Glassed In Fire Escape – Sweet!

DSCN2298, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I asked just a couple of weeks ago if these condos (you can also see here what it looked like before the glass was added) were ever going to go on sale? I guess they’re getting closer. I think the glassed in fire escape looks super cool. Do you like it?

  • It really adds to the curb appeal, not gonna lie. They still really really need to add some roof trim though…

  • could they please add more crap to that building to further piss off their neighbors?
maybe a neon sign or something like that . . .

  • Yeah, it looks cool, but I would have thought one of the appeals of a fire escape is the place to chill outdoors. Of course, that could just be me, who never had a balcony or any such thing.

  • I like it. It makes it look a bit more like a real condo rather than just a crappy-pop-on-a-house conversion. And its good that it contrasts with the surrounding houses rather than trying to kiss their asses all too much – architecturally speaking.

  • Seems to me that if you encase the fire escape in glass you have… stairs. Those could be handy.

  • It looks like those 1960’s garden apartments in Rosalyn. I kinda like it though, its the stucco _ wish they would have left off..

  • An attractive band-aid covering a puss-filled sore. Still, better than the sore alone.

  • it makes me wonder if they had to close in the stairs to pass some code — I wonder if there are stairs inside to access all the units? I think the glass walls are just a cheap way to get by without enlarging the building to properly put the stairs inside. My guess is this area will be freezing in the winter and baking in the summer. Plus it totally clashes with the style of the building. Big thumbs down.

  • Is it legal to enclose a fire escape? If you enclose it, is it still a “fire escape”? If so, what makes a fire escape different from a staircase?

  • I think it looks great, but I guess I’d kinda be concerned about safety. If the building is on fire, I’m pretty sure the last thing I’d want to do is run into an entire room made out of glass… =/
