You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this week?

  • Rave: Interviewing for a new job on Monday with basically my dream company. A lateral move in terms of roles and responsibilities, but with an organization that shares and regularly explores the sort of ethical values that matter to me.

Rant: I’m exhausted. I can’t seem to figure out how to make my brain stop running prior to 4AM on a) potential interview questions ; or b) guilt about moving on.

Any one have any meditation class recommendations in the neighborhood? Because if you do, I can use all the help I can get!

    • Prince Of Petworth

Past Tense (a PoP advertiser) is celebrating its 1 year anniversary with a free yoga class on Tues. in Mt. Pleasant:

“Tuesday, which is our actual anniversary, our instructor John Horan will be teaching a free class in Lamont Plaza at 8:15 p.m.”

      • John is an amazing instructor!!! Thanks Pop!

      • Awesome lead, but I’ll be indulging in another stress-busting activity that evening – good food and drink for a good cause at a New Futures fundraising dinner at Scion in Dupont.

For anyone who’s interested in joining, here are the details:

WHEN: Tuesday, July 13, Starting at 5:30pm

WHAT: Come out to dinner and support New Futures, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to help DC-area’s neediest youth complete post-secondary education.

        WHERE: Scion Restaurant, 2100 P Street (P and 21 Streets), http://www.scionrestaurant.com

You see more about the organization here: http://www.newfuturesdc.org/

A friend of mine is on the junior board and he’s looking forward to seeing the community come out to support the organization. He’s less excited about making a fool of himself – the board members will be the wait staff for the evening!

    • Try walking the labyrinth at the Washington National Cathedral (but you’ll have to wait for the last Tuesday of the month. http://www.nationalcathedral.org/worship/crossroads.shtml

A friend used to meditate on Sunday evenings at All Souls – not sure what group led the practice.

      Good luck with the interview!

      • Thanks for the suggestions and the well wishes!

Awesome blog, by the way. 🙂 I have been battling tree of heaven and bindweed (I think – although I’ve never seen it flower) all summer, but never knew what to call them. Now my enemy has a name!

Any insight on how to battle bindweed? If it is the same vine that I have taking over my gardens, it keeps coming and coming and coming. Pulling it up seems pointless because the vines tend to break off from the main root, which then sends more vines out, and the cycle continues.

        • Thanks for checking out my blog 🙂

Re bindweed – being persistent in pulling it up will help keep it in check. But more effective is careful application of roundup or another herbicide. Mixing in some mild soap helps the roundup penetrate tough leaves.

  • Rant – Metro busses that park with their “butts” sticking out into 1-2 lanes on Georgia Avenue.

Rant/Rave – I hear Sweet Mango Cafe At GA & NH Ave is closing soon… I’m both sad and happy over that.

Rave – The heat is giving us a 5 Degree break… sigh.

    • Re: Sweet Mango – Good riddance. I’m over the double parkers which block New Hampshire’s right lane when the left lane is already backed up due to left-turners.

    • Is that true Pop? Is Sweet mango closing? I would be sad, they have great food.

  • rave: the heat is finally breaking…. or at least it seemed like it at 7am, which is the last time I was actually outside.

rant: 7am was the last time I was actually outside.

  • rave: our rain garden is being installed as I type. can’t wait to get home to see how it looks!

rant(?): I’m becoming a garden geek!

  • Why in satan’s green goblet do people say the word “exactly” twice, when speaking on the phone and wishing to demonstrate approval of what the other person is saying? Twice. It’s always twice. Exactly, exactly.

  • Rave1: going to the baseball game tonight with a lovely gentleman I just met

Rave2: the weather doesn’t make me feel like my face is melting off

Rave3: office mate going on vacation today! Peace for me for a week!!

  • Rave: Nationals tickets tonight and I lucked out on Strasburg pitching.
Rave: My electric meter started spinning backwards this week; solar is fun.
Rave: New bed, can now fire the chiropractor.
Rave: Repointing began on my house.
Rant: The dust from the grinders found it’s way into my house and it’s unsafe to be in there. It’s also going to be a mess to clean.
Rant: How do you take care of an aging parent who refuses to take care of herself properly?

  • Rave: Finally going to jazz in the garden tonight!

Rant: I did a stupid mildly drunk thing after Wednesday’s Nats game and totally busted up my ankle. Soo dumb.

Rave: Still on Cloud 9 from my big summer trip!
Rant: Credit card bill from aforementioned trip is en route 🙁

Rave/Rant: This guy I was kind of seeing called it quits because we were on different pages (lame feeling). But we really do want different things, so I’m really not that upset about it (win)!

EXTRA Rant: I haven’t made one damn comment all day, but apparently I’m posting too quickly? Lost Post #1. Laaame.

  • Anyone know why 13th St. NW between K and I, plus part of Franklin Sq. park was blocked off this morning by police?

    captcha: trounced several

  • RANT: I am not properly caffeinated for this day.
RAVE: I only have one rant.

  • Most people are normal, but some just have no idea how to get on and off on the metro, particularly at metrocenter and Chinatown. Fools block the door just standing there with the lame excuse that theyre getting off at the next station. Meanwhile the door clearly becomes a bottleneck and people can’t get on, even though everyone can see a big empty space just inside the train beyond that day’s dummy. It’s just selfish. Get in and go to the middle. Unless you’re carrying all sorts of huge bags, there will be plenty of time to get out at your station with lots of other people.

I suppose I should quit commuting on the metro.

  • Rant: took almost a week for my apt bldg to clean up all the glass on the lower garage ramp.

    Rave: Vittoria Randonneurs don’t flat.

  • Rant: Now that Leo the dog has been found, is it wrong to think that his caregivers would take down all the fliers they posted on trees and utility poles throughout the neighborhood?

  • Rave: Cool pets!
Rant: Those who think cute pets are cool.

  • As I exited the Mt. Vernon Metro today a teenage girl threw a bunch of trash on the ground as she was crossing the street. I asked her if she was going to pick that up and she told me to “mind my own business”. I asked her again to pick it up and she had some choicer words for me including calling me a “white b@#ch” and continued to yell at me as we walked down the street. Luckily there was a policeman there and heard the commotion. I told him what happened as she continued to call me the pet name she had come up with for me, while also yelling at the officer that I was a racist. The officer told me I did the right thing, stay cool and forget about it. Also he said that he cannot write a ticket for littering unless it is thrown from a moving car. I did some deep breathing on the walk home but am so frustrated. I am accustomed to apathy by some of the DC police force but have these questions

    1) Am I the only one who shies away from situations like this for fear of being called a racist? I want to call people out for trashing the neighborhood, but having a young girl scream names at me on my own street is not a great feeling.
    2) Really!?! No littering in DC. You can just throw trash all over the ground? That can’t be right.

    • Welcome to DC, this is very common. And generally yes, its only littering if done from a moving car. I think her littering could be a misdemeanor, but officers don’t write tickets for misdemeanors as people cannot be compelled to produce ID for misdemeanors in DC.

Look at the bright side, it may be the closest to political expression she ever comes to.

      • You asked the person to pick up the trash they said ‘no, mind your business.’ Did you think asking again was going to make a difference? You escalated that encounter and put yourself at risk.

Other people shy away from these situations because you cannot tell other people what to do. Asking someone to pick up trash a second time under those circumstances sound to that person like you are telling them what to do.

RANT – Two $125 speeding tickets watch out for unmarked car on Michigan Ave & 12th Street in Brookland.

    • RANT: UGH! I hate people who throw their trash in the street like that. Then cuss you when you say “Hey is this your trash? Did your Mama teach you to throw your trash on the ground like, that you piece of sh&^?” Cause it doesn’t matter what race you are, we all want to live in a clean city. At least most of us. Makes me wish for an invisible web gun or something so I could go all Spidey on them.

      • And by piece of sh&^? I mean “young lady.”

RAVE: Ummm. Lemme get back to you on that one.

  • Rant: Got bike stolen out of my building’s locked parking garage
Rave: Gives me something to complain about to landlord
Rant: Can’t go on group ride as planned this weekend
Rave: Get to buy new bike…eventually

  • Rant: Went to get my car inspected on thurs and the line was around the block at 10:30. No big deal because they were moving. Naturally when I got into the line it didn’t move for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Why – because the managers wouldn’t leave their air conditioned offices so there weren’t enough inspectors to get the cars through. When I finally reached the inspection station entrance one of the employees told me that’s why the line was halted and everyone was made to sit there.

  • Rave: In Colorado surrounded by beautiful snow-peaked mountains
Rant: My cat sitter called to report my electricity was out for 40 hours
Rave: It came back on while I was on the line with her
Double-rave: got to go to the Woody Creek Tavern – Hunter Thompson’s old hangout.
