You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this long weekend?

  • rant: it is disgustingly hot outside, and only going to get worse.

    rave: short work week!

    • It’s not that hot! After this winter, I won’t complain about the heat.

Rant: I’m at work instead of being outside.

Rave: I’m employed and have health insurance that I’m using to the max these days. Outside will be there later on.

      • It’s pretty hot, but as long as you’re not doing strenuous activity I think it’s bearable. We actually had people over for Memorial Day, despite having no AC, and no one seemed to mind.

  • Rave: We finally got stuff planted in our front yard so we are no longer the worst looking house on the block. It still needs a lot of work but it already looks so much better.

Rant: The backyard project is coming along slow and it is $$$$.

  • Rave: Getting one more room in the new house painted. It is finally starting to feel more like a home, less like an overpriced hovel.

Rant (or something like it): Vincent Gray canvassers who interrupted my gardening this weekend by rolling up in two matching, brand spanking new Cadillacs to try to guilt me into taking a yard sign. Seriously? Are canvassers above walking in this town? Or not even above walking, but above being seen in anything less than a pair of sparky new luxury cars? I’m thinking that Gray may have yet another campaign issue to worry about.

Did any one else see these guys in Columbia Heights/Petworth area this weekend?

  • Rant: Digging
Rave: French drain project finished. My purple-board drywall showed up today. Now, I can finish my basement office.

  • Rant: Contractors who don’t get back to you with estimates. Do they really have that much work?

Rave: Went to Upshur Pool yesterday. DC public pools are great. Wish they were open in the evenings after work.

  • Rant: didn’t have a long weekend but instead worked the entire time.

Rave: it was quiet enough to shovel a ton of work into the completed queue.

  • Got the Normandy planters I had been searching for FOREVER!!!! Wooo – hoo!

  • Rant: Noisy hoopty rolling up in front of my house Sunday night, with at least one guy leaning out to vomit loudly for like five minutes. When he had it all out of his system, they drove off. Just enough light to see the driver sucking on a 40. Not enough to get the plates.

CH is gross. I haven’t seen this much public puking since college. No, wait… not even then. Sorority girls had the decency to find a bathroom.

  • Rant – Tiny Desk Unit’s second song “Couscous” was terrible last night. Performance art terrible.

    • Had no idea Tiny Desk Unit was still around! Had a housemate in the early 80s who was a major groupie.

  • Rant: Wedding season is expensive.

  • Rave – It took 5 years, but the block is finally quiet now that the last of the bad apples has moved out of the house a few doors down. My apologies to the neighbors of the owner or renter of whatever house the teenagers are now hanging out in and around all day and night.

    My captcha = have drilling

    • How’d you do it?

      • Jim Graham was very helpful in getting the owners of one of the houses to move the bad tenants out. The final straw was a shootout that took place at 9 pm on a weeknight a couple of years ago. The police said it was the result of a drug rivalry involving one of the tenants and another group of dealers in the area. I sent emails to Graham and the 3D substation and both were very responsive. Graham got in touch with the owner and pressed them to take some kind of action. Shortly thereafter, the tenants were gone and the house was sold to someone who moved in and is a good neighbor.
The problem with the second house was a renter who, unbeknownst to the owner, was renting out rooms to other people, some of whom tended to attract large crowds of visitors at all hours of the night. Complaints were made to the police. Eventually, the owners fixed up the place, got rid of the old tenant, and rented it to new tenants who, so far, seem to be good neighbors.

    • Oh I can’t WAIT til the three bad apples on my street leave. Am positive sure one house is full of illegal immigrantss and the other deals drugs so I call the cops on them ALL the time in hopes they’ll get the picture and leave. The third bad apple is just an inconsiderate moron who has very loud parties all the time (apparently no one in that house has a job) with “guests” over-flowing into the street and they throw their nasty garbage (beer bottles, grape and orange soda cans, chicken wings, etc) all over the place. REALLY getting on my nerves.

  • RAVE: Today’s my birthday! Happy hours and fun all week!

EXTRA RAVE: I think my horrible possibly-drug-dealing neighbors moved out yesterday! Best birthday present ever!

Rant: Icky sticky hot weather. And it is only going to get worse…

  • Rant – Stupid Columbia Heights Farmers Market on Saturday. Why not Sunday?

  • Rant: I can’t find an apartment in my price range in the area of DC that I want to live unless I’m willing to live in a 350 square foot space.

    Rave: It’s finally (unofficially) summer.

    • You’re right, housing prices are far on this side of ridiculous. But, you’ll be amazed at what you can do with a small space. My fiancee and I live comfortably in 320 sq ft.

    • Emmaleigh504

I live quite comfortably in about 330 sq ft. It took a little bit of imagination to get the furniture just right, but now I hardly notice how small my place is. That said, small apartments aren’t for everyone.

  • Rave: PoP used my photo in this post! And, I graduated from law school on Friday.

Rant: I get to spend the next 8 weeks studying for the bar exam.

  • Rave: Will be in San Diego in a few days.

Rant: Will be working nearly nonstop while I’m there.

  • Rave: Biked 35 miles on Sunday, the most I’ve ridden this year. And I’m not completely sore and worn out from it.

Rant: Brought my bike in for a tuneup yesterday and I won’t get it back until the end of the week.

Rave: Two festival gigs this weekend!

Rant: I have to work extra hours this week so I can take off early Friday for one of the gigs.

  • Rave: My brother & sis-in-law were in town Thursday through Monday–the first they’ve been to visit me in the 5 years I’ve lived here. We had a blast! Plus, it’s nice to hang out w/out our parents or his kids around.

Rant: I now have a hideously large blister between my toes from all of the touristy walking we did…and this is keeping me from getting a pedicure, too!

  • Rave: strawberry picking at Butler’s Orchard this weekend = lots of fresh strawberries and strawberry pie

Rant: one of my best friends is moving far away (well not really – from Mount Pleasant to Eckington, but still) and I’m going to miss him a lot

  • Emmaleigh504

    Rave: Lovely warm weather.
