The Taylor Gourmet coming to the old Ruff n Ready space at 1908 14th St, NW is progressing nicely. Ed. Note: Ruff n Ready is now located at 4722 14th St, NW. For those that remember Ruff n Ready – it’s wild to think that is what it looks like inside now:

The only thing I don’t understand – given how delicious their sandwiches are – why highlight Hellmann’s mayonnaise on the sign out front?

I swear that every summer, outdoor movie line-up features the same films. I realize that...
It looks like the bedroom is only accessible through the bathroom. Weird.
Ha! Ha! Do you mean Two Amy's Nursery School - where the parents let their kids run...
Yes, the trash can get annoying. The worst part about it is that it's not only the kids...
Thanks for letting me know. Now I will stay far, far away from Jake's on weekends.
YES! I’ve been looking all over town for where I can get some… Hellman’s?
Something is fishy. I thought Taylor’s didn’t even put Mayo on its stuff.
They’ve made announcements recently about the fact that they are now including mayo/are going to start including mayo as an option. Odd that it would be Hellman’s, though.
Why is that odd? Isn’t Hellmann’s, like, the biggest-selling mayo brand ever? Aren’t most mayos basically the same? Would it be “odd” if Five Guys carried Heinz ketchup (no idea if they do)?
Whether you like it or not, Mayo is a condiment designed for sandwiches – not having it available is very ‘Soup Nazi-ish’. Their sandwiches are great, and many of them don’t need mayo, but as a lover of mayo on my sandwich I am happy they have reconsidered. Let’s all be thankful they don’t use Miracle Whip :X
“designed for sandwiches”?
not quite historically accurate.
Miracle whip is nastyyyy.

Because of “popular demand,” Taylor will now serve mayo on sandwiches.

You know what makes taylor sandwiches better? Mayo
Mustard, which they also now offer
As far as I can tell, the no mayo edict wasn’t anything more than a silly gimmick in the first place. Kind of like hot dog places that refuse to give you ketchup (although I agree with them that a good dog shouldn’t have ketchup on it).
they were trying to be authentic. but people don’t really want authentic.
What’s authentic about not having sandwiches with mayo on them?
they typically don’t put mayo on italian meat sandwiches in the ne.
but i guess you’re really not asking because you sincerely want to understand…..
But the sandwich style is Philly style- not “Italian style”. And we Philly people love us some mayo
.
Huh? I grew up 20 minutes from Philly, and it wouldn’t have even occurrd to anyone to put mayo on a hoagie. It’s like the rule that you don’t combine cheese and fish– most people instinctively know these things don’t go together.
I think McDonalds would disagree
I think the mayo on Italian meat sandwiches is a southern thing. I’d never seen anyone put mayo on an Italian sub, until I dated a girl from rural Virginia who did it. Since we straddle the NE/SE border and have a lot of southerners living here I think they should let them have their mayo.
yes, mayo on meat is a southern thing. sandwich places in the north are mostly either jewish or italian or at least based on that. neither have a tradition of much mayo. that’s what’s “authentic” about it. oil and vinegar is THE deli sandwich dressing.
the south doesn’t have the same traditions and the food has a more african influence, generally. definitely less jewish and italian.
i don’t know anything about the midwest though……you guys like the mayo?
Yo, people from Philly do NOT put mayo on their Italian sandwiches or hoagies. Olive oil, oregano, that’s it.
I would say the Midwest is a hodge podge-mayo is generally always available for sandwiches, but only about 1/3-1/2 of people use it. Of course, midwesterners are big on mayo salads (macaroni salad, potato salad, etc.).
Midwesterners put ketchup on everything.
EVERYTHING
Would you put mayo on a pulled pork sandwich? How about a grilled cheese? There are some sandwiches that traditionally don’t have mayo on them, even if you’re a mayo fanatic. Italian subs/hoagies are one of them. Those cured meats are so fatty that it doesn’t make sense, in my opnion, to add mayo to the mix. Better to have a vinegar-based dressing that cuts through it.
Nevertheless, if I owned a restaurant I’d let the customers but mayo on whatever the hell they wanted, even if I felt they were ruining it.
Yes, I would put mayo on a grilled cheese. But I’m from Alabama.
mayo on a grilled cheese??? holy shit!
deep fry that shit too?
i’m from texas and my family puts mayo on hot dogs
Mayo on grilled cheese sandwiches – yep, that’s how my mom made ‘em.
Wow, I was joking about the amyo on grilled cheese. I had no idea there were people who actually did that!
Authentic like the ones made by the Earl of Sandwich? Because otherwise, “sandwiches” have been made with mayonnaise for at least a couple of centuries.
no, not like that.
how do you know he ate them with mayo? i don’t believe that to be true.
It’s a sandwich shop, not a museum. Just because similar sandwiches in another century and another city were eaten without mayo doesn’t mean it should be banned for all time.
Hellmann’s, hell. Put some Duke’s on those sandwiches.
+1
Mmmmmm Duke’s
+3
Mayo isn’t that hard to make – come on Taylor’s how about some Taylor’s mayo.
that was exactly my thought
They’ve completely sold out to Hellman’s, it would appear.
Great! Now how about some softer bread!

Is it just me, or are Taylor’s sammiches getting skinnier? I love that place, but the last few times I’ve been my sammich has seemed more bread-y, less meat-y. This makes me sad.
They’ve always been like that. They also tend to go overboard with the shredded lettuce, which is why I stick with the Pattison Avenue roast pork or the fried risotto balls.
They have arancini?? Ok, I think I finally need to check this place out.
The Taylor sandwiches can be hit or miss, but Rocky’s Risotto Balls are always consistently excellent: fried light, crisp, and with some excellent marinara. And a reasonable price considering the quality of the ingredients.

Those are the BEST things they make. SOOOOOOO tasty.
Taylor always messes up my order — anything from wrong bread type to completely wrong sandwich. I think they’ve gotten right once. Annoying.
But those little risotto ball thingys are tasty.
I really hope they did something about the CRAZY levels of mold in that building. The basement was an actual health hazard.
I’ve never been overly impressed with Taylor. Their sandwiches either come off as bland, or if broccoli rabe is involved, garlicky as hell.
I don’t think they’re good enough to pull off the rigidly authentic angle. This isn’t DiNic’s we’re talking about. Plus, Taylor has over-expanded, so I guess they need to make sure the larger market gets whatever they ask for.
I want Best Foods. Why can’t I get Best Foods mayonnaise? None of this east coast Hellman’s trash.
Best Foods bought Hellmans. I believe they’re the same product. If you want a change, give Duke’s a shot. It’s not as tangy as Hellmans, but nice and tasty.
I grew up on hoagies in south Jersey. No mayo, ever.
Still, I’m excited about the U Street location. Especially if it’s open late on weekends like the one on H.
Huzzah! This is joyous news!
Best sandwiches I’ve ever had. So excited for this. Except the one on H Street is definitely better than the one at 5th and K..somehow theirs always taste a little off..
Naysayers, where do you go for sandwiches? Any other place I’ve ever tried there’s nothing I like (I don’t eat meat) or the portions are just way too small, or it just doesn’t taste good.
This place has some, well a few, vegetarian options ….
