Judging Restaurants/Cafes – Crumbs & Coffee

Crumbs & Coffee is located at 1737 Columbia Road, NW in Adams Morgan. I’m always on the lookout for good breakfast spots so I figured I’d see if there are any fans out there. I think the most important question is – do they have good egg sandwiches? And how are the bagels?

  • Everything is perfectly service-able and decent, but nothing special. Lots of room inside, decent wifi access.

I seem to recall that they do have egg sandwiches, though I can’t recall if they’re good. You’re almost certainly better off going to Hellers if you’re going for the food.

  • I’ve never been there, the location is a little odd and just doesn’t seem to invite me in. You know who has amazing egg sandwiches? So’s Your Mom.

On toast, on bagel, on muffin.. with meat, without.. anyway you want So’s Your Mom is the best.

It’s up the block next to the bank of america ATM’s (past Cashion’s Eat Place) on Columbia. They are the most fantastic and reasonably priced delicious breakfast carryout in the city. GO NOW. Seriously. It’s good. We live in Petworth and will go all the way to So’s for a breakfast treat. But be warned, their delicious Pain au Chocolate and Chocolate Chip muffins will definitely be gone if you wait til 10 am on a Saturday morning… it’s very popular.

  • C&C has some nice toasty bagels in the morning. They’re very fresh, a little softer than the real thing, but the kids prefer their bagels.

  • They demand a $5 minimum to use a credit card (which legally they aren’t allowed to do).

  • I live close by so I have stumbled in a couple times for coffee but its not the most inviting place. As noted So’s does do good egg sandwhiches cause they do not skimp on the egg and cheese. Also Hellers though they could up there game. The decent businesses in Mount Pleasant have absolutly no reason to over exert themselves at this time though. There is no comptition to speak of. Why cant we get a bar pilar or saint ex in MTP? I know the nimbys scare investers off but their only gripe seems to be live music or at least thats how they exhert their power. the guy that has the balls to open a good wine bar or high end tavern in MTP me thinks would be handsomely rewarded with much patronage.

  • Awful Bagels, not great coffee either. I’m always sad that its not better because I live right down the street. So’s your mom and Tryst are much better.

  • I’m pretty sure as a merchant I can accept or not accept credit cards or set whatever restrictions I like. The U.S. dollar is legal tender for all debts public and private, not Visa, not American Express.

That said, I’ve been to C&C a couple times. It has zero atmosphere. Cappuccino wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. I’ll pay a dollar more for ambiance at Tryst.

  • it’s not a law that compels merchants to accept credit cards for all amounts. it’s the contract the merchant has with the credit card issuer – part of their agreement is that they are not allowed to set a minimum charge amount.

  • Heller’s has just about the worst customer service I have ever experienced – I’ll never go there again.

  • you mean you’d pay a dollar more for non-existant and/or crappy service at Tryst.

  • But Tryst has free WIFI!

    The WIFI is also cursed.

  • The last time I was at C&C (a few years ago) I was sitting outside with two males friends. One of them got harassed by two different drunk guys within a few minutes of each other. Pretty amusing. Other than that, their chai is pretty decent.

  • I love C&C! Very pleasant and chill place. But nothing special at all, very basic, so not worth travelling to if you don’t live in the neighborhood.

  • Right, right…not the law-law, but the law of the credit card companies….

  • Credit card minimums are not legall enforceable. Those businesses that try to enforce credit card minimums are just pissing customers off. Why lose business that way?

  • Credit card minimums are not legally enforceable. Period. They just piss customers off! I have never understood why businesses want to lose customers for such a trivial reason.

  • they charge a fee, because the CC company charges the business fees, why not pass those fees onto the customer, or avoid a CC charge not worth your fee.

  • Best bagels in DC are at the deli/cafe in the Old Post Office.

  • Eat your cage-free egg sandwich in a CAGE! Not welcoming from the outside…

  • From Visa’s website:

Can merchants set a minimum purchase or charge a fee for using my Visa card?
Visa has certain regulations that all merchants that accept Visa cards must follow. One of those rules is that Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items.

If you run into a problem like this with a merchant, please notify your Visa card-issuing bank. Visa member banks have access to the appropriate Visa rules and regulations as well as to the Notification of Customer Complaint forms which should be used by the bank to document and file merchant complaints.

    From the Mastercard website:

Another MasterCard acceptance rule prohibits merchants that accept MasterCard cards from establishing any minimum amount below which the merchant won’t accept payment via MasterCard card. If a merchant displays a decal with the MasterCard logo to indicate that MasterCard cards are accepted, that merchant can not condition a sale based upon the cardholder disclosing any other information or identification, except under very specific conditions, such as when merchant needs to deliver merchandise to the cardholder’s home or business.

  • C&C is home to the worst latte in DC… seriously, for the price of a Starbucks latte, I don’t want to see my latte coming out of a powder fed machine (as it was the last, and only, time I was there).

  • the place sucks

  • Terrible. Mediocre drinks, garbage excuse for bagels. So’s Your Mom a couple blocks away is worlds better.

  • Hellers has wonderful customer service. I go in there all the time and the owners and their staff always are very nice to me. I can’t imagine anyone except the one dude in dreads being rude. I just go in there way too many times to believe an anonymous poster. Ignore them.

  • Wow, I’m shocked to hear so many people trashing this place! I personally love it. Used to live near there and stopped in on a regular basis. Now I live farther away and still make special trips over there sometimes.

Bagels – I think their bagels are the best in NW. They’re fresh-baked and soft – not grocery store style like a lot of other coffee shops in the area. I go out of my way to buy C&C bagels for meetings and gatherings.

Ambiance – Yeah, it’s not a comfy couch kind of place, but there’s free wifi, you can sit outside, and I’ve gotten work done there many times before. The staff is remarkably friendly and they remember a lot of their regulars. I think it’s worth noting too that this is one of few coffee shops that doesn’t serve a majority white clientele – it’s latino run and serves a good cross-section of the neighborhood. That’s something I value.

Coffee – All I ever get is straight up coffee and bagels, and I’ve never disliked the coffee I get there. Can’t comment on that.

Credit cards – Really, who cares? If you’re spending less than $5 it’s pretty standard to pay in cash. Is that reason to avoid a good local business?
