Sherman Ave Streetscape Contract Awarded

From Council Member Jim Graham:

“I am pleased to announce that DDOT has informed me that the contract for the reconstruction of Sherman Avenue has been awarded. As you may know, I had worked with the Mayor to insure funding for this important project in this fiscal year.

There was a pre-construction meeting with the contractor this week. The contractor is scheduled to start construction on October 18th.

There have been ongoing community meetings culminating in a final design of the streetscape. Thanks for that essential contribution!

This will provide further substantial revitalization for Ward 1, here in our east side neighborhoods.”

  • Is there any news on how the construction and narrowing of the road will affect the 63 bus route? Any info would be much appreciated!

  • Yahoo! This is going to make such a HUGE difference in the feel of Sherman Ave.. The plans I’ve seen look great, as opposed to what is now one of the ugliest stretches of road / sidewalk in NW D.C. I am curious to hear if they plan to do anything interesting to improve the (already fairly decent) green space where New Hampshire and Sherman intersect. Some public art there or some additional nice trees would be cool.

  • Great news. Another step forward for revitalizing underloved parts of DC.

  • Slowing traffic on this residential street will make a huge and needed difference in public safety, especially since the school at Kenyon has been reopened. We’ve already lost one child to an auto accident caused by excessive speeding at the intersection at Columbia just over a year ago…

  • Trees look beautiful on N.H. Ave just south of the Petworth metro, and we’re so happy to see these green medians extend a little further south.

    One question:
    — how will we water the trees?

I’m happy to water them, but it seems inefficient to lug a little watering can to and from. I haven’t figured out a better solution for street trees on our block.
