Judging Buildings

I totally forgot about this wild building. It’s located off New Jersey Ave, NW near Georgetown University Law Center. I feel like this is the National Association of Realtors building? Something like that, right? Anyway, it’s a really unusual looking building but I give it a thumbs up. I also like the view with the Capitol Building in the background to the left. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

  • Yes, it is the Realtors building at E and NJ NW

  • Thumbs up! I used to work over near this building. It’s lovely. And it’s got a good pub and I think a Starbucks on the first floor.

  • Designed by Gund Partnership. More details about the design and the sustainable features on their website: http://www.gundpartnership.com

  • In fact, it’s so purty they used it in an establishing shot of the Capitol in that movie… with Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon… about torture? (This comment is funnier if I don’t IMDb it, sorry.)

  • They also filmed scenes for Transformers in front of this building. Sadly they did not go through to final production.

  • Whoa! That’s a cool juxtaposition.

  • NAR moved into its new, state-of-the-art, environmentally conscious Washington, D.C., headquarters in October 2004.

The special glass keeps the inside warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Another fact…lights go on or off automatically depending on the amount of sunlight.

  • Right Salvant…built during the real estate bubble run up.

  • A couple of months ago I was walking past this building on my way to work when a husband and wife with two young boys crossed the street nearby. As they passed the building, the older of the two boys asked the father what this building was. The father said, “That’s the Realtors building. They’re the #@%-holes that got us into this mess.”

  • I’ve spent a lot of time inside that building. Awesome views, especially at night.

  • Thumbs up. I seem to remember a fairly laudatory article in either the Post or the NYTimes when it was finished. They made the most of an oddly-shaped parcel to create a very visually striking building.

  • That “good pub” on the first floor is a D.C. branch of the infamous Chicago Billy Goat Tavern…cheesburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger…

  • It looks like about to sail across the ocean.

  • Predictably, I’ll be mumbling over a pint at the Billy Goat at a lonely table in the back, representing the anti-architetctural-modernism curmudgeons. Membership is free if you curse a lot & have bad posture. Extra points for having divorced parents and an unmedicated bipolar disorder.

  • Yea, it’s cool. DC could use buildings with something other than concrete fascades. I like the fact that it reflects the buildings around it rather than try to compete with them and that it occupies one of those V-shaped intersections. Of course, it’s going to look mighty silly when the commercial real estate market crashes….in September. bum pum pum……

  • …exactly…. it would be a lovely thing to see a FORECLOSURE SALE sign by the lobby doors…
