my understanding that the building was very helpful actually the problem was securing financing from the banks.

Damn. My husband and I were really looking forward to having that in the neighborhood (especially after the loss of Mid City!)

  • This might be good news…you can go to Teaism in Dupont and Chinatown already — how about something new on U Street? And it’s sort of a ripoff anyway. The food is decent, the service isn’t, the tea is okay.

  • Loss of Mid City was sad. Loved their coffee!

The next closest local coffee shop with great coffee is Mediterranean 24/7 @ 1408 U St NW.

(and to the NIMBY hater: why shouldn’t someone want a better situation for their home and neighborhood? NIMBY is someone who wants a quality home life!)

  • Busboys has daytime traffic, the Starbucks at 13&U does fine, Mid City was busy– I think they would have been fine. But there will be plenty of despots available with all the new construction coming.

  • Come to Progression Place!

  • hey, teaism is welcome on h st ne! come on down!

  • Why not go to Peregrine on 14th between R and S (next to Cork)? They don’t have much seating, but their coffee is some of the very best in town (which isn’t something you could reliably say about Mid City). Their tea is also quite good.
