Metro Considering Weekend Closure at Midnight to Make time for Track Repairs

Judging Restaurants – Byblos Deli

Byblos Deli is located at 3414 Connecticut Ave NW in Cleveland Park. I’ll be honest when I was eager for a gyro I’d just hit the now closed Yanni’s up the block. But the time has come to search for another delicious gyro in this neck of the woods. I’ve learned downtown Greek Deli is the way to go. But what’s the word on the gyros at Byblos? Any other good items to try out? You can see their menu here.

They have been there a long time. It used to be my go to spot for Falafel at a time when there were few vegetarian or falafel options in dc.

  • g

best greek food in dc, easily.

    • Rukasu

That’s a mighty claim, I thought their spanikopita was average, and not unlike the frozen kind I get at Trader Joe’s.

  • fatty

I like this place a lot but their Gyro is just so-so. You’re better off ordering something else IMO. Their shawarma is great

  • Chris

Def one of my go to spots for falafel and gyros! Have been going there for years. Another place I like that stays open late is DC Cafe on P Street in dupont. Awesome falafel and gyros as well.

  • Former Rowhouse Condo Dweller

In season, they have tasty gazpacho.

  • Former Rowhouse Condo Dweller

And its a good place to fill up before waiting in line at the Uptown.

    • OTBerbur

I’ve found Byblos OK for getting a quick bite before or after a movie at the Uptown. Otherwise, the food isn’t good enough to be worth a trip.

  • Emil

Step across the street to Fresh Med. I go there…it just seems cleaner and they have a better, brighter space. I went here once and just didn’t like the vibe.

  • Wong Tong

hard a hard time getting over the “grit” factor.

does anyone know if Kellari is decent Greek?

  • ptown

The Greek Spot on 11th is awesome!

  • CParkette

Unless you particularly like smelling of grease, I’d skip this place. I’ll second the recommendation to go across the street to Fresh Med – they have some of the yummiest sandwiches and hummus in the city.

“But the time has come to search for another delicious gyro in this neck of the woods.”

I’d put the effort into trying to figure out how to avoid ever having to be in Cleveland Park.

    • Anonymous

Are you really that much of a hipster?

      • Anonymous

why must someone be a hipster to say that?

        • Anonymous

Because normal people just ignore neighborhoods they have no interest in. Only a hipster would tout his neighborhood cred by saying he plans out ways to avoid a neighborhood that is not dangerous.

          • Conoisseur

            +1 Anonymous 4:49 score!

This place DOES have good gyros, reliably, with good tzaztizizki (spelling?). Dependable. Well-established.

STILL AFFORDABLE!! That says a lot for CP. Plus it’s NOT a tanning or nail salon.

To the person who compared the spanikopita… Agree –the Trader Joe’s spanikopita (triangular ones, not square ones) is EXCELLENT — but honestly, I don’t think you should compare it to others. It stands alone.

          • Anonymous

people’s baggage and rationalization trying to judge others never ceases to amaze me.
            that was impressive.

    • Anonymous

It’s not Bloomingdale, but Cleveland Park has its charms.

  • Anonymous

yeah, dude – what do you have against cleveland park – is it too normal for you?

  • Anonymous

Yes, I don’t want to go over there for fear of getting beat up for wearing skinny jeans and listening to Wolf Parade. It has nothing to do with the fact that there is nothing there but shitty, overpriced restaurants.

If you live or work there it’s one thing, that’s your own bad decision, but otherwise, why would you go over there? It’s not like it’s a hub for specialty retail you can’t find elsewhere in the city, or that there’s good nightlife or something.

    • Anonymous

Are you serious? I hesitate to name names, because then insufferable douches like yourself might start going there, but Nanny O’Brien’s and Atomic Billiards are both awesome for nightlife. CPBG has an epic roof deck in the summer, Nam-Viet is delicious and dirt cheap, as are Alero, Byblos, and that thai place. Dino and Indique are amazing if you haven’t spent all your money on rare colored 45s of bands I am not cool enough to know about. It has the best goddamn movie theater in the entire city, and is bus and metro accessible. Housing prices may be outrageous, but the area rocks.

      • Anonymous

+1. Mr. Girljeans should probably stick to his “edgy” neighborhood because nothing in CP is ever going to be good enough.

        • Anonymous

Oh right, I forgot, if you haven’t been mugged three times in a year, your neighborhood is SO uncool. I wouldn’t even consider living in a neighborhood until it has had at least 5 murders in a year. How else will I impress my friends back in Kansas with my tales of the big bad city?

          • Anonymous

I love how whenever somebody criticizes a neighborhood everybody immediately reads “my neighborhood is better because it’s grittier”.

      • Anonymous

“I hesitate to name names, because then insufferable douches like yourself might start going there”

You really, really have nothing to worry about. Besides, what was I going to do, go to all the other places in CP instead?

        “Nanny O’Brien’s”

If you think an Irish pub makes a place a destination for nightlife I’ve got this great neighborhood you should check out, it’s called every city in the US.

        “Atomic Billiards”

It’s a pool place with beer. I’m glad there’s one there for people who live there but if you live in another neighborhood you’d probably pass a similar one on the way.

        “CPBG”

It’s a sports bar with terrible food. Any points that could have been awarded here are negated by your use of “epic” to describe a roof deck, bro.

        “Nam-Viet”

This place did hold it down as the only Vietnamese in DC for a long time. I will give you this one out of nostalgia, but again, what direction are you coming to CP from that you don’t pass another Vietnamese place?

        “Alero”

        You’re kidding, right?

        “Byblos”

        See above re: Atomic Billiards.

        “Dino and Indique are amazing”

        No, they’re average.

“the best goddamn movie theater in the entire city”

OK you are definitely kidding. It’s an AMC franchise. That’s like saying the Chili’s in your town is the best in the US. A movie theater is a movie theater unless it’s going to cater to the specialty/indie crowd like E street, West End, or AFI.

Sorry dude, I’m not saying it’s unlivable, just that there’s no compelling reason to go there.

        • Eckington Resident

Where do you live thats so awesome? I like Cleveland Park and I dont have to live there to say that.

          • El Gringo

Clevland Park is a nice place to live.

Once upon a time, there were very few comparable options (walkable city living without being a millionaire or a gun owner)

…but that was about 10 yrs ago now. It’s not that CP started to suck, it’s just that many other parts of the city have gotten their act together

          • Anonymous

            El Gringo:

You know how I can tell you’ve been in DC a long time?

You’ve had to be a millionaire to live in CP for well over 10 years now. I make the same mistake too, thinking back to when houses in NW were affordable and thinking it was not that long ago. Then I realized the last time you could buy a house in Upper NW without making 6 figures minimum was the early 90s.

        • Wong Tong

DC is finally living up aspiration of “being like NYC.” Enough with the the hyper-neighborhood comparisons, pseudo-branding, and cool kids animosity. If you wanted to, you could shred any neighborhood in this city; none are perfect, each is just different. It’s pointless regression to adopt your line of thinking to the point that nobody but the kids commuting in from Poletown East in Detroit have any street cred. Still, Cleveland Park’s a far cry from Arlington.

          • Anonymous

No. Neighborhood on neighborhood bickering is the white people’s version of gangs. We will never give it up.

        • Anonymous

[If you think an Irish pub makes a place a destination for nightlife I’ve got this great neighborhood you should check out, it’s called every city in the US.]

“If you think a place where you pay money in exchange for drinks makes a destination for nightlife, I’ve got this great place you should check out, it’s called every bar in the US.”

Break it down like you did and you can say a similar thing about every establishment in the world. Right, every irish bar is the same, just like every music venue is the same, and every baseball stadium is the same. What makes places different is the crowd, staff, and atmosphere and both of those are excellent at Nanny’s, unless of course you hate friendly people and good conversation.

[It’s a sports bar with terrible food. Any points that could have been awarded here are negated by your use of “epic” to describe a roof deck, bro.]

I happen to think the food there is fine, and apparently many people agree, seeing as it is busy most nights of the week. And way to attack my choice of adjectives. When you have no more straws to grasp at, go for vocabulary, works every time.

[OK you are definitely kidding. It’s an AMC franchise. That’s like saying the Chili’s in your town is the best in the US. A movie theater is a movie theater unless it’s going to cater to the specialty/indie crowd like E street, West End, or AFI.]

The Uptown was an independent theater for a whole lot longer than it has been an AMC. Nothing changed when it was sold either. Every theater shows the same movies whether it is an AMC or Lowes or Magic Johnson. What makes the uptown awesome is the theater itself. How many other AMCs have screens that big or balconies? Sorry it doesn’t play French silent films shot backwards on super 8 film. It’s kind of hard to keep a one screen theater open playing art house flicks.

[Sorry dude, I’m not saying it’s unlivable, just that there’s no compelling reason to go there.]

You said you would put effort into figuring out how not to go there. That would be a valid comment if this was Barry Farms. Backtracking and changing your words won’t change anything

  • Anonymous

    (addendum to above)

Also, all of this is on 1 block! Seriously, I challenge you to name another 1 block area that has more awesome stuff than Cleveland Park. No, it’s not my favorite neighborhood of all time, but there’s no way to justify the hate you gave it.

  • Anon

4P’s and the Uptown. What more do you need to justify liking Cleveland Park?

    • Anonymous

Is 4ps any good? I’ve always been a loyal Nanny’s customer, and the only experience I ever had with 4ps was getting kicked out when drinkin’ hours began when I was like 12.

  • John

I think the CP hater is little more than a jealous troll. I don’t live there either. I live in MTP. A neighborhood the hipster guy probably loves. In MTP I have no pool hall. No Vaces. No theater. No melt-in-your-mouth Palena burger. No Irish dives. no organic market. And soon CP is adding what sounds like an awesome steakhouse and TackleBox. Sure I like MTP for other reasons. It’s more diverse and has more character. Soon it will have a library that blows CP’s away too. But that doesn’t mean I can’t admit that the CP retail strip really packs in a lot of great stuff given it’s size. I’d kill to have any of the things I mentioned in MTP. Til then I consider myself lucky that CP is a short hop across the park.

  • Anonymous

Sorry guys, but I’m not a hipster. I wear regular jeans, have an uncool job, and listen to uncool music. That, however, does not change the fact that CP is full of shitty, overpriced restaurants, as stated above. I’m sorry if you think I’m a snob for saying that all Irish pubs and movie theaters are pretty much the same, I didn’t realize those were controversial opinions.

Mt P guy, I hate to burst your bubble but if a steakhouse and another location of a kitschy, overpriced seafood place in G-town are upgrades to a neighborhood that kind of proves my point. Shoot pool at Bedrock and get pizza at Petes and you will be just as happy, I promise.

Also, I used to be a loyal Vace customer but I got tired of them screwing up the order and being jerks about it.

    • Anonymous

Just out of curiosity, what neighborhood do you live in?

      • Anonymous

Not telling. I’ll give you a hint though, it has a real grocery store and has never had a cereal restaurant.

        • Anonymous

You just HAD to bring up the cereal restaurant, didn’t you. God I hope that place burns down.

        • Anon

Oh god, you must mean you live in Columbia Heights. How is that wasteland superior to Cleveland Park?

          • Anonymous

To be fair, having a real supermarket and no cereal restaurant pretty much includes everything west of 15th St NE that isn’t on the other side of the Anacostia.

          • El Gringo

Alright their Anon-Troll. No need to step on the 20010 like that.

“Wasteland” implies vast areas with nothing of value.

While we may have a spirited debate about the relative value of The Heights vs. El Rinconcito Deportivo, it cannot be debated that the very ability to have that debate means that, by definition, CH is no wasteland…cultural or otherwise.

          • Anon

Yeah yeah yeah, its not. I was just trying to smoke the hater out of his hole. I just played the odds that he was from Columbia Heights (I bet he is).

          • Anonymous

Nah, $50 says he’s from Reston and either is playing us all for suckas or is compensating for his neighborhood insecurities..

          • El Gringo

Dirty secret – I suspect that CH is now the Williamsburg Brklyn of DC. ;)

I don’t think most hipsters actually live in CH anymore…just former hipsters. I think the new batch has to live north of Spring Rd or East of Sherman Ave now to afford the rents…CH is just the closest metros for some of them still :)

          • Anonymous

What about H St? I thought that was the new hipster mecca. And in regards to CH, we should give beaverskin hats to the El Salvadoreans and it would really look like Billyburg, complete with old neighborhood vs. new neighborhood animosity.

        • Conoisseur

I am loving how this person won’t say where they’re from while their ripping CP.

          It’s so lacking integrity.

He’s said it without saying it — such a loser!

  • Anonymous

i’m quite amused that in such a small city, there are viable commercial areas that people simply write off, as if they have no redeeming qualities and should be avoided. and if you really do feel that way, why bother spreading your shitty outlook. it’s like pissing on the rug.

  • Anonymous

i’ve been there many times. i bought stuff. i survived. someday i may go back there. what’s your point?

  • Anonymous

Damn, quitting time already. I’d like to thank everyone in this thread who gave meaning and entertainment to my boring day. No hard feelings Cleveland Park detractor?

  • I love their food.

Sandwiches and the sampler platter are my favorites.

  • dsel

I think the CP hater lives in Van Ness. Hard to compete with a Giant, CVS, 7-Eleven, Potbelly and three different banks’ ATMs. Kick ass.
