Judging Restaurants – El Rinconcito Deportivo

DSCN5595

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to suggest a dumpy little restaurant that I enjoy as it seems that you have been previewing a fair amount of them lately. I really like El Reconcito Deportivo, a little Mexican/Salvadorian hole-in-the-wall on 11th Street right next to Bloombars. I live nearby and try to stop in there a few times a month. There are a few women who work there, and although I don’t know their names, there is a little bit older woman who works there midday and now that she knows me she treats me like gold, even letting me sample different items on the menu and even sneaking me little samples of other patron’s meals! I assume the food is akin to having somebody whipping up something in a Hispanic household…I would much rather have their tacos and burritos than hitting up one of the chain joints and the other things I have had (steak and eggs, breaded chicken, seafood soup) were also tasty. When talking with the owner, I was a little surprised when she told me when the restaurant had been opened for 11 years and…they live on 11th street just a block south of the restaurant so they are definitely a local business!”

I had written a small post back in Aug. 2007 but I’m curious to know if there are other fans out there? I really enjoy the atmosphere. They are definitely part of what makes that stretch of 11th Street great. So who digs the food? Any items you particularly recommend?

Thumbs up, definitely. Love the taquitos.

  • Beth

    Good review.
But I believe it’s El Rinconcito Deportivo (not Reconcito).

  • Binklesworth

If I ever go off the vegan wagon, I’m heading here first for some chicharron.

  • This is absolutely my favorite Latin restaurant in the city! My roommate from San Diego opened my eyes to this joint. The tacos and burritos are perfect and authentic (and really inexpensive!), and the rest of their food is a-maz-ing. Seriously, this place is the s&*t!

  • Neener

can anyone explain the deep meaning of the word rinconcito?

I remember from Spanish class something like Rincon translates to corner, but in reality it’s used like “cozy old neighborhood corner like we grew up near”

  • Anonymous

Are they related to the El Rinconcito on Park Rd? I prefer the one on Park.

  • DCDireWolf

FYI, Burritos are not latin or hispanic food. They were invented in the U.S. and don’t originate from any latin country. So, really, they aren’t authentic in any real sense of the word. That said, I’m not commenting on the quality of Rinconcito’s food, I’ve never had it. But I have been in there to have a beer or two and watch a soccer game, and I’ve enjoyed it. Good, friendly service.

  • Anonymous

I am pretty sure they are related to Rinconcito II. I have always heard the II is better, and I eat there often, but after all the rave reviews here I may try this one as well.

The owner is Bolivian and a group of us has been hoping she’s one day have a Bolivian food special but apparently they made Bolivian before and it didn’t sell so well. Wonder if anyone reading the blog would be supportive (ie show up) if she advertised a Bolivian food night…..sopa de mani = deliciosa!!

  • DCSands

I went here once and really enjoyed it – the food was cooked well (had taquitos) and the girl I was with loved the opportunity to exercise her Spanish skills… Also made a strong margarita.

  • Anonymous

i’ve never been to the one on 11th St, but El Rinconcito on Park is awesome! i highly recommend the cheese enchiladas. they also have excellent refried beans and rice. its my favorite comfort food in the city. they also serve up an amazing margarita. i’ve never tried their soup before, but always think i should–i see them serve it heaping with seafood and it looks delicious!

  • Binklesworth

Neener: I think the word has many uses related to the word “corner”, in this case (you likely knew this) it’s “Little Sports Corner”. I’ve seen it in a lot of business names, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this business is not related to others.

I’m at work, so I really should get back to applying for that job at that other company.

  • Chewy

The one on Park and this one on 11th are complete different from each other. The one on Park is a little “fancier” and has more options; I don’t care for the standard tacos/burritos their much but some of the other things are really good (big fan of the pork chicharrones (sp?)). However, I had to skip out on this place the last time I was there as there was a pretty nasty stench coming from the general seating area; hopefully that problem has been resolved!

@ Neener…I believe you are correct. This name probably means the happy little sports corner or something like that.

  • El Puma

Amigos, Rinconcito in this case is more of a place instead of corner, es mas, yo lo traduciria mas bien como lo que ustedes llaman “Sports bar”.

    Opinen.

Name aside, this tiny hole-in-the-wall is magical. I am far from adventurous–I stick to their burritos and papusas–but they’re always in heaping portions and are very delicious. The green chile salsa that comes with the burritos? YUM. Oh, and the coleslaw/salsa that comes with the papusas are laced with crack, they’re so good.

The wait staff are always wonderful and nice. If I want a burrito, this is the first place I’ll go.

Oh, and does anyone else chuckle to themselves about their bar? They have one of every type of bar glass, but usually just one.

  • Toby

El puma, sports bar will fly. Rinconcito is literally a little corner and deportivo from deportes or sports. I assume they have tvs on with soccer games, espn en español. Yo no soy tan deportiva but I love me some comida latina. And remember y’all, pupusas are Salvadoran though I heard Hondurans make them too.

  • El Puma

Yeap, asi es. Pupusas are like my beloved Arepas.

En este Rinconcito Deportivo la cerveza es barata, tres pesos por una Modelo Especial, esa es la que mas se parece a la Polar.

I keep meaning to try this place

About three years ago on the Columbia Heights Yahoo group there were some pretty nasty exchanges about this restaurant. Apparently there was some issue about how trash was being disposed of. I guess the issue has been resolved since I haven’t seen any recent discussion about it.

  • Toby

Pumito, si comes arepas, tienes que ser colombiano. And you should put in the accents in Spanish with alt 160, 161, 162, 163, 164. And alt 130 for é. I can’t help it. Soy profesora. And I will try arepas.

  • neener

    Arepas?

Does anyone remember the place in Cleveland Park with the $4.95 Arepa platter? That place RULED. I’ve never had such bargain arepas since then. Blistering crispy white cornmeal and black bean centers.

These two Venezuelan college students tried opening a place on 14th but it didn’t last.

Can you even get any arepas in DC in 2008?

  • El Puma

Neener, amigo, I am from Venezuela, I think I am the only Venezuelan in Mount Pleasant, lol. You can git a nice Arepa anyday at Nellie’s. I know the chef, he’s Venezuelan and the Arepas there “da bomb”, funk, I said da bomb…such a 90′s Miamian word….well, word…estoy borracho.

In fact, my husband got some Venezuelan ayacas for Christmas Eve and we had never had them. He prefers tamales salvadoreños and for me, those ayacas were, as you say, da bomb.

  • jae

puma–come se escriben los acentos en un laptop?

  • Anonymous

neener, Nellie’s sports bar at 9th & U has arepas. I don’t know how authentic they are, having never eaten them at other places, but they were GOOD and I’ve seen good reviews online.

  • RCR

@Anon 8:37 – you are correct, there were reports of a huge rat problem behind this place (and in?), and also complaints of drunks getting into fights outside of it (probably after soccer matches). Maybe they’ve cleaned up, but this place was not liked by neighbors 3 years ago.

El Rincocito Cafe II on Park is wonderful, however.

  • Anonymous

RCR- yes, there were issues about 3 years ago with rat problems in the back alley, and people dumping trash such as mattresses and sofa’s into El Rinconcito’s Dumpster. I’ve been a Rinconcito patron for over 5 years, and have had nothing but wonderful experiences each time. I thought it was a bit unfair for one business to be blamed for the rat problem in a public alley (don’t all alleys in DC have a rat problem?) shared with other businesses and homes, and for trash that was obviously illegally dumped behind their property (who hasn’t seen people place unwanted furniture and large items in the alleys, without regards to disposal regulations) Maria is a great neighbor, who lives right down the street from the restaurant and who is active in the community and has been in business for over 12 years in Columbia Heights. If you stop by, chances are you will see her helping her kids complete their homework, instead of the crowd of drunks people on the listservs claimed.

Thanks to Everyone.. for their support..

My Mom Mrs. Nunez runs “El” Rinconcito Deportivo.. We are a Family Restaurant. We’ve lived in the Community for the past 14 yrs. and as well as myself, my mother is a great support to the Community aswell as other programs. Even though our Rest. has faced several criticism that we’ve never actually agree too. We are still in business in our neighborhood serving our best hospitality to our clients at the Rest. If u know my mom personally she’s very cordial and Pleasant for she’s always treating our new client’s as well as regulars with great attention. Now with The Trash Dumping behind the Rest.. the person that’s to blame is a street guy known as Marvin who’s caused several problems for other neighbor’s. Is responsible for Dumping trash all over the Alleys on 11th. St.. the police is informed about it.. but they never seem to do nothing in re-guards to the issue.. To all thanks to the Support and you are welcome to visit our Restaurant .. Thanks on Behalf of my Mom and my Family..

I am a Loyal Fan of El Rinconcito.. Come on u guys .. It’s been rated as the best Pupusas in the District by the Washington Post.. I know Mrs. Nunez and her history as a hard working Mother and a great supporter to The Neighborhood. She is also good Friends with our Councilmember Graham. I always see how she collaborates with the Kenyon Block party every year.. shes a great influence in our Community.. her children are great her oldest attends School for Interior Design, and they’ve all grown up helping their mother in the Restaurant.. She’s faced several Robberies in her Restaurant.. but still Runs the place and welcomes all the Regulars as well as new customers. So lets all be a great support to this hard working Latina. Who is always a great help to our Community..
