Car Flipped on Sherman Ave, NW

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to share this photo with you of a flipped car on Sherman Ave. This happened at about 9:30 this morning in front of my house as I was taking the dog out for a walk. Amazingly, no one was hurt and fire fighters are breaking the windshield to free the driver.”

Yikes! Glad to hear no one was hurt.

Actually I schedule posts on a time delay and the prostitution post is slated to post at 12:30. The info is from the MPD listserv which was initially released yesterday and is the exact post I have scheduled. Just a matter of timing my friend.

  • I was wondering what happened on Sherman this morning! I wandered out of my house a little foggy this morning and couldn’t figure out what was going on.

Any news on how on earth a car came to be flipped when they should have either been going into or coming out of a 15 MPH school zone?!

If they managed to flip a car at 15 MPH, that’s a pretty amazing feat.

But I have the feeling that some reckless driving and speed were involved and I have got very little sympathy for that.

This makes the second of two absurd accidents on that block in 6 months. The first was back in December when an SUV managed to plow down/get wrapped around the light pole on the corner.

I would love to see some actual enforcement of speed and pedestrian laws on the street!

    • To correct my math – the second in 8 months.

      I remain pretty irate though.

      • You know, I always wonder about stuff like this. I feel like it’s got to be nearly impossible to roll a car like this if you are following the rules of the road. So if you manage to do it, something pretty extraordinary must have happened – and if it was driver error or misconduct, that’s probably someone whose license to drive should be taken away from them.

What if any is the penalty for something like this (if it is the driver’s fault)? Or do they just call it an “accident” and thank heaven that no one was hurt?

    • Agreed. Even with all the schools around, people are always zooming on this street every time I cross it. Hopefully, the Sherman Ave re-design will also help ensure drivers actually drive below the speed limit.

  • Along those lines, last Wednesday evening I was riding the 54 up 14th Street around 7:00 and noticed that from around Meridian Street to around Spring Street on nearly every block there were police arresting people. Looked like a giant round up. Police – mostly in street clothes with POLICE vests – had two guys around Taqueria DF and more up further in two additional locations.

    What was going on?

  • There have been some crazy accidents on Sherman. A few months ago, within a few days I saw the same light pole struck twice. As others have noted, I just don’t understand how it’s possible on what’s supposed to be such a slow street. When are they starting the redevelopment of Sherman, making it 1 lane?

  • hopefully this jerk never drives again

  • Speaking of flipped, or nearly-flipped, vehicles… I saw two firetrucks with sirens blaring tear through the intersection of Riggs and North Capitol yesterday evening. This wasn’t your normal on-our-way-to-a-fire driving. More like an action movie. They swerved around the stopped cars practically on two wheels. I’ve never seen such scary emergency-vehicle driving. Didn’t even know a full-sized fire truck could maneuver quite like that. It’s hard to convey just how fast and close it all was.

  • yikes that is about where my car was parked 3 hours earlier this morning! Lemme guess, Murrland tags?
