The Craigslist ad says:

“Beautiful, one bedroom, one bathroom, English basement apartment with separate entrance in Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC. The apartment has lots of room (500 square feet) and light (five windows and good interior lighting). Walk to Target, Best Buy, Washington Sports Club, restaurants. Metro and bus lines nearby. Central AC, Washer/Dryer in unit. No pets. $995/mo plus electric. One year minimum lease. Security deposit of one month rent. Street parking available. Walk score of 85 out of 100”

This looks like another nice under $1000 option. Do you think $995 sounds reasonable for this 1 bed?

  • not sure I’d want to live in that particular block. Seems like there’s always a bunch of pot smokin’, no-(apparent)-job-havin’, thug-lookin’, craps-shootin’ punks hanging around that triangle park on the surrounding alleys.

but a few blocks away? yeah, I think it’s worth the price.

  • looks good to me! though a 10 minute walk to U street? maybe a 10-minute run! more like a 10 minute walk to the col. heights metro from there.

  • considering most 1BR apartments are renting for $1500+ these days, not a bad sounding deal.

  • yeah… 25 minute walk more like. when people lie about the walk time it makes you wonder what else they are lying about.

    • hmm. how slowly do you walk? i live off 10th St in Columbia heights and I can reach adams morgan in 15 minutes.

From 14th st., a 10 minute walk to admo is very doable. unless you’re missing a leg.

      • the average person walks a mile in 20 minutes. it’s over a mile from this spot to 18th and columbia. 1.15 miles to be exact.

  • Yeah with 14th St traffic you couldn’t even get to U St in 10 minutes if you were *driving*

  • Also “5 min bus ride” to Whole Foods… ha.

  • I wouldn’t live on that block of Oak. That triangle park draws a pretty terrible crowd, which stays exclusively on the west side of the street. Oak Street to the east of 14th is quite nice, and getting nicer.

  • Kind of looks more like a studio with a college dorm-style partition wall thrown up to create a separate bedroom to me.

  • I live a few doors down from there. Those boys never give me a hard time, and I love the street. Oak is like a tomb (noise-wise) compared to Euclid where I used to live.

  • The muggers are just waiting at your doorstep.
    No deal.

  • That seems about going rate for a basement one bedroom. I’m presuming its not recently remodeled. If it is then thats a steal.

  • who uses Maquest anymore???

  • I live on Otis right around the corner, renting a studio for $899 a month and love my place. I’ve had some trouble with the triangle park and the big white house right next to it, but haven’t been physically harmed. I would say the area has definitely gotten better since I moved in just a few months ago. Good deal.

  • I know two people who have been mugged on that block of Oak in the past year, so I probably wouldn’t rent there, but I’m sure someone else will at that price.
