The Craigslist ad says:

“Studio Dream Space!
Hardwood and Stainless appliances
Soaring Ceilings with large dressing room
All new appliances and views of 16th Street
All utilities included in the rent
Sorry, No Dogs”

Does $1399 sound reasonable for a studio at this location?

  • Looks tiny, with tiny kitchen, but my guess would be a good deal for the neighborhood, particularly with utilities included.

  • saf

That is a vile, dangerous, horrible building – PoP, I think we’ve discussed it before, so maybe you can find the previous post?

  • What a stupid layout. Makes more sense to tuck the bed behind a wall than to tuck the kitchen behind the wall. Who wants guests to have to walk through the closet (dressing room) in order to get to the bathroom?

    • That’s a fairly standard studio layout. I used to have it and liked it, though I guess it could be problematic if your closet’s a total mess all the time.

  • The worst thing about this place (and that’s quite a competition) is that they DO have dogs. There are a bunch of dogs that are grandfathered in. So YOU can’t have a dog even though your neighbor does. That’s just salt in the wound.

  • Is the Argonne management still that bad? I mean, the hallways are drab and the kitchens are done comically cheaply, but friends live there and I’ve never heard of problems with management.

    • I live there right now, have for three years. Aside from a minor clerical error a year or two ago, I haven’t had a single problem with the management. If something doesn’t work, it gets fixed on the same day, and I’ve never seen a bug in my apartment.

I actually love it (and I did do a fair amount of comparison shopping…the apartments are a pretty good deal for the neighborhood, although this particular studio layout seems pretty cramped). I guess it used to be a terrible building, based on people’s reactions to it, but that hasn’t been my experience at all.

  • Oh, my goodness, that kitchen is even tinier than the kitchen in my efficiency. And with an apartment that tiny, you probably won’t be having guests over much–at least not the sort who will mind walking through a closet.

Even with all the utilities included, $1,399 seems a bit much.

    • Wow, I had no idea the walking-through-a-closet thing was seen as so bizarre. I guess my visitors are more laid-back than most. I think it’s kind of fun, personally.

  • $200 more and you can get a bedroom, why would you ever rent this? Unless you’re claustrophilic.
