  • The whole hobby of collecting and restoring old mechanical musical instruments seems to be in the doldrums in recent years. Interest in these had a resurgence in the post-WW II years, and large collections of various such instruments were amassed by a number of individuals. If one visited a museum or collection, you’d be able to purchase an LP (or later on a cassette) featuring one or several such players in action. It must be said—-the Cremona performance is remarkable for the whole thing being relatively in tune: the pipes with the piano, and the piano with itself. So many of those old LPs—and a large number of Youtube videos—feature machines that are just woefully out of tune. “But it sounds old-timey that way”. Not so much.

  • Orchestrions are absolutely wonderful. I can see why that cover won.
