“Dear PoP,

What are some current locations for Lent fish fries? Being from the North, I am very used to almost every church having this, but I know of none down here.”

I feel like I saw one flier last year but can’t remember where it was. Do folks have recommendations?

  • You might want to check out Westminster – they have excellent local jazz along with the friday fish fry, from 6-9.

  • Not a fish-fry, but it does always crack me up how McDonald’s and the other fast food places always advertise their fish sandwiches pretty much only at this time of year.

    • Uh, McDonalds invented their fish sandwhiches specifically because of the Lenten season. Only seems natural that they would step up the ads during this time.

  • People here don’t really do it (and they REALLY don’t sell pierogies in church basements). I’m going to Market Lunch in Eastern Market for lunch today.

    • Yeah, you have to go back to Pgh for that, or take a trip to baltimore

  • I believe St. Augustine’s at 15th and V has a good one. Not exactly the same thing as the ones in upstate new york, and certainly more expensive, but a fish fry nonetheless.

    • St. Augustine’s fish fry is typically from 12pm-7pm each Friday during Lent.

The proceeds benefit the school and are desperately needed this year. The roof of one of the school buildings was severely damaged by snow/ ice leakage, and they had to demolish the building. Fortunately, it was not their main building and they were insured, but they will have a large unbudgeted expense nevertheless to erect a replacement building.
