You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this week?

  • Scuttlebutt: I heard activity from within the Bacon Funeral Home monstrosity this morning. Oh, please let it mean progress! Failing that, let it mean squatters, who will eventually burn the thing down. (I know, I know… a mountain of cinderblock doesn’t burn well. Probably as likely a scenario as seeing it finished and un-ugly.)

Rant: Am I crazy, or did the mailbox at 14th and Meridian just DISAPPEAR??

  • Rave: that picture is amazing. Teach me how to dougie!

Rave: Kids at DC9 tomorrow night… “A night of old-school hip-hop with free malt liquor, free condoms and free admission.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/bar-club-events/kids,1154633.html?wpisrc=nl_gogmon

Rant: Moved to DC from Milwaukee a year ago and missed both Snowmaggedons last year, and now missed the Blizzaster. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Rave: Finalist on the Capital Bikeshare Favorite Photo Contest.
Rave: If you want to help me win, “like” Capital Bikeshare on FB first and then “like” my photo: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=185408728159123&set=a.185408688159127.43255.134700293229967

  • Rant: Dating sucks in this city. Guys only have one thing on their mind, and they all seem arrogant, across the board. Guys who work on the Hill are the worst. It’s like they expect everyone to be their bitch or something. Everything is on their schedule, they think they’re smarter than you. It sucks 🙁 Where are all the gentlemen?

And btw, I’m not just looking at guys on the hill or the like. I”m pretty open to anyone really, and it’s been the same result in all instances.

    • Date a different demographic if you’re unhappy with the demographic you’re dating. COPYWRITE!

Seems glib, but I’m serious. Data older, younger, less career oriented, different careers.

Just for reference, it is all about your own needs until you decide to open up to someone. Don’t go being someone’s doormat until you’ve figured out that they’re worth it.

    • The gentlemen live in the suburbs. 😉

    • would you like to date me. how about drinks.

    • You know–people say this all the time but I suspect single people in every city say the same thing. I think it’s just hard to find someone you’d be happy with period. If it was easy or just anyone fit the bill, I’m convinced finding that person wouldn’t be nearly as fulfilling.

      • +1. There’s also no decent men in any town. I have family members who consistently make the same poor dating decisions and yet expect prince charming to show up.

There’s no one formula, but if what you’re doing isn’t working, try something else. Sometimes just breathing and taking it easy /in/ the beginning of the relationship is all you really need.

      • Where do people go to find potential dates? Usually either bars, clubs, or online. I think this is the problem. While you can find plenty of decent people in any of these pools, there are also a lot of scumbags. If you don’t get together with your high school or college sweetheart, you usually find “the one” when you’re not even looking. I think the best strategy is to make a lot of friends/acquantences and hope one of them introduces you to someone great!

        • I met a great guy while stuck in an airport overnight once – maybe you should fly to el paso . . .

        • If you’re wedded to a particular philosophy, understand that the person of your dreams may be wedded to another philosophy.

My wife and I met online because we were both busy working professionals. Our circles would have never crossed, because we have no mutual friends (FB proved that), but we were very compatible.

There are just as many scumbags in your circle of friends as there are online, in bars and clubs.

        • Listen to anon @ 2:35. I befriended my gay neighbor in my Columbia Heights apt building and after hanging out for the better part of a year he set me up with a girl he used to work with who he thought I might get along with. Was he ever right! 2.5 years later the girl and I are living together in NE and having a wonderful time. Thanks, KD!

  • Rant: currently suck in el paso. Been at the airport for almost 5 hours, still 2 more to go before I can board my flight. Original flight was canceled. Power is out/everything is running on generators except for agent computer systems to rebook flights at the gate. Thus, I had to go out to the ticket counter to find an airline that is flying out of this place, only to go back through security (ps got body-scanned twice in 3 hrs…whoohoo) and I’m still here.

AND, there have been rolling blackouts here all week. The weather in El Paso has been between 8 to 18 degrees. Get me outta here!

  • Rant: I broke up with my girlfriend after being together for 1.5 years because we both wanted to meet other people before things got more serious. I don’t want anyone else in my life, I can’t stop thinking about her, I don’t want to lose the love I have for her, and I think I want her in my life together.

    • Too late! She’s mine now and I’ve only got one thing on my mind. 😉 Go get her back dude…

    • Breath deeply, exercise and eat healthy, and wait for the panic to subside. Then think about what made you decide to take a break in the first place. Was it her, fear, or something else.

Don’t rush in. Time’s actually a lot slower than you think.

    • I’m glad you see this now… very nice

      Sadly men are so fickle…

all ALL ALL of my ex’s come back to me… in fact, ARE YOU MY EX?!!

It is SO ANNOYING, why can’t they love the one they’re with –when they’re with me! So GAMEY!

I just don’t know what to do with you. Of course, there are a gazillion other lovelies to date, just figure it out already. There always are, there always will be, there always were… but what do you WANT???!!

  • Rant: Just saw a nicely executed smash and grab in Petworth. Don’t leave stuff in your cars people! (double rant – the victim was in church and didn’t even know about the heist going down outside!)

Rave: Kids in Petworth are bold and outstanding thieves, even in broad daylight.

    • That’s a rave?

      • If you can’t beat em, join em. Trying my best to embrace DC’s longstanding “Hug-a-Thug” policy. The kids need lots of thug practice so they can win the toughest thug in DC competition. SE and NE have got NW beat out big time.

  • RANT: Bank robbery on MT P street (not the BoA, but one of the wire transfer places across the street). Perps had bullet-proof vests on – mean business.

    RAVE: Friday!

  • Rant: Fucking appliances in brand new condo keep breaking down.

Rave: UFC 126, Superbowl and another date with a cute girl.

    • You own them now. Sell them on Craigslist and get something reliable.

They’ll never be worth more in trade in than they are now.

  • Rant: Noticed my cable bill sharply increased. Looked at the detail and a houseguest of my tenant had charged several Pay-per-view movies to my account while I was out of town. I hope you enjoyed watching “His First Gay Sex” and “Punk” on Christmas eve, Kyle. Classy!

    Rave: It’s Friday!

  • Rant: Furloughs for DC Government employees. I was told I was safe from them as I work in public safety. Today that all changed. So now I am out X number of dollars a year and twice that really as I would have worked all four holidays.

So much for being an essential employee.

    • Sorry, but welcome to the brave new world.

Hopefully you can pickup the slack with some consulting work.

    • Emmaleigh504

I’m sorry to hear that. I think furloughs are shitty. Why don’t they just raise taxes? Before I get flamed, I just want to say I appreciate what the gov does for me (schools, roads, libraries, police, firemen, etc) and I don’t mind paying my share for it. Sure, they do some things I don’t agree with, but I don’t think the good stuff should suffer because of it.

      • Don’t kid yourself, you don’t come anywhere near paying for your share honey. None of us do. It’s a structural deficit based on budgeting for high times instead of the low times.

    • I am expected in when there is a blizzard and everyone else gets the day off. I have my days off changed and am forced to work the All Hand on Deck weekends. But I am not valued enough to be allowed to work holidays.

They can’t continue to have it both ways. The sad thing is reponse times will continue to increase as I work harder than most of my sworn counterparts and it will be citizens to suffer.

  • rave – weekend full of shenanigans.
rant – women. what the hell.

  • RAVE: Watching the PR nightmare that is Dan Snyder.

RAVE: Encountering a friendly, qualified, professional bus driver Wednesday night on the 42 bus to Mt. Pleasant.

RANT: Feeling unsafe in the city you live in.

RANT: At least its not Cairo or Tahrir Square

  • Emmaleigh504

Rave: DC Circulator bus drivers are always nice.
    Rave: Cute next door neighbor.
Rant: Never see cute next door neighbor.
Rave: Cute across the hall and over 1 neighbor.
Rave: See cute across the hall and over 1 neighbor almost weekly.

  • Rave: Noon, Saturday. Biergarten House. Six Nations Rugby. Free.

Rant: Wife thinks driving to Mt Airy at rush hour tonight to go wine tasting is a good idea. I have to be supportive.

  • Big Rant: Had a taste for Chinese food and went to Shanghai Garden in the 4400 block of Conn Avenue only to find it closed up. I’ve been eating there for almost 40 years. A great little family place that is no more. Damn!
