Logan Circle A Great Spot For A Picnic

I also caught this guy painting the monument which was pretty cool. It’s a pretty tough spot to beat. Hard to imagine what it was like 20 years ago.

  • Right after moving to Logan Circle a year-plus ago, I had a funny convo with my dentist about Logan. He suggested that it must be hard for me to get drugs there these days, which we joked about being the toughest part of my transition to the neighborhood. Also, I saw this guy painting this past weekend as well. It totally made me want to buy an easel.

20 years ago, we were living at 15th and O. In those days, the realtors were calling that “Dupont East,” in an attempt to distance the property from Logan.

The circle was just as nice then, and they had their wonderful house tour every year. But that was when #1 and #2 Logan were boarded (I SO wanted to buy those houses). And after dark, it became a much different place.

  • 20 years ago the drunks outnumbered the picnickers any time, day or night. I seem to recall that at one point (even earlier) they had practically ruined the circle by running 13th Street through the circle as they do on Thomas Circle today, though that was eventually fixed. And, of course, there were a couple of pre-crack era drug markets up and running. I remember hitchhiking home from College Park in the early 80s and getting a lift from a couple who were driving down to Logan to score some heroin. It was his birthday; that was his present.
