Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

I’ll start with a rave, went to the Arboretum on Sunday and the koi pond was in full effect.

  • Speaking of the Arboretum, is there a convenient way to get their on a bike from the local trails? I ride the Northeast Branch Trail a lot (and sometimes the Northwest) and that goes near Blandesburg Road. I’m not sure where to get off the trail to get to the Arboretum.

Rave: Went on a nice boat trip with my brother and sister in law yesterdat.

    Rant: Got stung by jellyfish!

  • Rant – My old A/C works just fine, especially after I cleaned the filter that I knew I was supposed to clean, especially when manufacturer’s instructions to clean the filter regularly are printed right on the unit. Works almost as well as the new A/C I bought.

    Rave – New quiet A/C

  • I only have this rant, I just read on another blog.

A New DYRS? Think Again. For those who thought Mayor Fenty’s appointment of prosecutor Robert Hildum to head the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services would take the troubled agency in a new direction, that assessment is already looking fuzzy. The Examiner reports that among Hildum’s first actions was to hire Linda K. Harllee-Harper to serve as the agency’s head of internment. Harllee-Harper formerly served on the Board of Directors of Peacoholics, the organization that received millions in public funds during the Fenty Administration and has worked closely with Ron Moten, the organization’s founder — you know, the one who compared Fenty to “Jesus,” was involved in the fire truck sent to the DR, was accused of paying youth to vote in a straw poll for Fenty, protested Council legislation against vote buying, and sued a Ward 8 ANC Commissioner for libel. Now Harllee-Harper will “play a pivotal role” in awarding DYRS contracts to organizations, including Peaceaholics. Taxpayers, hold onto your wallets

    • Give me a break. The problem with Youth Services is not the agency that runs them –it’s the City Council that writes laws that prevent actual punishment for crimes –Mendo, Graham, Yvette (probably others) are on a concerted mission to prevent any form of meaningful prosecution of district youth for crimes. The feeling is that if rich people can afford expensive lawyers to keep their kids out of jail, then they can adjust the laws of DC to prevent poor kids from staying out of jail.

The problem with this approach is somewhat obvious, but it has very little to do with the mayor, whomever it turns out to be and the administration of DYRS. It’s the entire political philosophy that kids will grow out of it if just left unchecked.

  • Rant – leaf blowers @7AM.

Rant – college kids letting their friends in line at Trader Joes.

    Rave – Saturday’s weather

  • Rave: Bolt Bus to NYC: Cheap, relaxing, clean.
Rant: Bolt Bus to NYC: Overly long trip when you don’t take the main highway and you decide to stop randomly in the middle for a break. Who needs a break on a 4 hour bus trip?

  • Rant: My dog has taken to chewing on books. I thought she’d kicked the habit but she’s moved on to hard cover books. I came home to find “One Nation Under Dog” well chewed.

Ironically (or something) two of the other books she’s chewed have been on dog training.

Rave: Beautiful heirloom tomatoes and armfuls of basil coming from my garden. Another rave – twice in the last week I’ve seen a hummingbird in my flowers.

    • If you need help with the basil, let me know! I’d love to purchase a bunch from you.

    • Hummingbirds? Very cool! What kind of flowers were they visiting? We have a lot of praying mantises, but I think that’s about as exotic as it’s going to get in Petworth.

      • I did see a hummingbird before but it was years ago. This female Rufous hummingbird enjoyed a variety of nectars from petunias, torenia and my neighbor’s honeysuckle. I hope she comes back, and brings her friends!

      • are you kidding? in the past month alone, my backyard has had hummingbirds, a red tailed hawk, a peregrine falcon, possums and raccoons.

        • hmm, where? So in Petworth I have seen possums and racoons, but they are pretty urban-friendly. Other than that we mainly get feral cats, sparrows, and squirrels. Hummingbirds seem pretty exotic. That said, it would be fun to plant something they really like and see what happens. MPinDC, what neighborhood are you in?

          • I’m in Mt Pleasant and outside of the hummingbirds I have the usual urban critters – squirrels, finches, neighbor’s cat…

          • What I have seen in my yard:

Squirrels, chipmunks, salamanders, raccoons, foxes, a coyote, opossum, deer, milk snakes, toads, deer mice, moles, and app. 65 species of birds including raptors, accipiters, black vultures, and one time five pileated woodpeckers at once. Oh, and hoo-mans.

          • Where you living, gardyloo? Sounds like Wild Kingdom.

  • Rave: pants all loose and baggy like I lost 10 LbS over the weekend.
Rant: pants are way old & the stretch prolly just gave out b/c my other pants fit the same.

  • It’s the time of year to use or lose basil as it wants to go to seed. I’ve already made enough pesto and basil vinegar so I’d be happy to give you a bunch. You can email me through my blog or my name at yahoo.

  • Rave: had a great relaxing weekend

Rant: work is very very stressful today, too many people, not enough staff, the energy here is thick and feels like something bad is going to happen. It’s making me tired and headachey.

  • Rave: Miscue and I had a great time at the Legg Mason Final thanks to the Prince. Thanks, Prince!

  • Rave: Great weekend trip to Baltimore. Nice weather, hanging out with my cousin, good food, lots of walking.
Rant: Tired from the trip, Amtrak delays.

  • Neither rant nor rave, just curious – has anyone been by Burritos Fast in MtP recently? I was in last week and the tip jar was full of condoms and other items of a related nature. Anyone seen this? What’s it mean?

  • Rave: The 11th Street bike lane. Whether to work or to play, uphill or down, that thing rules. Especially when it leads me to Meridian Pint.

Rant: The difficulty of biking between 5th St NW and North Capitol/points in NE. Either Florida or M St could really use a set of bike lanes for getting across town.

  • Rave – a whole leisurely afternoon in the Natural History museum with a precocious 6 year old god-daughter.

Nice Rant – It was like a 4 hour AP biology exam! What is DNA? What’s a species? Is a Moai a real god? Please name every organism in the coral reef tank. . . (I did come in around 90% on that one.) And DNA is like legos to build things that are alive.

True Rant – After just 2 minutes inside the ($11.00 for 2 of us) butterfly exhibit, when the kid got freaked out and had to leave, they would give no refund, and would not even let me give the 2 tickets to a mom with two kids who couldn’t afford the admission. Really really extra- un-necessarily crappy policy.

A couple of years ago when same child was carried screaming out of 3D dinosaur Imax, they were very kind and promptly refunded.

Unrelated, but reminds me of the time as a kid when I was treated by my pal’s family to some ice cream. They didn’t firmly press the scoop on the cone and my ice cream fell to the floor. They would not give me another scoop and my pal’s dad wouldn’t but me another scoop. So I sat and watched all my friends enjoy their ice cream while I had none. I was about 5 and it was horrible.

When I was in college and worked at an ice cream joint, the one time a kid lost his scoop, I gave him another for free. When you are a kid, few things suck worse than watching your friends enjoy ice cream while you can’t b/c people are too cheap to replace a scoop that was lost do to no fault of your own.
