Best Vestibule in DC?

I saw this Columbia Heights vestibule when I was dropping off a t-shirt this weekend and it blew me away. You think these portraits are the original owners of the house? It’s by far the coolest vestibule I’ve ever seen in DC and I was going through some serious withdrawal so if anyone has a sweet vestibule or other cool feature in your home please send a photo to princeofpetworth(at)gmail

  • those portraits are cool as hell.

  • those are fantastic. I’d like to restore the vestibule in my Bloomingdale rowhouse. Anyone know of a contractor who can do this work?

    • I have some of that green tile in my basement. I had to take most of it down because replacements are hard to come by and there wasn’t enough to cover the wall.

  • andy

It’s Miracle Max and his wife!

    Humperdinck, Humperdinck, Humperdinck!

      • “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife. But after what you just said, I’m not even sure I want to be that anymore!”

        Best. Movie. Ever.

Also, if anyone is looking to completely re-do their entryway with similar-looking tile, I finally stumbled across Encore Ceramics’ Precocious collection in a magazine last month. They have a 1×3 brick mosaic collection that is the closest thing I have found to the style of tiles in the photos above. It’s not the same, and the vintage tiles are much better, but I think it might be the best I can do for a reasonable price without lucking out on actual old tiles.

  • Very cool. And she’s quite handsome.

  • I hate that tile. Always thought it looked like clown puke. Ick.

The portrait is kinda sweet, though.

  • architectural ceramics on Wisconsin avenue carries many lines of tiles that look like this. Don’t really see them on the website but they definitely do have some that are similar.

  • What a great vestibule! We’ve been working on ours for months. It’s amazing how such a small space can be so much work. I know the finished result will be great, but maybe we need to pick up a few of those portrait tiles to really make a statement. 😉

  • I found a whole bucket of that green mosaic tile at the old Brass Knob warehouse and was able to retile an entire mantel for peanuts. I will miss that place…

  • Seriously, I live in a 2002-era Bloomingdale ‘flip’ wherein the majority of the period architectural details were stripped out. Does anyone have a specific recommendation of a contractor that has restored a vestible from nearly or actually scratch? Preferably an owner who might have before/after tales or know-how?
