Questionable Building Names

Hmm, the Richelieu. What do you think of when you hear the name Richelieu? The Three Musketeers? Wikipedia says, Cardinal Richelieu “sought to consolidate royal power and crush domestic factions.” Interesting choice for a building name…

  • what do I really think of when I hear that name? I think of Lt Sulu going nuts with a fencing sword on Star Trek.

  • Def The Three Musketeers!

  • In general, the Cardinal. In this context, I just think of the craze for all things French during the deco/ art nouveau era. Was this building built in the 1920s or 30s, by any chance? It seems like buildings of that period often have random-ish frenchified names slapped on ’em.

  • The literal meaning of Richelieu is “rich place.” Also, it’s a wing of the Louvre.
