Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

Congrats to Green Bay Packers fans.

  • What is up with the latest buzz word – new normal? By definition it is an oxymoron. How can something that is new, i.e. different, be normal? Normal is something that is expected. If something is new, it is not expected!

  • Rave – After the gutting of my newly purchased columbia heights townhouse fell behind by months due to “general contractor uselessness”, and weeks and weeks of missed permit inspections by DCRA inspectors that delayed me by another 76 weeks that resulted in me having to make half a dozen trips down to their offices to scorch some earth, then to suffer through the unfortunately typical burglary and theft during construction, a minor by still damaging fire and then burst water pipes to top it all off, I can say that more progress has made in the past week than in total two months prior.

This is the last house I ever gut in the District. I gutted my last house in Arlington 8 years ago and it was nothing like this.

PS. I don’t care what DCRA “likes” to say, their entire organization is just fundamentally BROKEN and their entire inspection division should have to spend a week shadowing their counterparts in Ffx, Arlington or Mont Co.

  • Rant: Escalators on the George Ave Southbound entrance of the Metro. They’ve been out for months. How long does the repair take?

    • It seemed like at least one was operating, but as of this morning all three escalators were out.

Hopefully I wont get coke/soy sauce thrown on me by a group teenagers like the last time when all the Northbound escalators were out. Good times in Petworth!

    Rave: Funnel cake fries.
    Ick: TMI emails.

  • Rave: Small market teams like the Steelers and Packers.

Rant: owners like Fan Snyder who instead of building a winning program is suing the Washington City Paper.

  • Rave: Passed the one month mark with the new job and received a round of applause at this morning’s all staff meeting. Sadly, feeling appreciated is a somewhat new feeling, but I think I can get used to it!

Rave: Sunshine and warmer air. Spring is around the corner!

Rant: Started feeling under the weather on Friday, felt somewhat better over the weekend, and now my nose is running like a leaky faucet again. I’m planning to OD on vitamin C for the next week. No time to be sick!

    • Sorry Cait B… snow is around the corner (thursday). But I’m sure the spring will be right behind it! 🙂

      • Rant: Haven’t you heard? This one is going to miss us too. We’re never getting snow this year. Damn snow bubble.

      • I’m keeping the faith that balmy breezes, sunshine-y late afternoons and daffodils are close at hand!

In other news of keeping faith..

Rave: I accidentally left my iPhone in my car Friday afternoon and didn’t realize it until Sunday evening. It hung out in plain view all weekend and was still there when I went to grab it! I’m not sure if I’m just lucky or if I should have a little more faith in my neighbors – either way, something to rave about.

  • Rant: My Steelers Lost:(
    Rave: I Love My Steelers!

  • Rave: Will be in Vegas in 3 days for 3 days of lots and lots of rugby watching, and partying, and seeing old friends from all over. I love this sport (even though it’s 7s…)

Rant: I need to do about 5 loads of laundry before I go…

  • Rave: Wive and I started demoing our upstairs bathroom!

Rant: Nasty metal lathe with 2″ of plaster. It looks like we have 3-4″ of thinset/concrete under the tile floors. That’s going to be a lot of dust and a lot of trips to the dump.

Rave2: Awesome Saturday morning at Biergarten House with 30 friends watching France v. Scotland.

  • Rant: I keep getting error messages telling me I’m posting comments too quickly. I’m not sure how I could do it any more slowly. Something’s definitely broken.

Rant: The moderating of comments is annoying when we want instant gratification.

    Rave: Spring begins next month!

  • RANT: people who think that dog crap melts with the snow. CURB YOUR DOG YOU A**HOLES.

RAVE: that i will be able to get out into my garden earlier this year (i am hopeful)

  • Rave: Had a great time at the Auto Show.

Rant: Can’t afford a thing at the Auto Show.

  • Rant: rents are too damn high DC. how does it work that they’re still high and rising when no one in the fed’s getting raises. the sequel to this blog should be called the Price of Petworth

Rave: would rather rent than be a stuck overburdened homeowner who can’t even go out to eat

Rant: hard times when i’m alone.

Rave: i’ve got it a whole lot better here than there. love my work. love my family.

  • Rave: Gorgeous warm sunny Sunday afternoon on Beach Drive -lots of people – groups of friends & family out walking together – kids running around, kids on bikes, kids on trikes, kids on skates. Dogs, old people with walkers out enjoying an ice-free walk.

Rant: Idiot cyclists who felt they could still tear through them all at high speed.

Rave: After almost two years of house-hunting (and far too many years of living in the suburbs in order to save money for said house), we put an offer on a house in DC.

Rant: There’s already two other offers on the table. Fingers crossed…

  • Rave: My son turned 2 months on Friday! He is getting so big and so much more interactive.

Rant: Stupid drunk guy decides my house is his house and attempts to open the front door at 4AM on Saturday Morning. Missed his house by about 5 blocks!

Rave: Cops came within 3 minutes of the 911 call and then even were nice enough to drive the young man to his house.

  • Why is that a rant? You weren’t hurt, your property wasn’t damaged, and it makes for a pretty hilarious story to share at your next dinner party.
