The 5pm Post – Backyard wildlife habitat workshop on Sat.

From an email:

The District Department of the Environment and Audubon MD/DC is holding a backyard wildlife habitat workshop at Columbia Heights Recreation Center on Saturday July 23 from 1-4pm.

The workshop will consist of an hour of slideshow presentations on creating wildlife habitat and gardening with native plants, after which we will plant a garden with locally native plants. Participants will receive a book (“Bringing Nature Home” by Douglas Tallamy), a birdhouse kit and live plants to bring home. The workshop is free and open to the public. Register online here (click on “Backyard Habitat Education”).

  • I love this event, because big things come in small places!

    darn squirrels!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Please note the time seems to have changed to 10am-2pm due to the heat!

  • Due to the extreme heat, which is expected to last through Sunday, DDOE and DPR have decided to postpone the Backyard Habitat Workshop that was scheduled for July 23 at Columbia Heights Recreation Center. DPR has suspended all activities for this weekend, but recreation centers will be open to act as cooling stations.

We will most likely choose a Saturday in September for the new date – August (and, obviously, July) can be a tough time to plant a garden.

    • This was very disappointing display of governance and a waste of time. The only thing on the website Saturday morning was a change of time. It would have been considerate to put the cancellation on the website, or at least a note on the door. I might ask, why have us register and give email addresses if you don’t use them to inform registered attendees about changes?
