You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

  • Something very good happened to me this weekend – I got engaged!

  • Congrats!

  • Prince Of Petworth

    Congrats Sammy!

  • Congrats Sammy. I got a Christmas tree. And my wife and I settled into our new place on Penn Ave SE. I miss Columbia Heights/Petworth but looking forward to the new area.

  • Hey Pop- any updates on potential Hell Burger in Adams Morgan? Ellwood Thompsons? Petes Apizzas second location? My stomach is curious.

  • OMG. PoP addressed me personally. He’s a celebrity! I love everything.

  • Rant: it took my building 2 weeks to tell me my broken thermostat works (it doesn’t), and that anyway it’s my landlord’s responsibilty.

Anyone know a good HVAC repair company?

  • Congratulations Sammy!

@julia – if it’s your landlord’s responsibility, then he should be getting the HVAC company (or maintenance guy) to come fix it. I would definitely contact him first.

Rave: met up with Emmaleigh, rg, and PoP last week! So nice meeting people in the city 🙂

Rave: cousin’s graduation in north carolina this past weekend, nice weather, great times with the family

Rave: my mom is hanging out with me in DC this week!

Revel: my Blackberry Storm is in the process of dying after less than a year of life… I took it to a Verizon “authorized agent”, not a Verizon Wireless store, and they didn’t ask any questions, just got a new replacement phone sent to me! Hurrah!

  • @mal – Yes, I’ve talked to the landlord, but he lives in Boston, but my guess it that I’ll end up doing it and just taking it out of my next rent check. Just trying to get a jump on it. But thanks!

  • Rant: After studying for the LSATs to attend law school out west and planning on moving to Colorado with my boyfriend, he drops the bomb on me, saying he’s not sure about us/Colorado. I’m a wreck–I thought this was THE guy. Wondering what went wrong?

Rave: In an effort to lift my mood, I spent entirely too much on a big Christmas tree.

  • kalorini: stay here and study law, become a famous lawyer, and you’ll have problems remembering his name in ten years.

  • Oh wait, one more rave: Today’s Groupon ROCKS! Discount at ShoeFly (Spend $25 for $50 credit) – hellooooo retail therapy

  • Coming up on my one year anniversary, and I gotta say it’s all good stuff!

  • @Kalorini – oh my god, I’m so sorry to hear that… let us know what we can do to help – drinks, dinner, etc.

  • @Anon 12:54pm – I now wish he was a forgettable guy, but he isn’t. We love each other very much, but sometimes it isn’t enough I guess.

Thanks, Mal – I’ll see you at the next PoP event.

  • Julia – if you can screw in a light bulb and change the channel with a remote control at the same time, you can probably install a new thermostat… two wires, like hooking up a car battery, very easy.

Charge your landlord for the thermostat and $100 labor, it might take you a half hour…

  • Rave: The parade of lights cruise aboard the Miss Ann was lovely, though the high stakes poker game never materialized. Wonderful food served by Baron and Baroness von Feilitzsch. The John Glenn is back in the water and led the way after being tboned by the Spirit of Washington earlier this year. Talk of having a flapper party on-board soon, get out those dresses fellas!

Rant: All the home renovations made me miss out on a trip sunday to see santa!

  • @Kalorini: Ugh, that/he totally blows. At least he made this decision *before* you made a major life change for him, though. A friend of mine once moved to NYC to be with her college bf of several years and he dumped her like a few days after she got there. And now you can live your life for yourself – you can go to law school, and/or move out West if you want, but do it because it’s what you want to do.

  • Emmaleigh504

    Who Dat!

  • @Dirty: I wish I had your faith in common sense. In my experience, there’s ~50% of people that are unable to replace light bulbs, 25% of those will try to lick the socket and electrocute themselves.

  • Anyone know why the Bed Bath & Beyond at DCUSA was closed Saturday afternoon (around 4ish)?

  • Rave: I went to the Red and the Black on Friday night and realized it’s my new favorite bar for two reasons: 1) they had the NHL network on all night and the bartender said he would be happy to put on hockey any time I came in. And 2) after watching my Bruins lose, I had a half hour conversation with random people in the bar about neo-classical vs. Keynesian economics. Doesn’t get better.

Rant: I wanted to support a local business and buy my Christmas tree from the hardware store on 11th Street Penn Ave. But they were charging $40 for a 2-foot Douglas fir. Instead I went to Home Depot and got a 5-footer for $19. Big business wins…and I see the irony of that after my conversation at The Red and The Black

  • Anon: For some reason the power went out in the store. They were still letting people in for awhile, but as I was leaving I hear the manager say, “Don’t let anyone else in.”

  • Rave: I set up my three year old pre-lit 9 foot Christmas tree.
    Rant: The pre-lit didn’t.
Rant: Had to go buy new lights to string on it. I hate putting on lights.
    Rave: It still looks good.

  • Rave: Being Jewish means no shopping for Christmas trees, decorations, lights, etc.

Rant: I’m really, really hungover and I should have called in sick today.

  • Rave: Graduating college (again) this Saturday.

Rave: Have a good internship lined up for tax season.

Rant: I hate living in this podunk southern town. Also, I am a 26-year-old with an undergraduate internship.

Rant: It took me 26 years to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up.

Anyone know of any good accounting jobs in DC? I am on track to become a CPA but would love to work for the federal government.

  • @Jon H – first, welcome to the neighborhood!

Second, I have long sung the praises of the Home Depot Christmas tree as cheaper and preferred to the local pricier models.

But, on Friday night, I was leaving Tunnicliff’s and the guys at Eastern Market were still up watching TV (the tree guys sleep there to keep an eye on the trees). I got an EXCELLENT deal on a 9 foot tree (it ended up being $60 after much haggling) and the quality is unbelievably better than Home Depot.

Frager’s has the same trees that Eastern Market does, but I think Eastern Market is way more willing to haggle than Frager’s.

Frager’s in general is more expensive than Home Depot, but totally worth it. Not just for purposes of shopping local or whatever, but they’re way more knowledgeable and helpful than your average Home Depot employee.

  • Rant: so a while back this guy I was seeing (beginnings of dating) suddenly disappears in the Spring(no emails, calls, etc.). Then he reappeared in late summer, explained why he disappeared, etc. I thought oh great we can be friends, and then poof disappears. Appears again in Oct w/ “let’s get together”. Sure I say when?…he set dinner date, he cancels, he sets another dinner date, he cancels. Saturday w/ friends checking what is out there on Match…he is out there on Match. His profile is full of lies! And its not the bitterness speaking, it really is full of lies.

Rave: Had a great weekend w/ friends.

  • Indc- why don’t you put his name on here so others don’t fall for this looser and then forget about him

  • @ lndc: You should post his match handle so the rest of us can avoid him!

  • I really don’t have another comment. I just liked that my Captcha words are “clothing arches”.

  • Emmaleigh504

@Rusty word. No Christmas hassles for me either! However I do like Christmas lights. My neighbors have them up on their back porch year round and I love them.

  • Rant: People with young children who jaywalk. Stop doing that! They are CHILDREN!

  • Kolorini – Sorry for your rotten now – grieve, drink, run, eat leafy greens and cookies (not together) be with your friends, write some maudlin poetry, drink some more, move on. My last scoundrel led to a great dog and a job in the South Pacific and a very happy now!!

And Podunk Philip – it took you 26 years to figure out you wanted to be a CPA?

  • Rant: I go out to empty my trash and my trash can is filled with construction debris which DC won’t haul away. It’s so heavy that I can barely roll the can. I’m livid. My “neighbors” have already cost me fines from DC whose sanitation workers are under orders to report anything that will bring the city some money. Both times the crap that was dumped was not mine but I had to waste a day going to court anyway to pay the fine and pay someone to haul all this shit to the dump and get a new can because the weight of the debris broke the old one.

    Rave: I put

  • Sorry, the phone rang…

Rave: The aforementioned can has been moved. I won’t say where. Hahahahaha
