Garden of the Day (Reader Suggestion)

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to send you this recommendation for your “Garden of the Day” piece. I don’t know if you or anyone else has ever noticed it, but some guerilla gardener has take over a tiny patch of green space on the corner of Kansas and Taylor — right next to an auto body shop — and turned it into a Victory Garden. I think this is the second year they’ve done that. I love it.”

  • I’m all for guerrilla gardening but I would strongly advise against eating produce grown directly in soil (as opposed to raised beds) right next to an auto body shop, particularly the leafy greens and any root vegetables.

  • That garden has been there for several years now. I don’t think there’s anything “guerrilla” about it.

And I totally agree with what Joseph said about not eating produce grown there. The soil is bound to have high lead levels, at the very least.

    • as far as terms go, unless it’s a garden put in by that auto shop, then it’s a “guerrilla” garden, meaning someone took over some public space.

  • I’m sure it’s fine, they sell all of the produce to the Yes! Organic Market acrss the street.
