  • Tip: there’s a house in the 1300 block of Monroe Street with a large crop of corn or something in the front yard. Pretty impressive, if weird looking.

  • Taro plants buy the bulbs in the spring….

  • The ones with gigantic leaves are called Elephant Ear plants, and there are some pretty awesome varieties of them. One of the houses on Arkansas, near the entrance to Piney Branch has a sweet set of them.

  • This plant with big leaf are called in spanish YAUTIA and the people from the caribbean island eat their roots.

  • Elephant ear is just kind of a generic name for this type of plant, this specific one is taro, and it is indeed a food staple in many parts of the world.

  • The courtyard of my building in Mt. Pleasant had a great set of these funky things, but they went the way of our shady trees: ripped out by the condo folks in favor of tidier, yuppie-friendly terrain.
