Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

I was trimming the hedges yesterday and in one bush there was a bird’s nest inside. Awesome. However, when I unknowingly got a bit too close, one of the birds dive bombed my head for like 5 minutes as I ran across the street from the attack waving my hedge clippers around like a madman in an attempted defense. I think my neighbor is still laughing…

  • Rant: Someone stole my garden hose from off the front of my house, which is separated from the street by a cast-iron fence. A garden hose? Really?

Rave: Schneider’s has some sixers of Short’s left over from Savor. You aren’t likely to find these outside of Michigan, so once they’re gone, they’re gone.

    • Yeah, like the stolen cushion somebody posted about a few days ago… WTF? Somebody stole a frickin’ sprinkler from our front yard last summer, so now I don’t leave ANYthing outside over night. Living in the city sucks/is awesome.

“Schneider’s has some sixers of Short’s left over from Savor.”
The most confusing sentence ever! 🙂

      • Short’s = a brewery in northern Michigan, with a distribution that doesn’t reach DC.
        sixer = a six-pack
Savor = “An American Craft Beer & Food Experience on June 3-4, 2011 at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. ”
Schneider’s = an awesome beer/liquor store on the Hill

    • someone stole the sprayer off my garden hose. left the hose, just took the attachment. Cheers!

  • Rave: Weiner’s resigning!

    • Another sad day for America. Another victory for the Puritans.

      • Weiner’s pulling out?

      • As a liberal atheist, I’m glad to see him go. It’s one thing to not live the puritanical lifestyle, but to lie about it and try to cover it up is pretty feeble.

      • How is this a sad day for America? Aren’t there hundreds of liberals who are ready to take his place in the House?

How is this a victory for Puritans? Most of the calls for him to step down were from Democrats, not Republicans (generally associates with puritans)

        • Yeah, it was Pelosi who demanded a “Weiner Probe.” Also, that Rep. Weiner’s activities be investigated.

        • Yes, there are hundreds of liberals ready to take his place. And while Repubs are often associated with puritanism, many democrats are puritanical in their ways. Pelosi and her ilk are just capitulating to the puritan sentiment so pervasive in the society.

          • I guess by “puritanical standards” sending unsolicited (or solicited) photos of yourself to women who aren’t your pregnant wife would fall in the boundaries of immoral, but I think by most standards of morality that crosses a line. It not like Weiner was thrown out of office Puritan upset he was using the witchcraft that is technology.

I’m also not sure he is resigning for political reasons. If that were the case, why not do it after Breitbart’s done hogging your stage? I think his wife was probably the prevailing influence and certainly that should be respected to a degree. Having a new family is tough enough without this swirling around.

    • I just wish Vitter would have resigned when he was caught paying a Madam for sleeping with prostitutes. Or that Ensign had resigned right away instead of a year+ later for sleeping with the wife of a friend and paying off her husband with a job. Then there was Senator Craig.

  • Rant: We just can’t seem to get healthy. Both mommies are down and out with colds that won’t go away that we caught from our little man. He is feeling fine btw.

Rave: Little man is crawling and pulling himself up to standing on things at 6.5 months old. I know it is early, but it is pretty cool!

    • Mine was standing at 5.5 months, so it happens. Beware, though: kids who become more physical early often start talking later, and it can cause undue stress as a parent.

    • Welcome to parenthood! I have been sick more in the last two years than in the previous 10 or 15 years combined. Just wait until you hit the stomach bugs. 🙂

Also, you may have an early walker on your hands; beware! My little guy walked at 8.5 months–it was hilarious because he was SO small but we had to get busy on babyproofing really fast.

  • Rant: my lovely neighbors, whome my row-house shares a wall, ‘forgot’ to take their garbage out yesterday and now the I can smell their filth from my back patio. As usual.

Rave: at least their using garbage bags. For a while, they were not.

    • Rant: People who don’t know the difference between “there”, “their”, “they’re”

Rave: At least Weiner was sexting a pornstar that was somewhat attractive. Seems like sex scandals with p-stars usually revolve around busted or silicone women.

  • Rant: My silly neighbors flowers looking fantastic while mine look like crap all the time.

Rave: My neighbor has a really beautiful front lawn/garden.

Rave: To the readers who mention Weiner is resigning. I saw the headline “Weiner Out” and thought it was just another gross and graphic picture he sent.

Rant: I had an appointment for a check-up at a new doctor’s office this afternoon, yet I have called and they don’t have my appointment or information anywhere. And I waited weeks to get in. Having to get a check-up every 6 months is a pain in the ass, without having to reschedule due to idiots like this.

Rave: I can still believe I am cancer-free due to my last check-up, and I won’t have to worry about results for awhile since I won’t be able to get another appointment for at least a few weeks.

    • Best of luck with your results and getting a new appointment scheduled!

Rave: Your comment helped me put my (relatively minor) medical problem in to perspective. Thank you for that!

      • me

Thank you, I appreciate the good thoughts. I assume by your name that you’re a woman- get your yearly exam! It saved my life, perhaps it will save yours! 🙂

  • Rave: Bruins!

  • Rave: My short-term french roommate still doesn’t really get the difference in pronunciation between winner and wiener. “Winner – Wiener – Winner – Wiener, nope that sound pretty much the same to me!”

Rant: I guess you can’t write house sharing rules that would say “If you are here for only 2 months and pay the least rent in the house, it’s uncool to have guys over for dinner 2 days after moving in, and twice a week thereafter.” Sigh. Although from now on I will write “Don’t put your boyfriend on speakerphone while you cook if you’re not alone in the kitchen.” and “Your live-in landlord is not obligated to provide you an iron or more coat hangers than your unfurnished room already had, or go out of their way to purchase them for you. And protesting that you really need them and why you really need them them doesn’t change anything to that. Not your mommy” Damn kids.

    • Is she hot? Since she’s European you might get to see her sunbathing topless.

    • The fact that she doesn’t pay as much rent doesn’t mean that she’s less entitled to use the house. Do you allocate fridge space by portion of rent? Yeesh. It is bad housemate etiquette to use speakerphone, and the business about the iron and hangers is silly, but as a rent-paying member of the house, she’s entitled to entertain there. You should have been more careful about vetting for lifestyle. Damn landlords…

    • Having people over for dinner is a problem? Anti-social are we? It’s not like she’s using your food to make the dinner or leaving a huge mess (or if she is you didn’t say so)

      • me

That being said, I would be a bit skeeved out if a new roommate started bringing over random guys she just met and started banging cause I’d fear that they would steal my stuff.

  • Rant: People being happy about Weiner Resigning and nopt uttering David Vitter’s name in the same sentence and the fact he is still in the senate.

    Rave: going to beach tomorrow!!!!

  • Rant: My Republican family member who insists on forwarding every single piece of internet drivel about Obama, no matter how ridiculous:

He’s a Muslim (and Muslims are evil). He was born in Kenya. He was born in Indonesia. He kneels at the feet of Rev Wright (while somehow being a Muslim at the same time). He wants to overthrow our glorious capitalistic country. He hates veterans. etc, etc…

I shoot down each one using Snopes/logic/facts, but it doesn’t seem to matter. In fact, he never acknowledges, despite the pile of evidence I provide, that hey, “I guess I was wrong about that”.

    Rant: semiconductors

  • Rant: I noticed someone had smashed the large front window of the Whitelaw market and 13th and T again.

  • Not so much a rant or revel as an idea or suggestion: Is there any sort of backing or precedent for a public courtesy campaign? Nothing draconian, no enforcement or anything, but an ad campaign urging people to not act dickishly (that is, no phone convos on the bus or metro, clean up after your dog, step to the right on the escalator, etc)?

  • red not red

  • PoP, now and forever in black and white.

  • Rant: Our lame daycare took like 3 weeks to even bring in a carpet company to give them a quote after a flood caused the daycare to be shut down by the city. How they could drag their feet for 3 weeks before getting started on the carpet replacement is mind boggling. I am just flabergasted.
