Mural of the Week

Here’s another great mural that has recently gone up. It is located off 9th Street near Shiloh Church. I’m willing to take one for the team and expose my weak Long Island public school upbringing – who are the two gentlemen featured? I assume the guy on the right is “Paul Laurence Dunbar, the first African-American to gain national eminence as a poet”?

Closeups after the jump.

  • The other is Langston Hughes.

  • Not to be picky (but I probably am), I’ve always heard the church referred to as Shiloh Baptist and I’m neither Baptist, nor black, just a Washingtonian.

  • Actually, the gentleman on the right is Carter Woodson, an African American historian, jouranlist, and originator of Black History Month. The Dunbar sign refers to the Dunbar theater, a popular jazz venue and movie theater.
