Dear PoP – What’s Going on At the old School at Sherman and Kenyon

“Dear PoP,

They’ve been renovating that old school building at Sherman and Kenyon for a while now. Any idea what they’re turning it into?”

This is going to be the new home of the Cesar Chavez Public Charter School. We looked at it back in January. At the time the Principal, Andrew Touchette, wrote:

“it is still our plan to occupy the building in early August. Our students (about 230 in grades 6, 7 and 8) begin school on Monday, August 24.”

When I walked by this past weekend, the scaffolding was new to me and I saw workers inside. Think they’ll be done by Aug. 24th?

  • I live on that block and and have been looking forward to that building being turned around for years. Touchette said last year that it would be ready by August 2008, and now says 2009. I can say that they have been doing intense renovations for months now, and haven’t slowed down, so they seem committed to it now. I don’t think it had been occupied for decades, so it’s probably a huge project, but I hope they pull it off. Also hope they take the time to restore the exterior in a non-half-assed way, as well as the grounds. That space has the potential to really add something to the neighborhood.

  • I’ve been watching this one as I live very close to the construction (hear it every morning). No way they finish by August. Looks like the exterior space is going to be a parking lot.

  • Folks give it time. I don’t think they are doing the whole building. They’re having one grade at a time and building attendance year by year. They may not need the entire building at one time, leaving room for continued work while offering classes. But hey, I have no clue.

  • Scaffolding has zilch to do with whether or not the building will be occupiable in August. Half the buildings downtown have scaffolding around them.

  • My next door neighbor worked in the boiler room of that school for decades. He said it’s a great building. I look forward to visiting. Hope they have a community open house night.

By the way, has anyone noticed the rude people leaving Rosario school after night classes? Monday nights are awful. The school ought to offer driving lessons instead of ESL.

  • Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools (Chavez Prep Campus) will moved to the Bruce building early August ( whole building will be finished). Date for the community open house have been set, LOOK FOR OUR FLYER! Still enrolling 6th, 7th and 8th graders!
