Dear PoP – More Outdoor Seating For Upper 14th St, NW

“Dear PoP,

More outdoor seating on upper 14th. 14th and Perry Pl, NW to be exact. Great Mexican and Salvadorian cuisine, margaritas, and rumor has it that there’s karaoke every night upstairs.”

Great news. Back in Oct. ’08 Robyn wrote about her great experience at La Molienda (3568 14th Street, NW.) Any other fans out there?

  • la molienda is my steez. try the whole grilled fish and tamales! yum yum 😀

    dammit…now i have a craving!!!

  • I’ve sat at the bar a couple of times to watch soccer. The chicken burrito I ordered, unfortunately, was among the worst I’ve ever had. Sad to say it, because it seems to be a pleasant, clean, well-lit, well-run place.

  • Is there a cover or anything to get in? I was excited about El Centro on Cinco de Mayo, but there was $20 cover and I couldn’t pull that.

  • andy

Those places up there (La Molienda, Carolina, etc.) are so close to my house but I have never gone.

I always had the impression they were Central American-oriented late night club/bar/party spots and not laid-back soccer and salsa brunch places.

Is that totally wrong, or am I just judging these places based on stuff like the big “100% ID check,” “ID required,” “no agruparse,” or “don’t fight with the kids in the local group house” signs?

Always looking for a new place to stroller my kid to for a cerveza.

    • I would not put La Molienda and Carolina Kitchen in the same category. I think Carolina Kitchen is more of a club type place that you describe.

      • Agreed. La M. is a casual, friendly restaurant, Carolinas more of a disco. Thumbs up for upper 14th – it’s an authentic Latin commercial cooridor and DC’s best off-the-radar neighborhood. And Upshur Park was just renovated and LOOKS AWESOME. So in other words, don’t move here.

  • The food I had there when I went was mediocre at best and the service was so-so. My roommate who went one evening was eating there went some sort of drug bust went down. With other options like El Distrito and La Cabana nearby I don’t even bother going there.

  • El Districto Federal has lots of fans on PoP, but every time I go I am reminded that the food isn’t cooked onsite, but rather reheated and served from aluminum chafing dishes hidden under the counter.
