This was an interesting link I found on twitter yesterday from Harlem Condo Life. They write:
“So I called over to the press office of Busboys and Poets to see what the deal was and the person who answered the phone confirmed they do have plans to open another restaurant outside of the Beltway and into Harlem.”
That’s wild and it got me thinking – what are other stores/shops/restaurants that originated in DC and expanded to other cities outside the Beltway?

Mat, Thanks again for your support; and your point is well taken.
Well, the obvious answer is Five Guys.
But good for them for expanding, especially into such a fitting area!
Five Guys started in Arlington.. which I guess is the same thing.
Typical NYC, always ripping us off
Hot Shoppes started here, but that chain is long gone. My grandfather used to take me to the HS at Prince George’s Plaza in the early-80′s. Memories…

Hard Times Cafe…it may be a stretch since its satellite locations are just outside DC. But there’s my entry.
I saw one in Indianapolis a few years back.

GEICO
The Big Cup in NYC started out as the Pop Stop on 17th Street (between P & Q).
Hechts! FTW
Woodward and Lothrop also
California Tortilla started in Bethesda… http://californiatortilla.com/about/
They’re not huge yet, but they are in PA, DE, VA, MD, and DC.
Roy Rogers started locally, I think in Northern VA. And now I can only find them at NJ Turnpike/295 rest stops.
Hardees ruined the Roy.
Roy Rogers is on the come back . . .just wait and see.
There’s one in Manassas, but it’s terrible. A pathetic shell of the greasy deliciousness it used to serve up
There’s at least one in Frederick that was pretty good the last time I tried it. But I don’t get to Frederick very much.
I saw one this past weekend up on 355 in Gaithersburg/Germantown! I almost got in an accident I was so excited to see a throw back to my childhood in days in MD.
Didn’t Silver Diner start somewhere in MD, inside the Beltway?
Thanks for linking to us. We’re excited about the possibility of Busboys and Poets coming to upper Manhattan, ie Harlem. I used to live in DC but don’t know the answer to the question. However there maybe an exchange of restaurants happening. I hear NYC based Shake Shack is headed to the Capital. Not a bad exchange if all deals are complete!
