Another New Clothing Store, Black-Eyed Susie’s, Coming to 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights

Wow, the retail scene on the 3400 block of 14th St, NW is off to a great start this year. On Monday we learned that It’s Vintage Darling had just opened up at 3423 14th Street NW and on Thursday Black-Eyed Susie’s will be opening up at 3443 14th St, NW (by Meridian Pl) in the former Cindy’s Bridal space.  I was able to take a sneak peek and chat with owner Susie Saadian.

Susie is a Columbia Heights resident and some may recognize her (photo below) as a spinning teacher at the nearby Washington Sports Club.  After looking at some spaces in Mt. Pleasant a student mentioned that Cindy’s Bridal space had become vacant and the fit was perfect.  While the space is small at around 700 square feet, Susie has packed it with clothing and accessories (25% men’s).

According to her Web site:

“Black-Eyed Susie’s is DC’s newest new, used, and artisan clothing and accessory retailer.

Located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood, Black-Eyed Susie’s provides the community with affordable, gently used clothing and accessories for men and women. Black-Eyed Susie’s will provide an opportunity for individuals to buy and sell wearable, in-fashion and current with the trend clothing and accessories.”

Another neat feature is that the shop can also sell your clothes:

“We are most interested in women and men’s clothing and accessories that can be described as contemporary or business casual. Accessories that Black-Eyed Susie’s accepts are shoes, purses and bags, hats, belts, jewelry, scarves, gloves.

You receive 40% of the retail price.”

The average price in the shop is $15-$30 but I even saw one t-shirt going for $4. They’ll be having a grand opening on Thurs. from 11am – 9pm and there’ll even be some drinks to celebrate.

I’ll say it again, things are def. looking up for the 3400 Block of 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights.

Lots more photos after the jump.

  • As if we need another cramped and hard to find anything 3 for 12 on the block but I’ll check it out any way congrats

  • Congrats, Susie !

Welcome, and the best of good luck.

  • Glad to see that spot filled with something useful (particularly for those living in the Allegro). Looks great!

  • Susie is great. Looking forward to checking out the shop. Looks like she’s done a great job with the space.

  • I like the store down the street better “It’s Vintage Darling”. Sorry Susie. You will have a lot of competition.

    • Next time you should just take out an ad for your store instead of using a post about a competitor to promote yourself and badmouth the competitor.

  • Oh yeah? You like it better than a place that hasn’t opened yet? Sounds objective…

  • Another missed opportunity for mt p 🙁

  • this is going to be such a great addition to DC, Susie is a good friend of mine and I can’t wait to see this place up and running!!!!!

  • Love it. I loathe shopping, in large part because I hate traveling to shopping, and then schlepping purchases home. I’m very happy to have something around the corner. I’ll definitely be checking it out this weekend.

  • Susie is the best! The store looks great — can’t wait to check it out. I am sure it will be a terrific addition to the neighborhood.

  • Emmaleigh504

Love that fur trimmed sweater/jacket thing!

  • Congrats Susie! Can’t wait to stop by.

  • This is really exciting! Having two similar stores close to one another is a huge draw. Vintage/thrift shopping can be a numbers game so two stores in proximity to one another ups the appeal as a destination and odds of finding something good.

  • Hmmmm. I see truth in advertising problems. Based on the photos above, Susie does not appear to have even one black eye.

  • Congrats Susie! I’ll stop by the opening to say hi and wish you luck! Opening a shop is no small feat!

Also–why are people in this comment thread so whiny/nasty? Why is it so hard to just say, “Hooray for independent businesses in our neighborhood!”

Usually the ones who criticize the most are the types who aren’t pursuing their own dreams or doing much with their own lives.

  • Looks great! Happy to have two great new stores on that rapidly improving stretch of 14th. And I hope that Dave’s Tavern gets back on track at some point, as well.

Now if that cinder block abomination nearby could just turn into something useful …

  • I have been looking for a place to sell some items at that wasn’t on consignment. I will be checking this out soon!

  • Congrats! Will definitely check out. 🙂

  • Yay!! I loved visiting It’s Vintage Darling last week, and I’m excited for this spot to open up as well, and so close to home! Although I find it funny that someone said it will be good for the people who live at the Allegro… I doubt anyone who spends over 2 grand for a 1 bedroom apt shops at thrift stores! But maybe I’m wrong, perhaps spending that much means you can ONLY shop at thrift stores!

  • I definitely agree, the more thriving businesses there are in the area the better for all the business owners and the community. Its Vintage Darling and Black-Eyed Susie’s can prosper together, each from the presence of the other. “Hey, let’s go down to 14th and Meridian and check out the shops <<<< note the 's'.

  • Susie, it’s been a long time but I am soo very proud of you. You are living our dream and I wish nothing but the best for you. To everyone reading…the space is amazing…Susie is awesome and there are great finds. Does 3 for 10 have Burberry… I think not! Stop by and see for yourself.

  • I just love this store! Its warm, friendly, fun and quirky! It fits right in to all the other wonderful businesses that make me so happy to live in Columbia Heights.

And I would like to join the chorus of people against all the haters. What is your problem? Honestly, all the negativity that seems to be coming from the “Its Vintage Darling” corner has completely turned me off from going into that store. When did the cast of Mean Girls move to our nice neighborhood?

  • I visited both Black-Eyed Susie’s and It’s Vintage Darling last weekend. I found great pieces at both locations. Glad to have new businesses such as these in the neighborhood!

  • Great place with an impressive mens selection considering the size and space dedicated to men. Susie is one of the most genuinely friendly people I have met. Definitely worth a visit.
