Rant/Rave: After the awful happenings at the festival this past weekend, I think this may be gaining more popularity: http://recallvincegray.com/

Rave: I am so glad that the oppressive DC heat isn’t upon us yet.

    Rant: It’s Monday. Boo.

  • Rant: the Caribbean Parade/ga. Ave shootings, brawls, lunacy; bricks through the glass at Room 11; Vince Gray; mosquitos; my brother bogarting our family’s place at the beach for July 4th; PEPCO bills; neighborhoods at war with Georgetown, AU, Howard for dumbass NIMBY reasons (they could be putting folks from across the Anacostia River next door to your spoiled asses); my sister’s ignorant ex husband

Revel: recalling how cool the Caribbean Parade on Ga. Ave used to be; Z Burger coming to CH; watching koi eat a tomato floating on the surface of the pond.

    • Ooooh ditto rant on the mosquitoes. Bloodsucking bastards.

RAVE: This weekend, while painting outdoors, I used one of those “Off” personal fans that clip on your shirt or shorts. You can’t smell it, it apparently lasts for about 12 hours as long as you use it within 2 weeks of opening it, and within 30 seconds of turning it on, I had NO BUGS on me at all. No mosquitoes, no dog-pecker gnats (you know, the ones you always see around dogs’ hind ends and don’t bite, but are just a huge pain). So, FWIW, it is totally worth getting one.

  • The Zoo incident, now the caribbean festival. I guess the elements that create these situations will require we have fewer festivals etc, until we get a mayor, a police force and a judicial system that starts performing and cleaning up the streets.

  • RANT: Got a tip from a neighbor that another neighbor is complaining about me parking my car in my driveway. YES, it sticks out approximately 6″ into the sidewalk, but it does not disrupt the pedestrian traffic. YES, I know that this is illegal. But YES, I have also asked all the new neighbors I have met (she is the ONLY ONE who has not said hi to us) if they mind, and they have said no. If you have something to say, knock on my door and say it to me. Quit this passive aggressive thing. If it bothers you, tell me directly and I’ll stop doing it. I’m happy to take up a coveted street spot if that’s what you’d prefer. And lately I’m more worried about the house next door (the one that looks abandoned but is NOT) with the five raccoons taking up residence on the second floor. THAT seems a wee bit more important right now.

RAVE: Other than Miss Passive Aggressive, our new neighbors are great! Even the resident of the not-abandoned house. Enjoyed chatting with all of them this weekend.

    • I hope Miss Passive Aggressive doesn’t read this blog, or else you’ll have “Lord of Petworth”-ed yourself! 😛

      • Ha! Yes, indeed! I had half a mind to go knock on her door but couldn’t decide between “Hi, we just moved in down the block, how are you?” or “You wanna piece-a me?!?” — I suppose I am being passive aggressive myself in just writing about the whole thing rather than saying something…

    • You know it’s illegal, and you know it’s annoying your neighbor, so are you going to stop? If you’d ask her if it would annoy her and she’d said yes, would you have refrained from doing it?

      • The rant is more about the “I will only say something to others, not to you specifically” passive aggressive technique. Another neighbor told me that she was complaining. If she says something to me directly, or if an opportunity presents itself for me to say “Hi, I don’t think we’ve met, we just moved in recently” and I ask her about it and she says it bothers her, then YES, I will refrain.

  • Rave: Relaxed and productive weekend all rolled into one.

Rave: At least one developer is interested in buying my building from the poorly-run and bankrupt co-op that currently manages it.

Rave: I own my place as a condo so my ownership of my unit is not affected by the bankruptcy proceedings, even if they decide to liquidate.

Rant: Said co-op tells condo owners in the building nothing about what is going on. Zero. It is beyond frustrating.

Question for PoPville: does anyone know anything about Jair Lynch Developers? Good reputation? Bad? Somewhere in the middle?

  • RAVE: New community garden construction at Bruce Monroe!

RANT: My aching back. Also, some participants in the Carribean Festival, aka, why we can’t have nice things on Georgia Ave

  • Rant: my house got tagged this weekend. GRRRRRRRRRR.

Rave: my little pup finally learned how to walk on a leash.

  • Rant: Missed my friend’s going away/birthday party because the Shaw/Howard metro was so awful Saturday, and I couldn’t afford a cab.

Rave: Met a very sweet dog on Sunday that might just come live with me as soon as I get settled in my new place!!

    • Dogs are expensive. If you can’t afford a cab, you probably shouldn’t get a dog.

    • I know this is going to sound super bitchy, but if you can’t afford a cab ride how can you afford a dog? I volunteer regularly with a rescue and we get many dogs in because people eventually realize they can’t afford them. Think twice and crunch those numbers, animals are expensive!!!

      • +1000 Vet bills are no joke, and the basic supplies for a dog every week are more than a cab. Try to consider this, please.

    • It was more that I didn’t have the cash, less that I didn’t actually have money. I don’t like to take cabs, and I don’t factor them into my budget. I have a good job and savings in the bank that includes a doggy-emergency fund (more than that 1000 vet bill someone mentioned) that I have been adding to for a few months.
thank you all for your concern, but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I know I can afford to give that dog a good home.

    • You realize that Shaw isn’t that far from other metro stops and you could have just walked to U st. or Mt. Vernon square? Or maybe a cheaper cab ride to one of those stations. Doesn’t seem like a reason to miss the party!

      • I couldn’t have walked to U st, as there was a group of about 100 kids blocking traffic ,screaming, and hitting one another between Florida and Rhode Island on 7th. The police officers (6 of them) outside Shaw when I tried to go in Shaw told me it was exit only, and that the Metro had just been the scene of a huge fight. Having spent some time earlier in the day in the metro, I didn’t fancy my chances. Basically I was a cash-poor scaredy cat.

Rave: opened a kitchen cabinet this morning, and discovered a bag of Double Chocolate Milano cookies that my super nice friend brought last weekend. Forgot it was there. Such a nice surprise on a Monday morning. Gonna have a double choc. Milano with my vanilla ice cream tonight….

  • Rave: DCDPW crew raking trash from the grass and curb on my block of Warder St into the street for pickup after the festival Saturday.

Rant: DCDPW sweeper truck never came by to pick up the trash that had been swept into the street.

Rant: If DC is going to do a Mardi Gras style cleanup following the Caribbean festival, then do it right. Line up the sweepers in a tight row from curb to curb and get all the trash in one pass, as opposed to having a bunch of trucks veering aimlessly from one side of the road to the other spraying dirt everywhere. It’s also a great way to tell people the festival is over and it’s time for you to go somewhere else.

    • What do you expect? This town, especially under the Gray administration, has a very hard time even getting the simplest things right.

      • that’s not been my perspective. i’ve lived in dc since barry was in office. i’ve not noticed a decline in any of the city services i need since gray took office.
        maybe you have an agenda.

  • bfinpetworth

Rant: Trash left in the neighborhood after Saturday’s “festivities.”

Rave: Getting out of town with partner and dogs and heading to Va Beach for the long 4th weekend, partly to avoid the craziness that is the 4th of July in Petworth.

    Rave: Marriage Equality!!!

  • rave: getting a seat next to the window on the s-2 on my way home from work last night

rant: the metro sucking all the time

  • Rant/Rave: Last full week in DC, hello NYC!

    • Hope you meant that as more of a rant than a rave, or else people will jump all over you. Best of luck in your new home!

  • Rant/Rave: Gallbladder is coming out on Wednesday. I am really really hoping that it takes care of a lot of the nausea, pain etc issues I’ve been having for the last few months.

Rant: My birthday is Saturday. I think I’m going to have to reschedule it for later when I’m not recovering from organ removal.

  • Rave: I had a blast at the parade on Saturday. It was a lot of fun.

Rant: People who complain about the parade. Especially, ones who haven’t grown up here.

  • Rave, or at least Props to the Cops:
For arresting a suspect in the shooting Saturday.

Rant: Sounds like this is the second time that the suspect, a “well known gangmember”, was “targeted” by someone and an innocent bystander was killed (in this case, three other people were also wounded).

  • Rave: King & I Pizza (on Upshur just off Georgia) opened this weekend — very nice owners/staff and decent, fairly-priced pizza (and Greek food), right around the corner from my house!

Rant: Bummed that the Caribbean Day unpleasantness is casting a pall over what COULD be (and was, at times) a pretty awesome event.

    • Decent pizza? Can you provide a basis of comparison – like Papa John’s decent? Jumbo slice decent? Albertos? Vace?

  • rave: peaceful cloudy morning watering the garden in my backyard.

rant: turning around to find a creepy guy pleasuring himself in the alley right behind me.

    • while he was watching you water your garden? gross yet kind of funny. (to think about anyway, I’m sure it wouldn’t be funny to see in person!)

  • Rant: Neighbors setting up a picnic table for their whole family in the Fairmont/Euclid alleyway b/w 11 and 13th. This is absolutely not private property – it is equivalent to setting up a picnic in the middle of Euclid or Fairmont streets. Won’t let it happen again.

  • msmaryedith

Rant: I went tubing with friends at BTI this weekend and ended up with a rash all over my neck, chest and back. I went to a dermatologist this morning and he said it’s a bacterial skin infection from the life jacket they gave me. Eww… Plus got to spend another $50 on the copay/antibiotic cream on top of the $32 for nasty tube and vest rental.

Rave: Awesome new dermatologist that squeezed me in for an appointment.

  • Rant: Got home late Sat from a glorious day at the beach to find some asshole had stripped and abandoned a car right in front of my house.

Rave: The cops responded immediately to the abandoned car and ticketed it like crazy. Too bad I have to wait 5 days before they haul it away.

  • Rave x 1000: I do not have bed bugs…just a slight case of paranoia.

  • Rant: My lunch date stood me up today. No phone call, text, email nothing. Just no show. And this is after talking to him LAST NIGHT and making these plans so the chances of it being forgotten are slim to none. I give up. :O(

Rave: I’m cute as hell, it’s summertime and another one will be along to pick up where that one left off. BOOYAH!

  • Rant: moving classroom eight times in six years, jezus. can’t catch a break… little kids need lots of stchtufff, thought I’d be planning for a new grade and going to the beach for a week, instead I’ll be cleaning out the old teach’s room again. so much crap. cleaning out my own house is bad enough. if this is not the last time, next time, i’m out.
