You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

  • POP- any update on Radius Pizza?

  • Prince Of Petworth

    Yup, it’s open!

  • Rant: I have to go to really expensive substance abuse treatment for smoking WEED! I rarely drink. Don’t even take as much as an aspirin. Work out 3X a week. Extremely healthy diet. Own 5-6 properties. Make 100k+. Good credit. Money in the bank. Steady employment for the last 10+ years. Not even one incident of violence in my history. Something is terribly wrong with this picture.

Revel: The treatment is paid for by the taxpayers. 🙂 Taxpayers around the country should be ready to revolt. As soon as I am done, I am going to light up. There goes the taxpayers money up in smoke. Everyday is good, some days are just better than others.

  • Sweet. im feelin pizza tonight.

  • I find the lack of an Arby’s inexcusable.

  • nate,
what happened? cops caught ya on 420?

  • Nate- Didn’t you get arrested for having an unlicenced fire arm, or something to that effect? I know that’s not “violent” per say, but personally I’d prefer that folks with guns not be high.

Sometimes I wish the police/parole officers/whatever saw what you posted here. You’re right, they shouldn’t send you to substance abuse treatment; they should send you to jail. Your absolute disrespect for the law is precisely what’s wrong with so many here in DC. You might not agree with the laws, but by living here you chose to accept them. You’re fortunate to be afforded this opportunity, many just get sent to jail and instead your on here flaunting your absolute disregard.

Taxpayers should revolt, but not against the government, against people like you.

  • Why does every neighborhood have to be a mount, hill or heights?

  • Not sure if this is a rant or a rave, need time to judge: Went to Vegas for a long weekend with friends to visit a mutual best friend who transplanted a few years ago. The traveling bit sucked, as I was held over in the Newark Airport for four-plus hours. I feel pretty awful today, as I expect I will until I can finally sleep again later this week.

Not a gambler before, not one now. I would rather piss my money away on booze, which I did. Didn’t know this before, but you can drink in public there. I think this was my favorite aspect of vegas.

Saw Zumanity (Cirque du Soleil in the nude) from the second row. It was racy and intriguing, but Im still not sure what I thought of it as a whole. I think I liked the traditional Cirque better. Not as many insane acrobatics in this one (though they did some insane stunts like always). Like every other warm blooded person I had always wondered what the contortionists would look like performing in the buff. I guess it wasn’t bad, just not as good as my imagination made it out to be before. Sort of wish I still didn’t know. Reminds me a little of that Seinfeld episode where he dates a nudists and learns some things aren’t attractive without clothes – like opening a pickle jar.

I ran into Bobby Flay on my way to brunch. He is the equivalent of a rock star in my household. I didn’t ask for an autograph, but I did smell like chipotle barbecue sauce for the rest of the day.

I go back in three weeks for a work conference. I don’t know what I think of that either.

  • Nate:
I would like to know more about your keys to success. Post treatment, I would love to catch up for some mentor-mentee action. Does your early morning walk through the hood on the wknds still occur? If so, would love to join and be graced with your wisdom.

  • @minor drug offender: Mexico decriminalized this is one of the reasons, i assume
    US needs to follow suit.

Its not about money in the bank, its what the shortys thank(think)

  • gotta disagree with you lunchtime. I dont smoke pot but its an absolute joke that its against the law. and that is a failure of the government. not the failure of the millions and millions of law abiding pot smokers in the world. not speaking to nates case specifically as I dont know the details.

  • Lunch Time,
Not to get too deep into my case. But I was headed out to handle some business and a gun was in my bag. I actually put the bag in the x ray machine. I didn’t know it was there. Nor did I put it there. The same thing happened to an aide to Jim Webb as he was headed into the Capitol bldg. I hired the same lawyer.

Oh and by the way, I was not high at the time. Or the day before. Or the day before that. Marijuana stays in your system so long that testing for trace elements of it have little bearing on the incident.

As a responsible person, I don’t advocate people drinking or getting high handling guns either. Or driving. Or handling machinery.
See we agree on a lot more than you think. 🙂

  • Hey PoP, keep feeding us crime news on the blog (and not by request only). I don’t know where else to get local crime coverage. I know it can be grim, but I’d rather be aware than not. Keep up the good work!

  • Revel: I had the opportunity to escape to NYC for the weekend! Got away from the life here that is slowly but surely drowning me, saw Mary Poppins on Broadway, played the part of tourist and loved it.

Rant: Its Monday, I’m back at work, and life is still the way I left it. And in some cruel twist of irony, my hotel was on a street that shares the last name of my boss.

  • How the hell do you not know you are carrying a gun?

and @P: some neighborhoods are circles.

  • I signed a lease!! Staying in Columbia Heights is wonderful.

  • Rave: I had a great weekend in Richmond with some good friends and I’m looking forward to my roadtrip.

Rant: 4 hours of traffic on I-95 to and from RVA, ugh!

  • I have to wonder as not telling did – how do NOT know you are carying a gun? Sometimes – I just have a hard time believing some of what Nate says – sorry Nate

  • RANT: our shoddy military mental health situation that has led to the murder of 5 us troops by another one of their comrades at a military mental health facility in Iraq this morning/afternoon.

Rave: I start grad school aug. 31 to get the skills to help fix this problem.

Would I be your mentee or mentor? 🙂 I run every Saturday morning. Feel free to come along. Some evenings too. Straight up 14th from downtown to the WSC, lift some weights, then run on home to 4th & Emerson.

Dude, this substance abuse treatment is a bunch of shit. And that is likely the first time I have ever cursed on this board. I have health insurance. If I really needed treatment, they could force me to use my own health insurance instead of billing it to the taxpayers. But this isn’t as much about solving someone’s addiction as it is about churning the wheels for every one to get in on the federally subsidized gravy train.

I rarely drink. Yet, I don’t sit up here on a pedestal telling people not to drink. I no more need treatment for weed as some of the people on this board need treatment for alcohol. And by the posts on this blog, a lot of people could stand for some AA/Nicotine Anonymous classes.

I’ve been going to NA meetings at the Dupont Circle Club as a sanction for having smoked marijuana. There are some people in those meetings that could benefit from a taxpayer financed intervention treatment program. People on meth. Heroin. Crack. Yet, they are left twisting in the wind until they get arrested and fail a couple of drug tests before they are even offered treatment.

On a side note: I am amazed at how many seemingly normal white people have some serious addictions at these meetings. Foolishly, I always thought crack was strictly a black community drug.

  • Mike,
Really big gym bag, really light compact gun. A woman’s gun. Personally, I carry a more menacing looking gun. I’ve never had to pull my gun. But if I did, you’d shit your pants before I shot you.

  • And as I said, Jim Webb’s aide had one in a briefcase and charges were dropped. Now that seems less plausible to me than one in a big gym bag. That is for a jury to decide. It happens more than you think though. Another aide on the Hill was charged with the same thing. I know firsthand as I hired the lawyer they used. I understand where you are coming from. I would have your same point of view if the role was reversed.

The aide, identified by Mr. Webb’s office as Phillip Thompson, 45, had a semiautomatic, 9 millimeter pistol and two magazines that were discovered after he put his bag through an X-ray machine at an entrance to the Russell Senate Office Building, said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for the United States Capitol Police. Mr. Thompson faces felony charges of carrying a pistol without a license and possessing an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

  • Anyone know what was up with the cop activity around the 1700 block of Columbia in the recent days? They were lined up in the middle of the road flagging down what looked like random drivers. Then a cop also stopped us when we were walking back and started a very awkward conversation about caliyogurt and if we have seen any crime? Whats up?

  • why does monkeyrotica have such a woodrow for Arby’s?

  • Rant: should my use of a public sidewalk constitute agreement on my part to be accosted every 20 feet for spare change, a cigarette, help for the environment or just random craziness? Less than two blocks to the sandwich shop and back. Low bloodsugar. Five separate people approached me for something I wasn’t going to give them (two from the same organization). Grrr.

  • Rant: Having to resort to harassing my landlord to even get a time to schedule picking up my keys for my new apartment with the lease starting on the 15th. They have been completely unresponsive and don’t seem to get that I’m moving in 4 days, and have paid move in fees, move out fees, movers, and utility companies, not to mention even getting emergency no parking signs from the police department, expecting that I will have the keys of my apartment in order to do so.

I’m not even asking for the keys early, I’m just asking to schedule a freaking time to get them on the 15th. Is it really that hard? I’m even willing to get the keys copied myself, I’m at my wits end.

  • maybe someone should post Nate’s info on the MPD listserv pointing them to this site where he says he still carries a gun.

  • Rant – the DC police really suck at dealing with crime – half the block has been reporting thug-a-polooza, 2 of them live on the block – and all they do is drive by and do nothing. Gonna start reporting car #’s for police that ignore activity.

Rave – only 2 weeks left at my lame job 🙂

  • Rave: Spent a nice weekend in NY with my fam for mothers day + my moms birthday. Spent my lunch planting a garden!

Rant: I have a mouse, I’ve had it for nearly 2 months. It is the smartest mouse I have ever dealt with, and i’ve had my fair share of training living in AM (+20 dead mice to my name). I can’t seem to catch this one an am out of ideas.

  • Naomi,

I had the same problem. Instead of catching the sucker, I got these… http://www.alwaysbrilliant.com/aa/aspx-products/1-689/2-51698/SC-Froogle/kw-53826/bb/Ultrasonic-Mouse-Controls.htm

I can hear a slight buzzing, but my dog isn’t bothered by it.

Haven’t seen any “evidence” for the past month!

  • Rave: will you ride this with me down Georgia ave, PoP?

  • Naomi – you need a rat zapper! http://www.ratzapper.com/zapper-ultra.cfm

Nate – don’t dis my girly gun!

And a general question to PoPers – is anyone else getting a security warning every time they enter this site as well as each time you click on a topic? I keep getting a box IE Security Warning with a request to install Adobe Flash player. My friend said you shouldn’t even click on the close box or or the “don’t Install” box, but do a ctrl, alt, delete and then remove it somehow, but I can’t make that work. I did a full system Spybot scan and came up clean. I don’t get it on any other websites. Anyone else having trouble?

Unfortunately, you are not guilty for things you say. But for things you do. Your post serves notice that my wording was correct though. I do not carry a gun. I own one. But if you want to pass that along to them, be my guest. They can’t even catch known criminals.

Two weeks ago, my roommate was robbed at gunpoint on my back porch. All they kept asking him was if the gun was metal or plastic. Now you want to burden them with arresting someone that poses no threat to you or anyone else? That makes very little sense. But then again, if you are worried about nonviolent people owning guns, then that only highlights the problem we have in this city. Plenty of people shoot guns for sport. Gun ranges. Hunting. Collector’s items.

Somewhere in your mind, you must be able to separate people that walk around with AK 47’s and the people that own hunting rifles or guns used for their own protection. Or maybe you are one of those that would rather wipe your ass with the 2nd amendment. Every gun I have ever owned has been purchased LEGALLY. Not from some straw purchaser. Or off the street hot. Guns are not going away. You would be better served calling the police on the baby factories that are producing young black men that will blow your head off over your ipod or your iphone.

  • Hi Pop, Can I offer a suggestion for when you visit local restaurants? Would you be so kind as to ask about wheat-free items, if you think of it? After doing a little research on Pete’s Pizza in Columbia Heights, I found out they have wheat-free pizza and beer! Fabulous!

  • @Bonifa: Everyblock should have some info you might not have about your neighborhood.

  • Anyone hear gunshots between 3 and 4am this morning, 3700 block of 9th St. NW? Just questioning the reality of a might-have-been-dreaming-but-probably-not experience.

  • Thanks for the sites Victoriam & M! I purchased one of each, hopefully in a few weeks you’ll see a dead mouse or lack of mouse rave from me.

  • My mice are all named Darwin. They are able to take the peanut butter off the mousetrap without making the trap snap. I ended up putting four in a block and although the Darwins were usually able to clean the peanut butter off two of the traps, it was the third (or fourth) that was their downfall. No more mousehouse.

  • @Naomi- Or get a Westie terrier… the mouse will be dead within the hour. Granted, you’ll have to clean the little white beard that’ll be covered in blood, and you’ll have to clean up the “remains”.

  • This is a rant – I was walking home on Sunday evening (7.30pm) – it was still light out, and I saw 2 boys pushing a motorbike – heading east along Euclid between 14th and 15th…they had come out of University place, and it was apparent that they were stealing the bike. Called cops. Saw that the people behind me were also calling the cops. had to rush home bc of small baby. I’m hoping those kids were caught and feel like I should have said/done something, but unfortunately, I’m a small woman and kids in this neighborhood scare me and I don’t know who is packing heat. Isn’t that pathetic? To whoever probably had their bike stolen, sorry, I hope those 2 boys were apprehended (they can’t have been over 16 years old – and so brazen…it was still light out and people were out and about) and I hope you got your bike back. I feel like a loser for suppressing my naturally confrontational nature due to fear of random acts of violence. And constantly worry about being shot. Same thing happens when I see the people driving up on Fairmont to buy drugs (yes you, Korean dude in the Honda Accord, I see you ALL THE Time you hopped-up freak!). I just look away and keep walking.
