Dear PoP – What’s up With Chatman’s D’Vine Bakery on 9th street by the Convention Center?

“Dear PoP,

Do you know what’s going on with Chatman’s D’Vine Bakery on 9th street by the Convention Center? It seems to be pretty much always closed recently, except for a few rare and random times when I’ve seen someone in there behind the counter. Are they going out of business?”

I’m happy to report that I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich on Saturday afternoon. Though in hindsight I probably should have taken advantage of the breakfast all day on Saturday:

I asked the guy working the counter if they were reducing hours at all and he looked at me like I was crazy. According to him they are business as usual with regular hours. Has anyone else noticed if their hours have been irregular?

And perhaps more importantly, do they have the best sweet potato pie?

  • Have no fear about that place going out of business. They do tons of business for convention crowds (e.g., catering). If you don’t see someone in there/it’s closed, it’s probably b/c they have a big gig and need all of their staff to drop off everything.

Yes: Their sweet potato pie is probably the best in DC.

  • This is good to know. I’ve never seen this place open, and I live in the area. I’ve always wanted to check them out.

  • I walk by at least once a week and it’s always closed. Guess I’ll never get to try the pie!

  • Best sweet potato pie ever (ever ever) was scored at Everlasting Life, who reportedly got it from Soul Vegetarian.

I haven’t had the SPP from these Chatman’s folks but that soul vegetarian specimen would be a tough one to beat. Seriously.

  • Is the Old Dominion brewpub still open down there? And is it any good?

    • Old Dominion is pretty decent for a neighborhood spot (I live about 3 blocks away), although it’s a bit chain-y. The manager that I’ve seen is kind of a dick, but the bartenders are really nice and they have pretty good fried bar food. If you’re not too particular and uppity about your bars then you wouldn’t mind Old Dominion – as in it’s nothing extra special, but you can get your drink on with pretty good beers and normal bar food.

      • ODB is the only bar around Mount Vernon with a sizable menu and awesome beer. SPRING BUCK IS HERE! I can only eat so many kimchee hotdogs at the Passenger. Dvines should close and JJ philly should open in its place.

  • this place is NEVER open!!! EVER!

I walk by twice a day (to and from work) for the past 6 months and I’ve only seen it open maybe 3 or 4 times EVER.

Maybe it is open from like 11-3pm or something like that, which makes it completely worthless to the neighborhood.

  • I just checked their site on Yelp and they claim to be open from Tue-Fri 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sat 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

  • I’m now willing to believe that half of my bafflement at Chatman’s not being open is because I walk by before 11. But that’s only half. Half the time I walk by at other hours — only seen them open twice.

I’m in total agreement that 11-6 is an ABSURD bakery schedule. I guess it’s to do with the Convention Center being primary traffic? But there’s a whole huge neighborhood of people around there that would love freshly baked goodness!

Also, the 2 times I HAVE seen them open, all I see is sweet potato pies on the rack — do they bake bread, bagels, donuts, or any other typical bakery goods?

It’s clear this is not your typical bakery — but so much potential!
