Dear PoP – 7th St, NW Penn Quarter News

“Dear PoP,

Carmine’s of NYC is coming to 7th St NW between D and E and Gifford’s ice cream on 1000 block of E St NW has been closed for health violations.”

Any fans of Carmine’s? I remember seeing signs that they’ll also have some significant sidewalk seating.

  • Carmine’s = upscale Buca di Beppo + better ingredients – Papal crap on the walls.

  • Bummer for those who purchased today’s Groupon to Giffords.

  • I, too, saw last week that Carmine’s will be coming (although, according to their website, it looks like it won’t be here until September). I’m excited! It’s probably not the best Italian I’ve ever had, but the food is good and it’s a great place to go with a group. I agree with the others that the quality at Carmine’s is significantly higher than the quality at Buca di Beppo.

  • Better than some of the vomitous slurry posing as I-talian food around here.

  • Loved Carmines on the Upper West Side, often saw celebs in this tony neighborhood spot. Great NYC-style Italian fare served family style, perfect place for a group of friends. Theatre District locale less charm.

I do somewhat worry, these NYC Landmarks now taking up in DC seem to be aiming ‘only’ at expense account diners here – not exactly their niche in NYC: Rosa Mexicana, Les Halles (RIP)

  • Gifford’s wasn’t closed for health reasons. They accidentally let their operating license expire.
