Your Afternoon Animal Fix

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

  • This might sound stalkerish, but was Riley a puppy back in the summer of 2008? I lived in Adams Morgan back then and saw this puppy all the time and have been obsessed with it every since. I want to get a Bernie (the long haired version) as soon as I have a big enough place.

    • Wait a minute, on closer inspection I see now that this one probably is the longer haired version, in which case I don’t think it’s the dog I was thinking of…

  • Nope, she’s a 10 month puppy brought to DC this past December 🙂

  • What kind of dog is Riley?

  • I see Riley in Meridian Hill Park all the time on Sundays. She appears to like taking little swims in the fountains.

  • She does visit there almost every Sunday! She’s Bernese Mountain puppy!

    • Well, that is the kind of dog I want. She has a cousin – the short haired version – somewhere else in Adams Morgan. Also an incredibly sweet beautiful dog.

  • Riley is beautiful!

  • How do you keep a Bernie in DC? We have two on the family farm in PA, and they love to run around – not at all like the Great Pyrenees we used to have, who wanted nothing more than to sit around the house on a cool tile surface. Solomon and Sheba would go crazy cooped up in an apartment!

(To clarify, I’m asking honestly – I would LOVE to be able to have a Bernie in the city, but I don’t know how it would work, and I’m interested to see how you’ve managed it.)

    • I have a Berner who is now 16 months old – it’s pretty easy living in the city because there are a fair amount of dog parks for them to run around in… I have a much harder time when I go to the burbs and there aren’t fenced in yards or dog parks! I don’t know how those people survive.

The hardest part about a Berner in DC is the summer… not fun for them (or any long haired dog… or person for that matter)

      • I’ve talked with people who have Berners and they say that they are major couch potatoes, so this is the first I’ve heard of them needing tons of running time. I mean, obviously they are a dog and they need plenty of exercise, but as I understood it, on the scale of active dogs, they were on the lower end. Maybe it was just their dog though.

  • Riley is the laziest puppy ever!! But, she does go to the dog park, one of many at least once a day…sometimes 2. As we speak I’m in the living room and she’s chilling on my bed. She doesn’t bark either. They make great apartment dogs! The short haired version you’re thinking of is a Swiss Mountain Dog…her cousin and also a great dog!
