Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this week?

  • Does anyone know the store hours for the Museum of Unnatural History on CH Plaza? It doesn’t appear to be open at communitin’ time, when I walk home from metro. But I want to stop in and buy some presents for my strange nephews. Didn’t find the info on their website.

    • I wish the museums around here would extend their gift shop hours during the holidays. I’d like to do my Christmas shopping there but my weekends are always packed and they close too early on the weekdays.

  • One of my annual random rants this time of the year are the ads on tv (also sometimes in the paper) that include the following holiday greeting:
“To you and your’s from us and our’s” or something like that. My what? Their what? What on earth are they talking about?

  • RAVE – How I witnessed a driver deal with another driver’s road rage yesterday. “Calm Driver” did not pull up to a red light close enough to “Road Rage” driver’s liking, and Road Rage driver laid on the horn while gesticulating madly. Calm Driver got out of his car, smiled & waved at Road Rage, and then took a picture of Road Rage with a camera phone. Calm Driver got back in his car before the light turned green. Road Rage was flailing wildly in his car. And it made everyone standing at the bus stop (who was watching the whole ordeal) laugh.

    • That’s a great response, but Calm Driver is lucky Road Rage didn’t pull out a gun or punch him in the face. Those people are generally very angry, impulsive, and violent. I had a guy come up to my car and smash his fist into the window because I had the gall to stop at an almost-red light, and my friend had a similar thing happen in Bethesda except the guy followed her and was firing shots at her car.

      • Ditto that! I’ve had someone try to get into my car and when they couldn’t they tried to damage the outside. People are crazy. I keep my phone nearby (just in case), avoid eye contact, and make sure my doors are locked and windows are up.

      • My thought exactly! Good way to get a cap popped in your *&% in D.C. You never know how long it’s been since the road rage guy went off his meds.

        • Nothing like driving through the streets of DC and its suburbs to learn just how many of its residents have serious mental problems. Scarily, many of them appear to be well-off, indicating there are a lot of nut jobs around here with high-paying jobs.

          • Seriously!

A older woman in a Volvo who otherwise looked sane took it upon herself to get out of her car when parked behind me at a red light and bang on my window because I had to dodge rather than stop for her when she decided to change lanes without signaling, looking, or allowing for enough space when she was trying to navigate 14th St. near U.

I’ll stick to the windows up and doors locked advice, with the assumption that any nutty driver is probably actually a little bit nuts.

      • So true. Still a happy rave. Glad you weren’t a witness to something bad!

  • Folks,all-wheel-drive and ABS aren’t magic;you still need to have traction. No you can’t drive in the snow just like you can normally. And I realise this wasn’t Snowpocalypse, but it was enough that you need to watch what the frack you’re doing. Slow down, don’t try to shoot the gap,and hang up the cell phone.

  • rave–Harriet Tregoning reappointed to head the Office of Planning

  • Looking forward to the weekend so I’ll have some daylight time to play in this lovely snow. Oh, wait, it’s the last shopping weekend before Christmas. Never mind.

  • rant: My health does not respond well to long periods of below-freezing temperatures. I feel like crap.
rave: Looking forward to Christmas with the fam! The weather forecast predicts 60 degrees in Las Vegas 🙂

  • Rave: The sun is shining, the weather is sweet now.

    Rant: The snow is meeellllttttiiiiinnnnnnggggggg…..

  • Rant: never. ever. going to wrap up work before the holidays. Never. Shit needs to stop coming in at this rate.

Rave: my son is awesome and hilarious and melts away all the work-related crabbiness.

  • Rave: Cathy Lanier, Harriet Tregoning sticking around; and Nickles is not

Rant: Not having a machine to slow down the wheels of time during the holiday season.

    • Rave: Muriel is Chair of TPB. Upper NW representing on the regional stage. Let’s not embarrass her with failed local transportation projects and lack of robust funding.

  • Rant: DCist “improved” their comments section, so now I can no longer make or read comments.

Rave: PoP’s comments are much better anyway.

  • jack5

Rant: Too busy, working like a dog, no time to wind down for the dating scene

    Rave: Yay! No wife problems!

  • Rave: Only 5 working business days, plus some holiday fun before starting the new job in January!

Rant: Still oscillating between feeling elated to start a new chapter and feeling terrified that I’m making the wrong choice.

  • Emmaleigh504

    Rant: Dialog
    Rave: the Weekend!

  • Rant: Quitting smoking sucks.
Rave: I’m doing better than I thought I would.

    • I’m quitting in 13 days. I’m a cliche.

What’s working for you best? I can’t wait to start again when I’m 75.

      • Rave: I am thinking 80 or 85. I stopped at 23 after 10 years of smoking. Sometime much later made a NYE resolution to start smoking again. I failed, but at least I was able to pick up the 3-4 times a year cigar. In my early 40s I guess I am half way there!

Rant: They don’t exist, it’s the only way. If you’re still thinking about them all the time you’re not free. Control your mind and your lungs will follow. 3 days 2 weeks 3 months 2 years to success. You can do it.

      • I went cold turkey on Monday. Slipped and had one today. Gum (nicotine and regular) have been helping. A phone app and reading articles about it good motivation. But it really is a mental thing. You have to not want to smoke anymore and keep that in the front of your thoughts. Or so I say five days into it…

  • Rave: Got a cute snowman pencil from my coworker. I haven’t had a festive pencil since I was a kid.

  • Rant: Why do I always seem to look at people right at the moment they decide to spit?

Rave: Online shopping. As I get lazier every year it just gets better plus my UPS delivery guy is cute.

    • In my neighborhood, I have it on good authority that they’re spitting BECAUSE you’re looking. It’s a (dis)respect thing.
