Speedy Liquor Closes on 14th St in Columbia Heights Will Reopen on Park Rd, NW

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been getting some emails and tweets mentioning that Speedy Liquor was gonna close at the corner of 14th and Monroe St, NW. Well they’ve now closed at that location but for fans (apparently they have very good prices) the good news is that they plan on opening up around the corner on Park Rd, NW (near Pho 14).

In the meantime – where’s the most reasonably priced liquor store in the city?

  • I’ve never been to a reasonably priced liquor store in the city. Though sometimes various DC liquor stores will have sales that you never see in Maryland or Virginia.

  • The liquor store at the corner of Sherman and Harvard is surprisingly good.

    • That place is great. The lady is so funny.

      • I like their liquor prices but DO NOT have them change the batteries in your watches! They ruined 2 of mine. The price was so low I couldn’t resist but the old adage “You get what you pay for” was certainly true here.

  • The time is now for that unit to become a high-end sandwich/charcuterrie/wine shop in the vein of Cork Market. I challenged someone to open this.

  • Sale prices at Magruder’s and Calvert Woodley are cheaper than you’ll find ANYWHERE (including MD, VA, etc etc).

  • Montgomery County liquor store in Friendship Heights hands down.

  • Calvert Woodley is cheaper than anywhere around, especially the government stores in MoCo and VA.

  • I’ve had amazing luck at Metro Liquors in Adams Morgan. First time, I was shocked at their selection and prices, especially considering what it looks like from the outside.

I’ve never been particularly fond of Speedy, although the guy who runs CC’s across the street is wicked nice and helpful.

Yeah, I’m sure the right answer is Calvert Woodley though.

    • +1 for CC’s

That guy seems to actually understand the concept of customer service!

I love it when he tosses in an extra bottle of something just for being a good customer. And I’m a very good customer….

  • I lived near Calvert and used to go there for liquor until I realized that almost every bottle they had was cheaper at the Friendship Heights Montgomery County store.

Here’s a list of the Friendship Heights store’s current deals (normal prices are listed as well):

  • Odd that it is just moving around the corner, presumably for cheaper rent? They had a surprisingly nice liquor selection last time I went. I imagine they will be a bit spruced up, eliminating the bullet-proof glass. I think they should also change the name to something a bit more creative / attractive sounding, I bet the combo of the b.p. glass and the name scares off some potential customers.

And by the way, one area place that is NOT cheap, certainly, is Devinos. I almost never shop there, even though I want to support them, because the beer and wine are in most cases just priced way higher than I can get elsewhere.

    • When was the last time u were in there, I was not a supporter for a long time, now i go ther 3 times a week. But I can see where youre coming from, I was also not used to good selection, service and cleanliness either, so I thought it was expensive. My $7.99 Oberon is at Devinos.

  • Next to Hadees on Mt pleasant corner near the 7-11..not sure what that street is. best price and qty.

  • I like Plane Old Pearson’s – if you live in the neighborhood they give you a discount and they’ll order anything for you and offer delivery.
They also have great wine tastings throughout the week for free!

  • I’m kind of a fan of Petworth Liquor; the clerks are nice and remember you. I once witnessed a female clerk physically throw a drunken man who had stumbled in at 11 a.m. out the door. When he came roaring back in the other customers shamed him out with calls of “go back to rehab!”

  • Fairmont Liguors at Sherman ave and Fairmont street is THE cheapest hands down.

  • Good Ole Reliable near the intersection of Rhode Island and South Dakota NE. Good prices, weekly sales distributed via e-mail.

  • Gotta shout out Chat’s on Eighth Street SE — but only if you want the good stuff.

  • Shout out to Giant Liquor at Georgia and Park NW. Cheap 12-packs of canned beer and good people.
