You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

  • I love the new Argo… better than ever. I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to eat outside again.

  • looks like they are finally tearing down the pawn shop and Chinese place at Lamont and Georgia!

  • Rant: My girlfriend broke up with me this weekend via text message.

Rave: No longer being in a relationship with an immature girl who would be tacky enough to end a relationship with a text.

  • Totally agree about the new Argonaut. We watched a game there yesterday and were very impressed by the new space, drink selection, and food.

  • Rant: I broke a light fixture in my condo and grad school is kicking my ass.

Rave: Going on a first date tomorrow with a cute girl.

Can anyone suggest some good restauraunts in arlington for a first date.

  • Wish we could post that sign for all the anti-gentrifiers to see!

    • Isn’t calling someone a ‘gentrifier’ rooted in undereducated rudeness?

Sounds like you needed better adult supervision growing up.

  • Rave: I spent the entire day Sunday in my PJs and didn’t even go outside. My big event of the day was brunch at home (homemade eggs benedict) followed by a nap. Wake me up when spring is here!

    • I spent the whole day at home too, but I went out quite a bit to tend to my smoker. Had excellent pulled pork during the playoff games.

  • rave: squirrels (originally thought they were raccoons) infiltrated the 16 inch high duct/insulation crawl space above my apartment somehow. my landlord has been great. cut a whole in the ceiling, trapped one of them. really responsive. great building.

rave: cold, cold bike ride in this morning. looking forward to heading up the hill after sitting at this desk all day.

Rant: Went out on Sat. night to take photos of the Moonrise from the Lincoln Memorial. It was freezing! I was late, almost fell off my bike twice, there were fences all around the place, and believe it or not, like 1000 people walking around, playing and running in front of the camera and I think that affected the quality of my pictures.
One of the girls (while walking up the stairs) said: “I want to go see Mr. Washington!!”.

  • “I’ve got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old. I’m gonna teach them first of all about values and morals. But, if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”

“Well, you know, I think that whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, uh, answering that question with specificity, uh, you know is, is, uh, above my pay grade.”

We all know who said this publicly.

There is no humor on this subject. It’s no joke.

I find it refreshing now in 2011, at a time when the value of collective life is held so high, to find that on this 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade there are still those that find value in individual human life as well, who take a stand, and with somber pause reflect on those innocents (who now number in the millions) snuffed and aborted who never knew the splendor of love and life as we have.

    — JUST A THOUGHT on how in 2011 we seem to value collective life so highly and yet see individual human life, whether at the beginning of life or at its end, quite cheap and expendable:

“We are going to have to, if you’re very old, we’re not going to give you all that technology and all those drugs for the last couple of years of your life to keep you maybe going for another couple of months. It’s too expensive, so we’re going to let you die.” -Robert Reich.

    • On this cold cold day, on the 24th Day of January in the year 2011, I take comfort in knowing that you’ll pack up and head back to wherever you came from within a few days.

When I reflect on this day in a few months, remembering how cold it is, I’ll likely not even remember that you and your friends were here. Like a fart in the wind, so is your impact on our lives.

    • You have a dozen words from Robert Reich, but they can’t compare to the life’s work he has given to helping the poor of America.

He has helped others to live.

by the way there was a beginning part of the quote you cited…
“[W]hat I’m going to do is I am going to try to reorganize [the American health care system] to be more amenable to treating sick people. But that means you –“

  • Rant: Cut a chunk out of my finger with a mandoline yesterday.
Rant: Low tire pressure light came on while driving to work this morning – probably need to have a tire plugged and no idea when I’ll be able to take it in.
Rant: Traffic getting to work this morning because of the New Hampshire Ave closing (I commute from DC to MD so I usually have a gloriously low traffic commute).
Rant: Working on my birthday with no recognition from coworkers.
    Rave: ?

  • Rave: Bill 18-0344, the “Access to Juvenile Records Amendment Act of 2010”, should become law on March 15, 2011!

  • Happy Birthday!

  • Bear

    Rave: Lovely, lovely date yesterday.

Rant: Still not sure what’s happening with my job since my boss is leaving.

Rave: Excited about the new guy so I really couldn’t care less about work right now.

  • Rant: ignorant, short-sighted, anti-choice a*holes.

Rave: your numbers in the world are decreasing.

    • Rave: what you said, steve!

    • Rant: people who automatically consider anyone with a different opinion ignorant, short-sighted a*holes.

Rave: Figuring out a way to keep a good, thriving relationship with family members who differ drastically with me on many issues. (And that they will all go home tomorrow!)

  • whoops, that was aimed at Anonymous from 12:42

Rant: Plastic wrapped the front windows of the house only to have the adhesive fail because of the cold and the plastic become ineffective.

Rave: Finally made a fire in the fireplace. Didn’t burn the house down. Nice and toasty in the living room all afternoon and evening.

    Rant: Anti-choicers.

Rave: Guaranteed less crazy week at work as compared to last week.

Rant: Uber muscle tension in upper back, arms, and neck causing headaches and pain.

Rave: I guess I need a professional massage. Darn.

  • rant: colleague disappeared when scheduled to work alongside me

rave: mustered courage to address it with her

rave: bossman offered to mediate a conversation between the two of us if necessary, but i think i got it handled

    rave: quiet at work again

rant: tons of work to do

    rave: a break with PoP

    rave: met awesome man

  • Rave: Table saw Bearings and Motor Came in. I can start trimming out my windows so my house doesn’t look like a crack house anymore. New tiled foyer is holding up well so far with the extreme cold.

Rant: The DC city council is trying to siphon money from dedicated funding projects to pay into the general fund. Everything sold to residents as a fee to support a progressive cause is subject to being a fee to support the status quo. You can’t keep looking back and expect to move forward.

  • me

Rant: A huge toothache that hurt yesterday, kept me up all last night, and still hurts today. And I’m at work with a heating pad on my face. I can’t get an appointment with my dentist until tomorrow evening.

Rant: Going to the cardiologist with my husband today to find out if he needs a valve replacement or not.

Rave: At least I’ve lost a couple of pounds due to the stress and also because I can’t eat- this tooth is seriously killing me!
