Dear PoPville – Is a Fiat Dealership Coming to Logan Circle?

“Dear PoPville,

I was riding my bike to work today and noticed a sign for Fiat of Alexandria in the old Mar de Plata space on 14th street south of P St. Any idea if we’re getting an outpost of the dealership? That would be kind of cool. Those are some seriously small cars, but I guess they’re perfect for city living.”

Mar de Plata closed their location at 1410 14th Street, NW back in May ’09. This space has been vacant since. Unfortunately a Fiat dealership is not coming to the space. I spoke to the number advertised on the Fiat banner and it turns out Mr. Lee’s family owns the building. He flirted with the idea of opening a Fiat marketing office in the space but since he would not be permitted to offer test drives it is not likely going to happen. The sign in the window is simply an advertisement for the Alexandria location, where he is a dealer.

Though no prospective tenants are in negotiations, I gotta think this prime location won’t sit vacant for too many more years.

  • Hopefully a cupcake place!

  • No way. I think we could use a restaurant that’s really just a bar.

  • Those cars are ridiculously small. They make the Mini Cooper look like a Cadillac. They’re probably pretty good if parallel parking in tight spots is a priority, though. And the convertible is kind of neat.

I have to admit, I love the idea of a car dealership returning to Auto Row!

  • while it would have mixed up the retail scene for sure, I think I’ll get over it.

also I lived across the street from some urban car dealerships in boston for a bit and they’re ugly. obviously it can be accomplished in various ways but a dealership needs a lot of parking.

  • I wish a good Cuban restaurant with a walk up window (Miami style) would open there. Fast Gourmet is a great alternative at 14th and W. Nothing better than a walk up window for a capp, empanada, pastelito or a cuban sandwich!!!

Someone hop to this idea… snap snap :)

  • nuff with food already!

  • How about an Apple store or just a good cell phone store? Driving into Georgetown or finding parking on L Street at the Verizon store is a huge PITA.
Plus I must point out that a new coffeeshop needs to open somewhere between Logan Circle and U street to replace Mid City, since Peregrin is too tiny and the choclate store is too tempting. Also, I just discovered Dunkin Donuts coffee sucks and they don’t let you mix your own creamer in, WTF?
