  • Rant – I am dying to get out of DC. I know a lot of you love it, but it’s not for me. There are many sub-rants that go along with this, but I’ll save those for another day.

Rant – Had what I thought was a great job interview almost 2 weeks ago, but they haven’t contacted me at all since then. Not even to tell me they chose someone else. PLEASE just let me know that I didn’t get it. I don’t care if it’s a form letter.

Rave – Going to an out-of-state wedding in 2 weeks, which means a mini-vaca for us!

    • Don’t lose hope yet. I had a job interview and was told, explicitly, “we have one more candidate to talk to, and we will call you by Friday of this week”. Two weeks passed, no word from them, so I wrote them off. Got the call two days ago.

      • Yeah…it’s exhausting to keep waiting for a call though. They interviewed everyone for the position on the same day, so I thought I would have heard something much sooner. I’m disappointed because I think I would have been a great fit for the position, and the pay was great. I’m pretty deflated.

        • I’m in pretty much the same place. I’ve been trying to just keep applying to new jobs to prevent the deflation/exhaustion factor, in case I don’t get this one so everything isn’t pinned on one thing and I keep options open. But the deflation/exhaustion keeps creeping back up.

On the plus side, I agree with WDC on don’t give up hope completely. I was just starting to give up on the call for a 2nd interview after 3 weeks of waiting. Even though 3 weeks isn’t that long, I know they need to hire somebody soon so it seemed like a bad sign. Then I found out from my friend who works there that the decision-maker had to leave the country unexpectedly for 3 weeks right after my interview. I had kind of forgotten that she has this crazy intense job aside from hiring for the new position.

Does it seem like a lot of people lately are really frustrated with their jobs and ready to move? I mean, more than usual, among my friends and on this blog.

        • me

Just to give you my own story- in early July, I had an interview for a company. I didn’t hear back until about 3 weeks later, asking me to come in for another interview with a partner who wasn’t able to make the first one. There was no contact between the recruiter and myself in that amount of time, other than me sending an email to thank him. After about another week, I got the job. I know it’s easy for me to say since I’m on the other side of things now, but try to stay positive. I hope it works out for you.

  • Rant: Where is the coverage of the Adams Morgan Day festival? There are like a total of four photos of it on the internet. Would like to see more coverage from DC blogs

Rave: The weather is absolutely amazing.

    • Prince Of Petworth

I was very sad to be out of town for Adams Morgan Day – how was it? If anyone has some photos send me a few in an email at princeofpetworth(at)gmail or upload some to the PoPville flickr pool. Thanks.

      • Overall, it was nice. a lot less crowded compared with last few years. I don’t know if it was just me, but the 9/11 anniversary definitely tamed the usual party feel of this festival. still, it made for great people watching, awesome music, nice selection of artists and tasty food.

      • A great time! The best was when a uniformed police officer sang “New York, New York” at the karaoke stand set up near Bourbon – the crowd loved it. It was nice to enjoy their neighborhood festival after Columbia Heights Day was canceled.

  • Rant: First full week back at work after vacation.

Rave: The “terrible two” as I call them are out of the office today! Things are already more relaxed!

  • me

Rave: I had a great weekend in my old college town, meeting up with my parents (as it’s halfway between us) and some old friends.

Rant: I think I’m still hungover from Saturday night. I’m so tired, I just can’t think straight.

One more rant: My clearance still isn’t crossed over, so I’m just kind of sitting here with nothing to do. I’m about ready to pull a Costanza under my desk.

  • Rave: Redskins Win!

    Rant: none really

  • claire

Rave: Hit up the DC Brau brewery on Saturday, and it was a great little trip! Plus I got a growler of the special beer they brewed for H St Fest.
Rave: Feel good about how my weekend went – actually got out and about a fair bit and got some errands done.

Rant: Back at work, and each week, the 9-5 feels a little worse.

  • Rant: some asshole driver near 14th and Euclid yelling as loud as he can “I’LL KILL YOU!!!” when he was perfectly aligned with me as I was biking up the hill and flooring the gas pedal and speeding off before I could catch his license plate. (Maryland, btw)

Rave: maintaining control of my bike and not crashing even thought I’ve never been more startled in my life while biking.

  • RANT: boyfriend’s car was stolen from 14th street early sunday morning. It was reported stolen to the police who then canvassed the area and ensured it wasn’t towed. Hours spent on phone with insurance company and others.

RAVE: after 8 hours of hell, found out car WAS towed

RANT: DCPD still has NO record of the car being towed and is considering it stolen until they can meet my BF at the impound lot for proof

    • Sometimes the secret service tows cars too.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but “ghost tows” are part of the charm of DC. They’re a real PITA, but they’re part of the landscape here. You need to not get too worked up about it, because it happens all the time.

    • Seems like parking legally in the first place would have spared a lot of frustration.

      • Right, cause they’ve never EVER made a mistake and towed a legally-parked car. Except maybe mine, which was ticketed and then towed for “rush hour zone” while parked on my small, residential, non-rush-hour-restricted street.

  • I don’t know which this is: we found an amazing house. We weren’t looking to move, but this is seemingly perfect.

  • Rant: Our car was hit sometime this weekend, while parked on the East side of the 3200 block of 13th st NW, in the middle of the block. It’s an old BMW Z3, black. If anybody saw anything, please chime in…

  • Revel: I want to quit my job and be the City of Alexandria’s Town Crier!

  • Anyone knows anything about a stabbing Saturday night ( Around 10 pm) corner of Newton and Mt.Pleasant St.?
Saw the ambulance there and police were chasing some young punks who were hanging around there just a few minutes before.
Have not seen anything on any news venue.

  • I’m far too good looking for this town.

  • pablo .raw

Rant: a little button of my very new camera broke yesterday during Adams Morgan day
Rave: Somehow the little piece was stuck to my finger, so I didn’t loose it
Rant: I’m going to have to shoot 2 weddings this weekend with that camera
Rave: I have 3 cameras, so I’ll be fine

  • Rave: had fun at the ABBA revival concert at Wolf Trap last night.
Rant: the concert only went 90 minutes
Rave: early end time meant we got home by 10:30

Bonus Rave: went for a 20 mile bike ride this morning before work, and the weather was gorgous! Almost needed something besides a thin t-shirt. And it gets even better later in the week!

Rave: Research in Ethiopia went really well, and Rwanda is off to a good start so far. Hoping it will make up for the disaster that was South Africa.

Rave: Heading home this weekend after 7 weeks of travel. I am loving the experience, but living out of a suitcase is getting really old.

    • Emmaleigh504

I’m very curious about what you are researching, people? animals? infrastructure? I don’t know enough about that part of the world to make something up.

  • Rant: Apartment Mgmt is increasing my rent by $200 if I don’t renew for a year lease. Otherwise the increase is $50. $200 seems excessive, especially given that the area has less to offer now than it did when i moved in last year (Wisconsin Ave, across from the soon to be closed Giant and all of the strip mall businesses that closed a few months ago to make way for construction that may never happen). I wonder if I can negotiate the $200 increase down to something more sane?

Revel: My boss and his henchman are out of the office for a few more hours.

    • How about $100 increase for a sixth month lease?

    • Is this legal? I’d figure out what the cap is that they are allowed to raise the rent. Unless your rent is 2k, it might be illegal to raise it $200 b/c I though the limit was 10%. obviously this depends on the type of property, but it’s worth checking into.

Rant: Laid off. Well, not yet, but in October.

Rave: It’s not raining any more!

  • Rant: UT coaching staff investing way too much time in Garret Gilbert over the past 2 seasons.

Rave: UT coaching staff finally waking up and realizing that Case McCoy can play.

  • Rave: Got my wife pregnant, finally.

Rant: Shady Grove Fertility flat out lied to us. We got a 2nd opinion and solved a problem for a $15 prescription and saved ourselves $5k.

    • Congrats! Though makes me curious what the prescription was for. 🙂 I hear the Shady Grove Fertility commercials all the time – clearly I am immature as going to “Shady Grove” to get pregnant makes me laugh.

      • Re: what the prescription was for. So many inappropriate jokes. Can’t decide where to begin.

      • All I hear in those commercials is, “One Shady Grove Fertility baby is born every three hours!” And all I can think is, “How the hell are we going to have enough jobs for ALL THESE PEOPLE.”

      • Synthyroid. Simple thyroid level issue.

SGF wanted to do IUI with chlomid.

    • Getting pregnant was a lot of fun. Congrats! I guess it’s too late to yell “Don’t do it! Save yourselves!!”
P.S. Even though she can’t drink and her feet will start getting tired, get out often over the next several months. You have to make up for all the nights out you are about to not have anymore. Also, surprise her with a gift certificate for pedicures, you will be the MAN.

Please give details?? My husband and I have been trying for almost a year and I’m so curious. Not to mention, we don’t want to spend so much for a fertility clinic. It’s not like we couldn’t afford it, but it’d just be nice to not have to…

      • Jesus, it’s impossible not to get pushed to a fertility clinic. Every OBGYN we and GP we talked to in this town has given up on the fertility trade. We were trying to avoid Fertility clinics, because I knew they were all high priced used car salesman (Shady Grove Fertility completely validated this belief). However, they were the only ones that would do the testing (both my wife and I). The problem of course, is that when you’re an expensive hammer, everything is a nail. They lied to us and tried to get us to sign up for IUI + chlomid immediately. We balked.

Go get all the screening at SGF or DF, just don’t pull the trigger on their “solutions” until you get the results vetted by another competent doctor. We went and saw an endocrinologist when the Thyroid levels were high, but not necessarily “out of spec”. Turns out just getting the thyroid levels lower got my wife pregnant the next month. SGF had a $5k solution that had no guarantee of success and, if unsuccessful, led to a $20k solution.

Rant: possible sinus infection and no time off to go to the Doc.

Rant: lost my laundry card that may or may not have had $$ on it.

Rave: ran into my wonderful apartment manager when I went on a Hail Mary hunt for the lost card in the laundry room. He gave me an extra card he had and I got to see inside his apartment.

Rant: now I want a bigger apartment.

    Rave: clean clothes.

  • Rave: Washington team beats the Giants!
Rant: Think the name when combined with the logo is racist. Keep the name; change the logo to a redskin potato—source of strength!

Rave: Put up a new ceiling fan this weekend.
Rave: ceiling fans above the bed!

  • Revel: Nice relaxing weekend with the man.
Revel x2: H st festival this weekend!
    Rant: Security theater.
    Rant x2: back to work.

  • Rave: Don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m delighted that the PoP is back! It was sad not getting the up-to-the-minute scoop and gossip on everything last week.

    • Prince Of Petworth

Thanks e, while I had an amazing vacation, I also was going through a bit of withdrawal. So happy to be back!

      • We better get some good pictures of you wearing your Prince of Petworth t-shirts in front of all sorts of worldly monuments and beautifully exotic, Third World locales!

  • Rave: Cant wait for a week in Florida with my boyfriend.
Rave: Called my councilmember about a pile of mattresses dumped in my alley. Gone the next day! Who would have thought?

  • Rant: hurricane blew water into my new kitchen vent ruining 3 brand new kitchen cabinets. Additional rains made it worse.

Rave: called insurance they say completely covered and will pay. The adjuster called last week, and asked if I had roof damage. I said no, he said we’ll look at that anyway.

Rant: Yesterday morning I went to take a shower (2nd flr) and noticed plaster in the tub…water seeped in through the roof…I have roof damage.

    Rave: Still covered by insurance!

  • Rant: I now have a new waterfall in my house, and its not the nice kind that you see in Thai restaurants. Just enough damage to be under my 1,000$ insurance deductible.

Rant: I went on vacation last week and spent the money I could have used in repairs detailed in the first rant. I hope it doesn’t rain again for 2 weeks.

Rave: I got my dog back from boarding, cost me a small fortune, almost as much as I spent on hotel nights for my vacation. The hidden fees are ridiculous, next time, I’m just going to Hawaii, hotels at local beaches cost just as much.

  • Rave: Bought a ticket to the Matt Nathanson show at the 9:30 Club. Saw him at Jammin Java a few months ago and it was a great show. Really looking forward to it. Also looking forward to going to see The Legwarmers at the State Theatre in 2 weeks with my best friend and her husband.

Rant: Knowing the way my life works if I get this Army job I’ve been waiting and waiting on they’ll want me to report on one of those 2 dates. Or at least I can only hope.

  • rant: No Boyfriend!
