PoPtrekker Vol. 6 – Georgia Ave. Part II (North of the Metro)

In a previous PoPtrekker we looked at Georgia Ave. south of the metro. I received many emails requesting north Georgia Ave. be featured. So here we are. A couple of things, this one runs a bit longer than past ones but we still had to cut out some notable spots. It’s just impossible to get everything. Also, I think I say “umm, ahh” about 127 times. As is certainly no surprise, PoPtrekker is filmed without a script and pretty much all on one take. So I use the “umms, and ahhs” to think about what I’m gonna say. But I’ll definitely work on that for future volumes.

You can see previous PoPtrekker episodes here. This remains a joint Prince of Petworth/ Intangible Arts production. If you have a suggestion for a future PoPtrekker please email me directly.

Full disclosure: Qualia Coffee owns Fresh Off The Roast Coffee which is an advertiser on PoP.

Thanks for the mention of the bike coop in this episode of PopTrekker.

The Bike House is still going strong with a weekly bike clinic! We are migrating over to the patio behind Qualia Coffee shop. We’ll be there for the time being every Saturday from 12-3 PM.

Please stop by to work on your bike, receive some advice from a mechanic, or to help us develop this exciting bicycle cooperative.

Watch our website to stay updated: http://sites.google.com/site/thebikehouse/

    thanks!

I love how you’re wearing a Drive By Truckers shirt, and all the while, we hear trucks driving by.

And the realty sign in front of the house for sale at 4519 Georgia Ave. says “Ask for Uzi.” Maybe the house hasn’t sold because you’d need an Uzi if you lived there (and apparently, the real estate agent will throw one in if you buy it!)

But seriously, keep up the good work!

  • Megan

PoP and IntangibleArts thanks for doing “my” neighborhood! Great job! (Although I question your judgment in featuring Macombo, but whatever.)

  • Nita

What, no coverage of that culinary delight Wendy’s? :-D (Sadly, I fear that one is never going away)

  • J-Flo

The property for sale by Uzi is not that house, it’s the plot of land next door. Current asking price is 250k.

hmm, I have to add regarding the Hispanic church at the corner of Taylor & Georgia where President Bush came to meet with Hispanic church leaders. That’s right BUSH came to Petworth and Obama has not!!

Most of the development you mention I already new about, but somehow makes it exciting to see it all listed one after another. I cannot wait until the new Yes opens! And I’m very happy to see the Petworth library renovations underway.

Great post!! Always glad to see a focus on the positives. Now if that damn Yes! would just open! ARGH!!

There’s some more good stuff down Kennedy – a bit further down, on the opposite side of the street from TDF at 7th& Kennedy, there’s a great tienda. They always have fresh avocados, limes, onions, cilantro, tomatoes and chorizo, plus those stacks of fried tortillas that are way better than Tostitos (and some other items too). It’s pretty much my dream come true to have avocados a block away at all times. Also, somewhere on the 800 block, I think, there’s a new US Postal Service store.

I’d like to know more about the “bartending school” set up next to where the upholsterer used to be. And I have *always* wondered about the New Washington Sun, a sign Intangible Arts lingered on for a moment. Anyone know anything?

One more thing. Am I the only one who’s totally disappointed the Macombo Lounge got a fresh coat of paint? (It used to be the same bright yellow as the signs)

Thanks for venturing North, POP and IA!

  • CHLibrarian

Yay Petworth Book Club! Thanks for the shout out, PoP!

  • IntangibleArts

Emma D.: Thanks for the tip on that tienda… That whole neighborhood is a bit north of me, so I haven’t wandered up there much (a selfish reason to participate in this series) — but I’m also on the lookout for a legitimate mexican-style green-corn tamale, as close as possible to the ones I used to buy on the street in Tucson — it’s such a simple meal but if the masa and chilies are right, it’s a delicious thing.

  • emma d.

IntangibleArts: Happy to share! It’s my neck of the woods, and has lots more to recommend it than one might think. I don’t think they have any prepared foods, so probably no tamales, sadly. They do have some stuff refrigerated with the cojita cheese, but I don’t recall what.

  • Cornaldo

The neighborhood isn’t so bad that you’d need an Uzi. I’m not sure why they’d try to sell a plot of land while offering to throw in a free machine gun.

If you’re going to do a lenthgy video about various things, why not do some research about what you’re going to talk about intead of guessing whether a building is going to be condos or rentals or whatever? Etc

  • Skeletor

PoP – Thanks for coming up to where the civilized folk live. I think the Wok used to be Wings n’ Things. (Those things being ribs, fried fish, and donuts.) It was a frontal assault on your arteries and totally awesome. I tear up a little when I pass by it now.

If you go down Varnum a little further, there is an awesome Sicilian cobbler on the south side of the street. It is the coolest shop in all of Christendom.

  • PoP, you missed an African American Heritage Trail sign – across the street from Moroni and Fusion is the Jones Heywood School of Dance and it has a sign.

You also missed my favorite Kenyan place, Safari.

But really, nice job guys! I always enjoy seeing people happy about our city and our neighborhood.

  • Prince Of Petworth

@saf I didn’t miss them but couldn’t fit everything in!

  • I figured you had time limits.

    Seriously, nice job!
