New Bakery Coming to 1825 Connecitcut Ave, NW in North Dupont

Huffington Post DC shares some interesting details about the old Universal Gourmet space at 1825 Connecticut Ave, NW:

“Bakery entrepreneur Mark Furstenberg, former owner of Marvelous Market and The Breadline, is at work on a new yeast-centric concept: Bread Furst, a retail bakery to be located at 1825 Connecticut Ave. NW, near the Washington Hilton hotel.”

I’ll be sure to update as construction progresses and as they get closer to opening in late Feb.

  • This should be interesting. Mark Furstenberg has a long history here of: (1) baking great bread and (2) not necessarily getting along well with business partners (or sometimes customers), which helps explain why he’s no longer associated with Marvelous Market (which seems to have gone seriously downhill under current management), Breadline, or G Street Foods, the latest venture he helped start but then left (apparently not of his own volition).

    • Then it’s certainly a relief to hear that he’s going into this venture on his own, for the love of bread. This time around, it’ll be Mark himself getting out of bed at 3 AM every morning to knead dough. I can’t wait!

  • Sweet day in the morning it would be nice to have an actual bread-making bakery somewhat near Adams Morgan (and technically based on ANC borders, this is Adams Morgan!).

  • This is great news! DC needs more bakeries.

  • Um, that’s the Hinckley Hilton to anyone who’s lived here more than five years 🙂

  • Sweet! I hope it’s successful.

The old Universal Gourmet was neither – nothing near a universal selection and very, very far from Gourmet. I get it was in the “Universal North” building, but still, couldn’t it have had a better name?

  • Lyon Bakery has a retail kiosk at Union Station if you’re looking to purchase bread from an actual bread bakery. This link shows lists people who retail their bread out. Lyon Bakery has AAAMAZING bread!

  • I’m a little worried what it might do to the wonderful people who run Universal Doughnuts around the corner in the same building. In the meantime, people, go get a breakfast sandwich from them. Delicious!
