2010 Capital Criterium pro cycling race is happening this Sunday, July 11

“The 2010 Capital Criterium pro cycling race is happening this Sunday, July 11 in support of D.C.’s bid to host the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia in 2012. This is one of the city’s premiere pro cycling events and is a major effort in support of D.C.’s Giro bid. The race will be on and around Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street, NW.

Some of the event highlights include:

* GiroDC2012 Celeb Charity Ride, featuring Mayor Fenty, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Italian Ambassador Giulio Terzi and other noted city officials.
* CapCrit Lifestyle Expo which will feature a live performance by the Morrison Brothers Band
* CycleLife Kids’ Safety Races which is being staged to promote the importance of cycling safety for kids ages 3-11.

The pro-race starts at 1:15 pm., however, race-day activities begin as early as 8 a.m. when the Lifestyle Expo opens. There will be interview opportunities with Mayor Fenty, Mark Sommers who is the CapCrit Race Director and Chair of the US Stages Working Group, and other key supporters of the Giro bid.”

    • Really you think that this bike race was strategically planned oh maybe a year or more ago (last year it was cancelled) to be in competition w/ WC viewership? Reeeeeelly?

      • No, I don’t think it was strategically planned, I think it was poorly planned. Believe me, I’d like to go to the race, but I can’t be in two places at once.

    Just got a release from DDOT about some street closings:

    On Sunday, July 11, 2010, the Capital Criterium bike race will take place in downtown Washington, D.C. The event begins at 8:00 a.m. and should be over by 3:30 p.m. Motorists in the area can expect road closures to begin as early as 3:00 a.m. due to set-up and not reopen until 5:00 p.m. for post race clean up. The following roads will be closed for the event:

    – Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 9th Street to 14th Street

    – E Street, NW from 10th Street to 14th Street

    – F Street, NW from 11th Street to 14th Street

    – 13th Street, NW from Pennsylvania Avenue, to G Street

    – 12th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue, to G Street

    – 11th Street, NW from Pennsylvania Avenue, to F Street

    – 10th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue, to E Street

    Motorists can expect to find heavy pedestrian and cyclist traffic in the area and are encouraged to use extreme caution. Visitors are encouraged to use mass transit to get to the downtown area.
